Host looks bigger and stronger than last year. He made a couple of good runs against Hull. Looked a bit vulnerable when attacking players managed to run around him and make a few extra yards though.

Only a trial though and he will probably have a good year.

Exactly, I have no inside information and the club provided diddly squat thus my post.
The "coach" has said in his preview before there Hull game that Luc, Host & Simms had all put in really well and they would battle it out for the starting edge position.
So again not unreasonable on that basis, when I see the squad was reduced, to then ask what the f**k happened to the bloke the coach said just 5 minutes ago was in the running for the spot?
By the way other than Sims (who needs to be on the bench for balance) tell me who is better?
I thought that was what the trials are for to actually work it out.
Anyway hopefully the kid is picked Rd 1 and it was all smoke and mirrors.

Hey OT, Cast your mind back to same time last year . Apparently it was 3 guys all fighting for half back position. If i remember rightly Mann, Field & McCrone ,all would apparently get their chance. In the end, all bullshit, the position was never going to be any one else s except McCrone New year, same spin.

P.S.In saying that i do understand the point you are making

100% correct.
Every one is always fighting for the position but only one will ever get it and that was decided before the fight even started.
Mc Fookknuckle always trying to be the window dresser but we all know he is really the store dummy.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor and skipper Gareth Widdop were on hand at Glen Willow Stadium, Mudgee on Friday afternoon with their South Sydney counterparts and representatives from Westfund ahead of the 2018 Charity Shield.

Westfund – as naming rights partner of the Charity Shield for the next two seasons – have contributed to the spirit of the 35th edition of the annual pre-season game by donating a number of match passes to Barnardos, Mudgee.

Barnardos provides community support and child advocacy programs focussed on providing educational, health and social and emotional wellbeing for children and younger people.

Westfund partnered with Charity Shield organisers this year to bring the highly-anticipated match to Mudgee as an extension of their ongoing partnership with the Dragons.

The entire Dragons squad have visited 16 schools across nine Central West towns throughout the week, while on Friday, Dragons trio Zac Lomax, Matt Dufty and Tariq Sims visited patients at Mudgee Public Hospital.

Westfund New South Wales State Manager David Chapman was thrilled to continue their support of regional communities.

"We recognise that sport and teamwork are at the very heart of our regional communities. By supporting the Charity Shield, we believe we're helping bring Mudgee an event that would otherwise be out of reach for many regional fans," Chapman said.

"It has been inspiring to see the level of community outreach undertaken this week with thousands of regional school children and communities engaged by the program of events undertaken by the Dragons.

"Our ongoing partnership with the Dragons and our support of the Charity Shield are both developing opportunities for Westfund as we look to engage with our members and communities in key areas across the Central West of NSW."

Mary won't be around long enough to stuff up the careers of these young guns.

That backline looks weak.
Now I will say I haven't seen anything of them this year, but someone was saying Nene has packed on a few pounds, so will that make him slower and more lethargic than he was last year?

If Lomax isn't picked first at some stage this year then let's not pretend we in any way support our juniors.

If Corey Oats is going to the 2nd row then Nene should be going into our prop rotation because he is huge.
Obviously being primed for his runs from dummy half because he won't be fast enough if he gets a break on the wing.

Ahhh all good, it will take me back, all the way to last year when he used to take an age to turn and jog half heartedly after a kick and then walk it back and fall down at the first defenders feet, memories eh?

Dragons' and Rabbitohs' leaders gave their final words on Friday

A LOT ON THE LINE: Souths has held the Charity Shield since 2012 but bookies are listing St George Illawarra as favourites ahead of Saturday night's clash. Photo: Mark Rayner
Captains and coaches of each Charity Shield squad visited Glen Willow on Friday afternoon to front to the media for the last time before the big game.

As you’d expect, first year South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold was immediately swamped with queries about Greg Inglis’s status for match.

“Greg’s physically fit. He’s been training for the last few weeks without any restrictions,” Seibold said.

“But he won’t play until he comes to us and says he’s ready to play.

According to Inglis, he’s good to go for Saturday and doesn’t want to be thrown into South’s week one clash without any game time behind him.

“You would rather get 20-30 minutes out in a trial game than going straight into 80 minutes – especially after having a year off,” Inglis said.

“I’ve had a good couple of weeks at training now but the games are totally different.”

One Souths superstar that isn’t in doubt for Saturday is Sam Burgess who came to pre-season training late after a World Cup campaign with England.

“We normally come back from those camps in good shape,” Burgess said.

“You have to be smart and stay fit in your time off but everyone comes back ready and within a week you’re back up to speed.”

Although Burgess wasn’t keen to chat about a potential on-field battle with James Graham, he’s going to be mindful of his English counterpart.

“I won’t be looking out for him but maybe I should be because he could be looking out for me,” Burgess said.

“I don’t want to talk him up too much because I’m playing him tomorrow but he’s a great guy.

“He brings a lot of passion and effort and he sets a good example on training field so he’s certainly going to stiffen their forward pack up.”

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY: Paul McGregor was all business on Friday and is determined to kick-start a successful campaign during Saturday's 35th Charity Shield Event. Photo: Mark Rayner.

St George representatives had their say at Friday’s conference too and coach Paul McGregor was quick to shed some light on his substitution strategy for Saturday.

“Our main forwards will get two stints and the young guys will get on at the back end of the game,” McGregor said.

This plan will go through regardless of the in-game situation and McGregor isn’t planning on letting emotion get in the way of his pre-season structures.

“It’s a great game but at the end of the day it’s a trial match,” he said.

“We need to give minutes to our important people for round one.”

St George Illawarra is fresh off a 24-18 win over Hull FC which pleased McGregor. However, he’s under no illusions about the challenge coming on Saturday.

“We made seven line breaks and scored five tries to three but defensively we need to be better,” he said.

“Last week I thought that we played in good spirit but we didn’t bring that aggressive attitude that we need to play rugby league so we’ll bring it tomorrow night.”

McGregor was happy with what he saw from his spine against Hull and hopes the likes of Widdop and Hunt will build on their outing last week.

“As the game got on, him [Hunt] and Gareth came together really well,” he said.

“Benny’s the seven and he’s got to execute the game plan and Gareth’s very instinctive so they complement each other well.

“It’s just about getting that cohesion. The more they play together, the more they’re going to be comfortable.”

A NEW PARTNER: Gareth Widdop is looking forward to a season of stability as he's set to have former Brisbane maestro Ben Hunt alongside him all year. Photo: Mark Rayner.

Dragons’ skipper Gareth Widdop had plenty of good things to say about Ben Hunt as well, and relies on the experience he’ll bring to the team this season.

“We’ve had a fair bit of change in the halfback position over the last few years,” Widdop said.

“Just to have stability there will help. The longer you keep your spine together – it helps your team.

Widdop is one of three Englishman who will take the field on Saturday and entering his eighth season in the NRL, has taken some of the younger players such as Matt Dufty under his wing.

“As halves and fullbacks we all need to be on the same page,” he said.

“He’s a good kid and he’s pretty intelligent. I try to help him where I can.”

There’s been an unprecedented buzz throughout Mudgee all week as the Charity Shield fever is running wild, and could reach boiling point by Saturday at 7.30pm.

SEE YOU THERE!
