Sad about Sloans Nan - the kid has clearly had a far from privileged up bringing, might take a lil more TLC than the average middle class fella. Looks like the weight of the world is on his shoulders... coaches job to take that off and let the kid roll. He will clearly be a special player - oozes class and he has that one thing you can't train as they say

Sure looks like Big Arty Beetson to me! And there they are - Changa's famous (or infamous) white boots! I remember I bought a colour TV just in time to watch that game. I shouldn't have bothered.
It was an infamous chapter of our history. I was there that day not much to cheer about that day. Had to wait 36 yrs but got my revenge in 2010

Problem with that is our coach is an old school coach and I'm not so sure he is the man that can help him

Not sure that is anything more than a rumour as I haven’t seen any confirmation anywhere.

I was there too on the hill not far from the clock drinking “silver bullets” out of proper steel cans.

Needless to say the 2nd half consumption rate was accelerated due to trying to drown my sorrows.

We could have actually led at half time as we missed a golden opportunity to score just before the half time hooter.

A lot of urban myths about the white boots as Chang never ordered them nor wanted to wear them it was the sponsors idea.

The photo of Artie & Chang shows the great empathy and concern of the victorious captain for the fallen and badly beaten hero.

Not so sure that would happen with the arseholes of the modern era epitomised by that turd Cameron Smith.

Read on one of the pieces wrote after the game, Hook said he will be the no 1.

Nice approach from Hook and Slone got ticker for playing.

If I remember right , let me know if I'm wrong didn't we beat the Roosters in the semi by a point low score ( not sure the score ) ...... If my memory right I always thought that they had played us into the grand final ......

Loved the old silver bullets Reschs Pilsners. I was too young to drink at that time. I just cried into my can of Coke. Upon reflection and later in life now I appreciate how Beetson consoled his old Kangaroo team mate. I was lucky enough to meet some St George legends and have my photo taken with, Sticks Provan in Caloundra when he ran the Oasis Resort, and with 3 immortals, Changa, Reg Puff the magic dragon Gasnier and Chook Raper. Ah they were the glory days when Kogarah was always filled to the brim

We flogged them 32 - 8 in the 2010 GF it was a wonderful night but only after a nail biter beating Wests 13 - 12

Terrible game but I hope they learn from it, Better to get these performances out of the way now than during the season.

Seeing Sloan cry shows how much pressure the poor kid must have on his shoulders and a fear of possibly being dropped. I hope Hook persists with him which he stated he will after the game. He will come good.

Unfortunately we just don't have the players especially in the engine room to be top 8 competitive and our backline although big and strong lacks any real speed like you handle or a Mitch Brennan or a Michael Sorridimi

Hi Guys.

New to the forum. I’d thought I’d start with something different. I’ve written a little poem about the Charity Shield. I need some help with the title. I’m thinking “St.George Can’t Play” or “Cos it’s the same old sh*t just a different day”. Go easy, its all tongue in cheek.

I sat down to watch the Dragons play
In the Charity Shield just the other day
It was played in Mudgee, the town in west
Where those Rascally Rabbits sure put us to the test

It was going to be much better the faithful were told
Cos we’ve got some new coaches coming into the fold
There’ll be no more holes in defence for all to see
But no one told the Rabbits glory glory be

Our attack will be better much more fluid and slick
But all we get is five boring hit ups and then just a kick
What would Langlands Gasnier and Raper have to say
Cos it’s the same old sh*t just a different day

Then there’s the wife’s team the one with the spoon
She reckons it’s coming our way real bloody soon
Was Alfie right when he went on to say
After one of those Grand Finals “St.George can’t play”

Ironically, I thought that Sloan had a worse game yesterday than he did in the swamp last year against the Sharks after which Hook sent him to Coventry so to speak. He looked anxious and was probably trying too hard to impress. He just dug a bigger and bigger hole for himself.
Credit to Hook for now publicly declaring he will be our number one but it may be too late for the two of them as a coach/player team -Hook should have said that last year but wanted Cody. Like everyone I'm willing Sloan to succeed and just hope that he can regain his confidence.

Oops sorry yes we beat them 8 - 5 in the major semi then they beat Manly to make the GF nobody saw this score coming
Mmm not so sure i agree with you there jodragon. They ( Easts) had touched us up twice before in 1974 and 1975 second round games by 35 odd points both times. We could get them if it was close but once they got a roll they were like a juggernaut.

I'm biased but your right the Roosters were a force in those years, they had such wonderful players, Beetson, Brass, Coote, Fairfax, Peard and Schubert to name a few and they had the original master coach Jack Gibson. Tough to beat
