Weyman Returns For Charity Shield
Tuesday 19 February 2013 4:00 PM
St George Illawarra Dragons prop Michael Weyman will lace-up his boots for the first time this year when he takes to the field for the 30th annual Charity Shield clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium, Olympic Park on Friday.
The Moruya junior is part of an extended 22-man squad for Red-and-Whites final pre-season fixture before the new competition commences having overcome an ACL injury which sidelined him for the majority of last season.
Dragons teammate Jack de Belin, who started in the front row during the trial clash against the North Queensland Cowboys in Cairns last Saturday, is looking forward to having Weyman back in the line-up.
Michael returning to the line-up really benefits us younger players as he has a smart head for the game and helps with confidence, said de Belin.
He is a dominant player on the field and you learn a lot from him so it is good to see he has overcome his energy and training with the squad.
The Rabbitohs are a very competitive team so it will be a good final test for the entire team ahead of the new competition season.
The Charity Shield commenced in 1982 and so too did the tradition of supporting local charities and causes.
In 2013, proceeds from the Charity Shield will support three charities within the Dragons Community program the St George and Wollongong Public Hospitals in addition to the St.George Foundation.
Dragons Community was first established in 2008 and aims to have a positive impact on peoples lives within our community, which stretches from Kogarah in the north to Batemans Bay in the south.
Dragons Community currently runs more than 32 different programs across its eight pillars:
Health
Education
Cultural
Environment
Women & Girls
Mentoring
Charity
Grassroots Rugby League
St. George Foundation was founded in 1990 by St.George Bank, the major partner of the St George Illawarra Dragons, to help build a secure future for disadvantaged children.
Since its inception, the Foundation has invested nearly $20 million in funding programs that enrich the lives of Australian children who are physically, socially or economically disadvantaged.
The St. George Foundation will help celebrate the 2013 Charity Shield by inviting the children from Wheelchair Sports NSW to take place in the Guard of Honour.
In 2012, St George Foundation was proud to fund their Junior Wheelies Camp, as well as donating to many other worthy charities.
