Tri Nations final, 2006, Australia v New Zealand

New Zealand v Australia
Tri Nations game one, 1999
Australia travelled to Auckland having won the previous Test that year 20-14, in a game that finished three tries apiece. In the tournament opener Stacey Jones fired in front of his home crowd as the Kiwis turned on a phenomenal first half, but would it be enough to hold off a second-half Kangaroos resurgence?

New Zealand v Australia
Tri Nations game one, 2004
The Kiwis boasted good recent form on home soil against the Kangaroos however lost the mid-year Test 37-10 in Newcastle. New Zealand were back to full strength and featured an emerging Sonny Bill Williams who had impressed on debut and won an NRL grand final just two weeks earlier. In wet conditions at North Harbour Stadium, this one would go down to the wire.

Australia v New Zealand
Tri Nations final, 2006
New Zealand were the defending champions having shut Australia out 12 months earlier. The Kangaroos however, entered the final at Sydney Football Stadium having won both previous encounters during the series. Australia captain Darren Lockyer was looking to complete a dream season after leading Queensland to an Origin series win and Brisbane Broncos to NRL premiership glory.

There was a Tri Nations Series in 99?

Yeah was a top game.

I only wish Stacey Jones had slotted that field goal shot in the dying seconds of the 1st half of golden point. The commitment NZ showed to hold out the kangaroos, charge down the shot, regather the ball and then get in position for a shot with only seconds to go was awesome. Had he not shanked it it would have been a fitting end to a great game.

As it stands, still one of the greatest Test matches I've ever seen.

Lockyer capping off the best individual season ever.

Is there any better player in a clutch play?

The guy must not possess nerves, he seems to think clearer at the last minute then he does in the first, bit like Woods in golf, he plays footy for those moments, and all his senses fire off at once.

I understand Thurston was the one that set up that last play, but Lockyer just does it time and time again, can only think of Storm beating a team he is in in the last minute, otherwise it is over to the Lockyer show.

I was dissapointed with the result of last night's Chooseday Night Football poll. Don't get me wrong the 2006 Tri Nation's Final is arguably one of the best games of International Football period BUT I mean it's still available on dvd and NRL.com. It's not as hard to come by as the other matches and in saying, I've seen the match at least three times since buying it on dvd.

Never the less my thoughts:
- The Kiwi's played much better than the Aussies. They were far more calculated and did well given the injuries and the contrast in talent compared to the godly Aussie side.

- Despite having a succesful season, Lockyer saved one of his worst performances for this game. Sure he scored the match winner but he lacked creativity and his boot was off. Shame, given his performance through out the series.

- Ditto Gasnier. He blew a few golden oppurtunities for the Aussies.

-Conversly, Smith was my Man of the Match. He always seemed to come up with the right plays and he just lead the Aussies were around the middle of the ruck.

- I don't know what referee I hate more Ganson or Klein. Ganson is such a pendantic referee but at least the penalty is justified. Klein is just so inconsistent and his calls come as very erratic.

-I know it's possible to get caught up in the moment but Voss' "Give Brent Webb a golden boot!" is by far one of the most offensive things I've ever heard. Why don't we just give Lance Hohaia a golden boot while we're at it?

I agree re clutch players, thought Thurston & Lockyer were disappointing up to that moment, but combined for the biggest play of the game. It's almost as though some players / athletes / participants ( across all sports ) live for that moment when the game / tournament / medal etc is on the line, thrive on the pressure & deliver the goods.

Fox Sports is giving you the chance to play program director, by choosing which classic rugby league match you want to see each week on: Chooseday Night Football.
Each Tuesday night we will screen one of three great rugby league games that are chosen by you voting for your favourite at foxsports.com.au.

This week we look back at three thrillers from the inaugural NRL season of 1998, where last-gasp tries were needed to steal victory at the death.

So depending on which game you want to see won on the siren, select your option in the poll, and the match with the most votes by midnight on Monday will go to air on Fox Sports 3 at 8.30pm (EDT) the following night, Chooseday night.

So get voting and tune in next Chooseday to watch one of the following memorable rugby league games.

Brisbane Broncos v Penrith
Round 3, 1998

This game was billed as a battle of the crafty veteran halfbacks, with Brisbane Broncos' Allan Langer and Penrith's Greg Alexander instrumental to their side's chances. The home side had every reason to be confident heading in to the match, having won their last four against the Panthers in Brisbane. A committed Penrith side travelled to Brisbane intent on stopping the rot, but were also forced to contend with a vintage display from Broncos centre Steve Renouf.

Canberra v Manly
Round 5, 1998

Canberra and Manly had started the 1998 season in uncharacteristic fashion, both having won just one of their first four games. Both team's desperation to get their seasons back on track was evident, with Manly jumping out to strong lead before Canberra began to claw their way back. The experience of Cliff Lyons and a back row featuring Steve Menzies, Nik Kosef and Daniel Gartner looked to have the Raiders' measure, but Green Machine rookies Mark McLinden and Andrew McFadden weren't prepared to lay down without a fight.

Newcastle Knights v Illawarra Steelers
Round 21, 1998

Playing in their last season, Illawarra Steelers were contemplating their likely merger with St George. Despite this distraction the Steelers headed up the F3 to take on frontrunners Newcastle Knights, sitting just outside the top 10 on percentage. Trent Barrett's playing future was uncertain and his clash with the Johns brothers would be a key factor in the derby of the steel cities. Andrew and Matthew had dominated the round 3 clash, won 37-18 by the Knights, but if the Steelers were to gain a position in the top 10 they had no option but to roll Newcastle in front of their own adoring Novocastrian crowd.

Would love to see that Canberra & Manly game.. it was the first unleashing of the 'Super Macs' and they overcame an 18 point deficit to win on the bell.

This week's games:

Canberra Raiders v St George Illawarra Dragons
Round three, 1999
The Dragons were saddled with high expectations, given the strength of their playing roster, but they were under early pressure after back-to-back losses. And they faced a difficult road trip to Canberra, where they were taking on a Raiders pack containing David Furner, Ruben Wiki and rising star Ben Kennedy. The match also features a high-profile halves clash, featuring Laurie Daley and livewire Mark McLinden in the green against Anthony Mundine and Trent Barrett in the Red V.

Northern Eagles v Newcastle Knights
Round one, 2000
The unlikely merger of long-time rivals Manly and North Sydney produced the Northern Eagles, and there were doubts over the team's chances of early success, despite their personnel, as the deal wasn't finalised until after the 1999 season. The fixture attracted a full house of 20,000 fans to NorthPower Stadium in Gosford.

Wests Tigers v Auckland Warriors
Round two, 2000

Foundation clubs Balmain and Western Suburns formed a joint venture, and Tigers legend Wayne Pearce was handed the reins as coach. And the new side took plenty of confidence into their match against the Warriors after drawing with Brisbane Broncos in round one. The thrilling game had plenty of drama, including a sending-off and a controversial video referee decision that had a huge influence on the outcome.

this week's choices from
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26240440-5019333,00.html

State of Origin, NSW v QLD
Game 1, 2000

Although the game had a stunning finish in the usual frantic Origin way this match will always be remembered for the clash between Gorden Tallis and referee Bill Harrigan. Tallis received his marching orders after accusing Harrigan of being a cheat.

State of Origin, NSW v QLD
Game 3, 2002

This was the decider of one of the most exciting series in years. NSW won the opening game easily 32-4, the Maroons the Brisbane leg 26-18. The stage was set for a grand stand finish and the game did not disappoint. Again Gordy featured prominently with his famous tackle on NSW fullback Brett Hodgson followed by his one finger salute to the pro-Blues crowd after fulltime.

State of Origin, QLD v NSW
Game 1, 2005

The first game under new Blues coach Ricky Stuart was Origin at its best. Queensland ran out to a 19-0 lead after 50 minutes only to watch the Blues make a heroic comeback which saw the match go to golden point in extra-time.
