State of Origin, NSW v QLD
Game 1, 2000

Although the game had a stunning finish in the usual frantic Origin way this match will always be remembered for the clash between Gorden Tallis and referee Bill Harrigan. Tallis received his marching orders after accusing Harrigan of being a cheat.

State of Origin, NSW v QLD
Game 3, 2002

This was the decider of one of the most exciting series in years. NSW won the opening game easily 32-4, the Maroons the Brisbane leg 26-18. The stage was set for a grand stand finish and the game did not disappoint. Again Gordy featured prominently with his famous tackle on NSW fullback Brett Hodgson followed by his one finger salute to the pro-Blues crowd after fulltime.

when i saw these 2 i was thinking the theme is of matches in which qld were robbed. first with those 2 knock ons harrigan missed in the one set, that led to a try and then gordys send off, and then 2002 where the video ref somehow ruled out lockys awesome try.

The try given to Williams right now highlights exactly why queenslanders are f**king whinging pussies.

Slater airballs it and propels the ball forward with his knee.... TRY

Hodgson airballs it a year later and propels it forward with his torso..... WAA WAA YOU CHEATS WAAAAAAAA!!!!

Kimmorley will always be remembered in this game for that pass but his game up until now has been shocking. Always fails in the big games.

He certainly has been choking big time in this game for sure...

Mind you he had a blinder in origin 3 this year, so perhaps he is over losing his cool in big games now

I don't think that intercept ball by Kimmorley was as bad as everyone was making it out to be. Bowen was caught out, he knew it, he had to go for the intercept. If he misses the intercept/hangs back on that play, Cooper scores down the other end.

That said, Kimmorley did have a shocker that game, as did many NSW forwards.

This was the first time I've re-watched the match since it was broadcasted live so I found it surreal watching it again. Some thoughts.

- I wonder where Luke Rooney would be had he abandoned Penrith's sinking ship? He certainly was a talent back then.

- Crag Wing once again outplayed his starting hooker. Some things just stay the same don't they. ;-)

- Barrett is an awesome ball player, but his kicking game leaves a lot to be desired. I also found it funny when he fore-armed Thurston in the first half given the Blues fans defence. A grub of the highest order, only second to Paul Gallen.

- Kimmorley receives quite an unfair wrap for his performance. It wasn't THAT bad, it just wasn't good. In saying, when Johns was available the selectors did make the right decision.

- I recall Simpson was supposed to have a wow of a game. I only recall two good runs, the rest I barely noticed him. In fact, Fitzgibbon was the only good forward out there for the Blues.

- Despite fielding a superior team and having a better coach the Blues just lacked one vital ingrediant, anticipation. The maroons were ready to bash them to pillar to post and at the end of the day, the Blues really did rely on the likes of Mini and Barrett to save their asses.

- I'm amazed at how much Slater, Thurston and Smith had improved. They all showed signs of what kind of players they were set to become despite their obvious flaws. Slater was guilty of miss timing a number of runs, which often left Lockyer stranded. Thurston had a good running game, but wasn't confident enough to pass or kick. In saying, I thought he stood up when Lockyer was having trouble to in the later stages and he made a very impressive debut. Smith lacked the traits that would go onto define him like being able to kick out of dummy half and his combination with Slater.

- Given he built an entire career on that one performance, Webb had an inconsistent game if I've ever seen one.

- Price, Civo and Thorn were all awesome as was Crocker.

- Why did the Queensland side consist of 5 (6 if you include Crocker) utilities in their side? No wonder they lost the series.

- Lockyer really needed Hunt out there.

- Williams try was fine, BotD at it's finest. There were some other odd decisions through out.

Funny how one cover tackle can define a performance...

I'd say it was on par with his 05 performance except Bowen wasn't there to take an intercept.

Oh yeah, the one where he's all matey with Joey after the game? This is why I am so tired of Bellamy coaching NSW...

yeh i found though that his offence in 09 was better than his defence, but in 05 his defence was better than his offence, thats just my opinion

Parramatta v Cronulla
Round two, 2001

In the extreme heat at Parramatta Stadium, the Sharks came up against the eventual minor premiers in a week that had been full of drama. With John Lang announcing he would depart the club at season's end and Mat Rogers ruled out for the year with a shoulder injury the odds were stacked against the Sharks. The Eels had opened their campaign with 40-4 defeat of Penrith and hadn't lost to Cronulla at home since 1995 but this one would be a tussle to the end.

Melbourne Storm v Sydney Roosters
Round 10, 2001

The Storm were in the midst of an uncharacteristically flat season however were buoyed by their last-start 52-18 thumping of Northern Eagles. The Roosters meanwhile were in third place and chasing another grand final appearance. With a 21-year-old Anthony Minichiello lighting up the NRL as an attacking force, this game opened as a battle of two tough forward packs before individual brilliance came to the fore in one of the best clashes of 2001.

Wests Tigers v Penrith
Round 12, 2001

The Tigers were coming off a four-match losing streak, smarting from a last-start 66-12 loss to Parramatta. Eventual wooden-spooners Penrith were just searching for consistency and were boosted by the return of playmaker Craig Gower. Despite the sides' lowly placings, expectations for this clash were high after their meeting 12 months earlier had produced one of the biggest turnarounds the game had seen. Could the Tigers get up off the canvas or would Penrith record a rare win?

I remember listening to radio that arvo, waiting for around the grounds updates, the old flat in maroubra, I used to smoke then , we were a mile in front, and then it began....like what i imagine a tsunami is like. 31-8 to 31-32 ..never seen it, never want to.
