THE Tigers have landed a pre-match blow on the Bulldogs with news the club is set to re-sign Chris Lawrence and kill off a massive offer from Canterbury. In a major coup on the eve of tomorrow night's blockbuster, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Chris Lawrence will this week sign a deal with the Wests Tigers worth more than $350,000 a year.
The Tigers reacted swiftly after learning the Bulldogs had expressed interest in the NSW flyer as Canterbury giant Jamal Idris ponders a lucrative offer from the Knights.

Lawrence is the latest big-name player to be taken off the market after fellow centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall signed a lucrative deal to stay with the Roosters last week.

Kenny-Dowall and Lawrence were two of the hottest free agents on the market, with several rival clubs showing interest in the pair.

Kenny-Dowall was being chased heavily by the Warriors, while Lawrence was in the sights of the Bulldogs and at least three other clubs.

The Raiders have also been given a boost on the eve of their clash with the Sharks, yesterday announcing the retention of Tom Learoyd-Lahrs.

The big prop said he had never contemplated leaving the Raiders, who signed him as a youngster from the Broncos.

"It's great to have my future organised before the new season and to stay in Canberra is the right decision for me and, more importantly, my family," Learoyd-Lahrs said. "I want to give back to the club that's given me so much and I believe we're in for a few special seasons.

"For this year it all starts tomorrow against the Sharks and we're looking to get off to a strong start with a win at home."

Raiders CEO Don Furner hailed the signing as a shot in the arm for the club that has for many years struggled to attract star players.

"Tommy is a huge part of our organisation. He's a senior player at the club and a leader," Furner said.

"We're just happy he has decided to stay at the club he's been at for five years now.

"We've shown over the past two years that players who come to the club want to stay at the club and we're building towards a bright future."

Well... that could only mean we'll use that money on Idris (who I'd personally pick over Lawrence anyday). :D Thanks Tigers ;)

Idris is good, but he's no total package like Lawrence. Idris is just a big guy that can break tackles. Lawrence is fast, strong, a dominant defender and a good ball player. Idris doesn't rate.

Idris is just a big guy that can break tackles- and can't read the game defensively...

Besides Lawrence is the next Laurie Daley......:sarcasm:

Didn't the Knights make a similiar statement about Snowden? I will be happy when its done and dusted.

You guys are making it sound like a no contest. Put a poll up in the NRL forum and we'll see how one-sided it is.

One is a right centre, the other a left centre, they could pair up for the blues, and that would be a good start to stopping the Maroon's run.

Actually, Monday night was the most impressive I've seen Idris.
Lawrence has been doing it for five years now though and has got credits in the bank and I wouldn't swap him for any other centre in the comp...Inglis and Jennings, Hodges included.

Lawrence is way better than Idris.

It's blatantly obvious to anyone with an IQ higher than their age (which automatically rules out Bulldogs fans)

Chris Lawrence re-signs with Tigers for five years

AUSTRALIAN Four Nations centre Chris Lawrence has agreed to a massive five-year, $1.7 million deal to remain at the Wests Tigers. The Daily Telegraph understands he will announce his contract extension within days, giving a huge boost before tomorrow's match against the Warriors at Leichhardt Oval.

Canterbury are understood to have aggressively chased Lawrence but the lure of playing outside Benji Marshall ensured the star centre remained at Concord.

The Lawrence news comes on the back of South Sydney announcing yesterday that gun hooker Issac Luke had spurned interest from clubs including Parramatta to sign a four-year extension with the Rabbitohs worth nearly $1.5 million.

Luke always stated he wanted to remain at Redfern but the longer protracted negotiations dragged on, the more Souths fans feared he would walk.

The news comes as Souths prepare for Sunday's big match against Canterbury at ANZ Stadium, Homebush.

Luke led the Dally M Medal last year until injured mid-season, but still won the George Piggins Medal for Souths' best and fairest.

"I've said before that playing with my brothers every week is what I love and I regard South Sydney as my home," Luke said. "This is a dream come true."

Meanwhile, Roosters five-eighth Todd Carney will finally make his first appearance of the season after being cleared to play against Manly at the SFS on Sunday.

Carney, who has been recovering from off-season groin surgery, received physiotherapy yesterday morning and was then told he was ready.

Yet Roosters coach Brian Smith was hesitant to reveal whether he will slot straight into the starting side to play alongside in-form halfback Mitchell Pearce.
