you'd prefer Ponga over Cleary at this stage in their respective careers, Ponga just looks to have so much more to offer

Judging a players capabilities on a bad team is silly. Someone has to get the stats. That player just happens to be Ponga. Last year it was Ross.. year before, probably Ross again. You get the point.

Cleary has already proven he can lead his teams (club and state) to wins. Penrith sitting comfortably in the top 4

Let's list the qualities required to be a top line spine player and compare the two;

1. Leadership - Cleary
2. Passing game - Ponga
3. Kicking game - Cleary
4. Organisational skills - Cleary
5. Maturity - Cleary
6. Ability to garner wins for the team - Cleary

As you can see, Cleary is the winner in just about every facet.

You could have covered points 1, 4 and 6 with point #5, as they all effectively come with maturity and experience

So basically, Cleary has a betting kicking game (you'd hope so, he's a halfback) and Ponga hasn't yet gotten that maturity down pat and all the perks come with it given this is only his first real season of first grade

I had a chuckle at the concept that Cleary led his state to a win, he did absolutely nothing, it was all Teddy and Maloney, if Cordner wasn't in that side and you got beat, guess who your scape goat is

Lol, another year, another young player that people say will be better than Joey...they never are, and while Cleary is a great young player he hasn’t shown anything to indicate he will be either. Neither will Ponga.

I don’t even think Johns holds any records, but he’s still seen as the best by most.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Cleary is a great young player, but people crediting him solely for the Panthers success...it gives zero credit to Maloney who is IMO a much better and more dominate player at this stage.

They were comparing Moylan to Lockyer early on, it's just standard Penrith practice

Lockyer says QLD game plan, Ponga to bring us home....words to that effect.

1st game no pressure.

Mid-way through Origin II and it is clear to see the dominance Cleary has over the game and those around him. He's very controlled. A 20 year old barking orders at origin hardmen like Prior, Frizell, etc, showing them the way.

Ponga has been on the field for about 20 minutes but his impact has been very minimal. In fact, NSW have scored all their points while Ponga has been injected into the game. He has been a disruption in the QLD defensive line and has had a few touched for minimal results. Some here think he's a generational talent, those who know football know otherwise.
