Coaching Candidates 2016

Toovey walked into one of the top 2 squads in the comp and did OK, but Hagan won a comp in his first year, which says to me you don't have to be good if you have the best players.

All the talk out of Manly is that Toovey isn't a coach who makes players better. He might yell and scream a bit, but his coaching is basically "run hard, tackle hard". Foran is getting out of the joint because he doesn't think his current coach can improve his game.

This. "Angry" doesn't automatically make someone a good coach.

Mids to address players today and I know for a fact from family members he is very fired up. The word is he has never been so pissed off in his life. He had to sack a close mate. The down side of employing them really. I hope we broom the place.

I guess we will see how far this goes.

Toovs has managed to take a far superior squad to ours to one more win. Foran is leaving cause he thinks he's an ordinary coach.
Sounds perfect.

Im not sold on Toovey, but its not fair to judge him only on this years results....

He took over in 2012, made a GF in '13 and has a 60% win record overall.

He got handed the keys to the best car in the race.

Is Hagan a super coach because he won the GF in his first year, and made the finals in 02 and 03? He has a 54% winning record here...

Hell, let's get Mal Meninga in. He has a 90% Origin series record.

We need someone that can actually make the players give a shit - like a Gus Gould but someone that would actually do it.

If not we need the whole roster cleared because the current ones have been too programmed in "don't care" mode.

The right coaching team is just as important. The best teams around have a team of coaches who are almost FG ready themselves. Manly, Easts, Storm, Canterbury all had/have assistants who are the top of their game and they're always the first ones mentioned when a job comes up.

I'd like to see whoever is appointed bring in 3 or 4 top assistants.

After we outbid Souths for Bennetts signature, they looked to the UK super league and signed a coach who was unproven in the best competition in the world

I'd say it's worked out pretty well for them, wouldn't you?

I didnt say it wasnt possible. Maguire had a fair roster and systems in place. Newcastle is a rabble.

Thoughts on the Walker brothers putting their hands up to bring their radical coaching style to the Knights?? Arrival on Triple M quotes them saying they are defitinetly applying.

I'd be interested to see how their tactics would work against better opposition in the NRL but would prefer us not to be the Guinea pig

I'd like to see them get a run in the NRL somewhere because the game could obviously use some new thinking but I can't see any club really taking that risk. The game has progressed to a stage where winning and holding possession is everything (entertainment be damned) and I'd imagine that any club adopting their philosophy would get killed by the teams that are focussed on winning possession above all else.

Then again we're already shot defensively so we'd might as well give them a run because we have nothing to lose by taking the risk.

I'd be bringing in a specialist defensive coach as well though (somebody actually qualified - not Bedsy).

According to McGuigan we're looking for a "visionary" coach.

Not sure they'll find that but it sounds better than looking for a "Newcastle" one.

My money is on Hagan

Who else would have the vision to bring Todd lowrie to the club next year. Hagan is timing his run to perfection

I feel Brown will be the best option for us. I personally do rate Toovey and feel he deserves a better opportunity to be a coach but with the clean out at Manly the only discard I would take is Ballin and the last thing I want is him to bring other waste to take up a bench that belongs to Tapine/Vaivai/Levi/Clydsdale/Mataora etc. Still skeptical about Brown's potential but he knows what a winning culture is.

We may not have the structures and rosters like Souths and Roosters but Robinson and Maguire both installed an attitude that played massive roles in their success and I would like to think Brown learnt the same lessons in the ESL like they did. Another connection to that competition and also a club that has always been successful, always been at the pinnacle of the Super League would be handy.

Couldn't agree more. On paper we're a top 8 side, the players just stopped caring.

Even if you look at our first 4 wins, they were ugly... but our commitment (esp in D) was there.
