We need speedy players - it's a no brainer. Fitness and speed trainers needed as well.

Speed provides excitement. It is essential and we have got to have speed men in the backs and forwards.

Dragons captain Ben Hunt has spoken to coaching candidate Shane Flanagan about the possibility of the former premiership winner leading St George Illawarra’s revival.

On the eve of a huge weekend for the Dragons as they close in on a decision about their new head coach, this masthead can reveal Hunt and Flanagan spoke at length this week about the vacant position.

Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou confirms Cody Walker to miss Dragons game with quad injury.

Flanagan held talks with St George Illawarra chairman Andrew Lancaster and director Ben Creagh after re-entering the race as a contender following Jason Ryles’ decision to turn down a four-year deal.

But those talks have extended to a conversation between the club’s most influential player and the ex-Cronulla premiership-winning coach.

Flanagan and Hunt have known each other for a long time, with Flanagan a former assistant to Paul McGregor at the Red V and then recruitment boss last year.

Flanagan brokered Hunt’s two-year contract extension which is set to keep the Queensland State of Origin star in Wollongong until the end of 2024.

Ben Hornby, who will be in the opposition coaching box when South Sydney clash with the Dragons at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday, remains in the mix as the Dragons board mulls an experienced clipboard carrier or one of the new breed.

Flanagan’s appointment has previously had resistance from powerbroker Peter Doust, who still carries significant influence at the club which has been forced to alter their thinking after missing Ryles.

Manly coach Anthony Seibold, who appointed Flanagan as his assistant this year, has given him his blessing to take the Dragons job if offered it.

Hunt is yet to extensively comment on his own future after the Dragons sacked his longtime ally Anthony Griffin last month, with a number of rivals including the Titans, Raiders and Bulldogs monitoring the situation.

But St George Illawarra’s interim coach Ryan Carr denied the star halfback was unsettled.

“I was pretty sure after he backed up from Origin and played like he did against Penrith ... he looks pretty settled to me,” Carr said.

The Dragons will be trying to climb off the bottom of the ladder against a Rabbitohs team missing captain Cameron Murray, Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Jai Arrow and Tom Burgess. Jack de Belin is sidelined for St George Illawarra after a heavy concussion in a narrow loss to the Panthers last week.

“I think there’s obviously been some really good signs for most of the team,” Carr said. “The boys have been competing, our effort and our energy has been there in all three of those games.

“There’s areas that we’ve identified that we need to improve in, and we need to execute better, and I feel like we’ve taken massive strides in that. But, ultimately, it doesn’t mean anything if we don’t go out there and play well [on Saturday] and do a good job and get the two points, which is what we’re going for.”

I do recall reading about Flanagan - after the punishment by the NRL was announced - that he had indeed been giving some input into a team .

However the NRL discovered this and acted accordingly , that was taken care of and as already said by all and sundry he has done his time .

The fact that this now appears once again- just as he has a excellent chance of resurrecting his 1st grade coaching career is at the least very coincidental .

We don't need Board Members who do not act in the Club's best interest and who continue the faction fighting and self-interest actions.

In my opinion, the BOD should have never extended Griffin but after doing so should have admitted the mistake and immediately negotiated terms with Hasler and Flannagan. One of these two should have been appointed head coach by now. In addition, we should have also appointed a new Head of Football and a Recruitment/Retention officer by now.

You just have to listen to Flanno commentate the Dragons games. He knows the team inside and out already. Appears to have a good relationship with the players as well. If they don't want to start from square 1 he's the obvious choice.

I was referring to the man’s input into a team when he had been banned , that was reported at the time of the incident . What we are now reading is a rehash of that , but written differently , in fact a very demeaning manner to cast more doubt and suspicion on him .

Hasler was my first choice but given he is not mentioned by anyone, I'd have to say that Flannagan is the obvious choice now. Absolutely a big NO to the idea of Young being our coach.
