Are these up for renewal in 2013 as well?
We got well dudded in the last deal where Telstra got naming rights AND internet/mobile covg for a mere $10mill a year (1/2 of what the AFL got for its naming rights and internet, $10mill Toyota, $10mill Telstra).

We should be in for a nice windfall with naming rights alone being worth $10mill+ a year and then whatever Telstra are willing to pay for internet and mobile phone rights. They paid $31mill a year for afl!

The NRL deal was struck in 2007 and the AFL deal in 2011 - could explain some of the value difference.

The big issue with the naming rights sponsor I have is their inclusion on the NRL logo. I'd rather see what happened in 2003 (?) where "Telstra Premiership" was above the NRL logo, rather than incorporated into it as we have seen since.

It was 2001, but your point is a good one.

The previous AFL deal they still split the naming rights and internet/mobile covg and ended up with nearly double our deal. This time they have just resigned Toyota and got a windfall from Telstra taking their equivalent deal to $41mill+ a year compared to our current $12mill. Lets see if we manage to match or beat that $41mill shall we?

Stupid isn't it when RL obviously has fans from other countries while the AFL would rely on expats mainly :x

If Telstra does indeed continue to own the naming rights to the NRL competition, I would like to see them put some effort into the online portion (even if they're forced to as part of the agreement). By this, I mean streaming games live online within Australia, not just to those outside the country.

Not everyone has Foxtel/Austar nor wants to pay for all the associated and unwanted channels just to receive the sports channels solely for watching RL (it's the only reason I have Foxtel). Even if they charged a subscription to view it online, they could gather some more revenue for the NRL and satisfy the other potential customers that had been previously missing out.

To make the above worthwhile, they'd have to improve their streaming speed and image quality, as it's quite pathetic at the moment, looking at the Game Analyser in its current form.

Apologies for going off-topic here, I wasn't sure where else to put these thoughts.

Telstra having the naming rights and showing the games on the net are 2 different issues mate. But I agree with your sentiments.

What's in it for Foxtel/FTA's if Telstra can stream matches online?

How do Foxtel subscriptions hold up if you don't have to pay for all that other shit to watch league? You gotta tread a fine line. It's gonna be easier said than done.

Even leagues like NFL still don't offer their domestic consumers the ability to watch online, but let overseas viewers watch as much as they want.

One thing that we definitely could get is games on demand to stream. I'd watch on delay for a fee if it meant not having to pay for Foxtel, or in Melbourne's case getting no access to games regularly enough.

But then Telstra being Telstra will want you to be on Telstra's network no doubt. We're still some way off having the kind of scenarios we all know will happen in the future. Theres too much money to made/lost currently.

What's the AFL's deal with online rights?

Ideally, the rights to broadcast online could be open to whoever wants to bid on it. However they want to sort it, whether it's tied to the FTA/PayTV broadcaster or completely separate, it's an excellent option to have for those who want or need it. It would give more options to fans who want to watch the game, which is only a good thing.

Even if it's $10/month or a similarly fair price per game to stream, for many it's much better than $60+/month for Foxtel. The bit that hurts the pocket with Foxtel is that that you're paying for it all off-season with no RL to watch. For someone like me who only watches RL on it, that's quite expensive for something that isn't being used.

What's the AFL's deal with online rights?

I would like to know this also. I was under the impression that Telstra will be broadcasting the AFL games live online. If this is the case, there is no reason this couldn't be done for the NRL also.

Who cares who the sponsor is. As long as they do the code honour, I'm happy.

Unless it's f*cking News Ltd!!!!!!
