Gold Coast trainer Billy Johnstone has been granted a release from his final year contract with the Titans.

The much sought-after strength and conditioning coach is tipped to return to Cowboys to join Neil Henry in Townsville.

Johnstone was initially contracted to the Titans until the end of next season.

Johnstone will be replaced by Chris McLellan, who has worked as his assistant for the past two years.

McLellan will take on the head conditioning role at the club on a three-year deal.

A new contender for the Wests Tigers halfback jersey next season has emerged with the club signing Titans pivot Josh Lewis, putting Mathew Head's future at the club in further doubt, particularly as he is sidelined with a recurring shoulder injury and a thumb problem. John Morris has another crack at the No.7 jersey that was taken from him by Head earlier in the year when the Tigers face Melbourne on Monday.

Benji Marshall is also in the mix. "I see [Marshall] as a good option for that position for us down the track, he could play there easy," coach Tim Sheens said. "But he needs schooling and a lot of work and we'd like to see him get through this year without any problems and, as he overcomes that and gets through the end of the year and has a good off-season, I think the kid can do anything."

A Balmain junior, Lewis is returning to the Tigers on a one-year deal. Head, off contract at the end of the year, has a number of clubs chasing his signature, including the Warriors, but is keen to stay with the Tigers. However, with salary cap restrictions and Head's questionable fitness, his future remains in the air.

Hope the Titans are freeing up all this cash for a reason.

Seem to be a lot departing of late, with little signings apart from Zilman

They're mainly investing on young guys within the club. Plus Laffranchi was upgraded.

Even with upgrades, there seems to be a hole in the figues somewhere.

Peterson
Stosic
Kahler
Amos
Sandow
Hodgeson
Lewis
Swain
Cooper

Add to that Johnstone, and the contracts we let go last year early, in Mathers, and Carney, Turner, Hilder, and Walker who hasnt played a game.

Not sure what there up to

I thought you guys were happy to be rid of him after the players got exhausted mid season?

Did the Titans receive some kind of salary cap concession when they rejoined last year? I thouoght I remember reading somewhere that they did, which is why they have so many players on their books. Perhaps this is the last year of the concession and they need to cut some players.......

Yes they did,and like STGeorgeIllawarra had to do they have to release players to get back under the cap.
Saints were offloading players and not signing for 2 or 3 years to get back.

Fitzgibbon re-signs

Fitzgibbon agrees to 2009

Fitzy_Terms.jpg

Sydney Roosters captain Craig Fitzgibbon has agreed to terms for an extension of his contract to play with the club until the completion of the 2009 season.
Fitzgibbon joined the Roosters in 1999 and will play his 10th season with the club next year.
The Roosters captain has confirmed he was keen to extend his stay at the club for another season to work with the many young players developing and progressing through the ranks.
“I’m thrilled that I can stay with the Roosters and am looking forward to the remainder of this season and 2009,” Fitzgibbon said.
“I’m glad the process is over and done with, it’s been a long process but my heart is with the roosters and I’m delighted to be staying here for another season.”
“We are looking forward to a bright future and I want to be part of it with all the young players around at the moment.”
The news comes after a big year for Fitzgibbon who has not only led the Roosters back into finals contention but also gained a recall to representative football with the NSW Blues and Country.
