Covell re-signs with Cronulla

Signing on ... Luke Covell will sign a new deal with the Sharks on Monday. / The Daily Telegraph

THE Sharks have received a major boost on the eve of the finals, with point-scoring machine Luke Covell about to sign a new one-year deal.
While Covell's unlikely rise to NRL top scorer doubles as one of this season's feel-good stories, his protracted contract talks have given Sharks fans a headache during an otherwise positive season.
But The Daily Telegraph can reveal Covell is poised to sign a new deal in coming days after fruitful talks between his management and Sharks officials.
The 26-year-old winger's agent Steve Gillis met with Cronulla CEO Tony Zappia on Thursday to finalise the deal, which will tie up the winger for a further season.
Preparations for tonight's clash against North Queensland at Toyota Park prevented Covell from agreeing to terms yesterday. He will re-sign Monday.
Gillis said Covell had attracted interest from rugby clubs and the UK Super League but had always expressed a desire to remain with the Sharks.
"His family lives in the area and he doesn't want to move away,'' Gillis said. "I had a good talk with Zap and it was all very positive. We are happy with a one-year deal but with an important match coming up, I'd thought I'd wait until afterthe game to talk the offer through with Luke.''
The Sharks have always wanted to retain the New Zealand international, but his emergence as one of the form wingers in the NRL translated to salary-cap pressure on the club's 2009 plans.
Cronulla have already spent up big, attracting internationals Trent Barrett and Anthony Tupou and leaving little room to move.
With Covell staying put, it is now inevitable that fellow winger Misi Taulapapa will be joining Bryson Goodwin elsewhere next season.
The Daily Telegraph understands Penrith have already expressed interest in Taulapapa, another unlikely 2008 success story at the Sharks. Goodwin signed with the Bulldogs several months ago.
Cronulla head into tonight's final premiership game needing a minor miracle to deliver the club's first minor premiership since 1999.
As well as victory over the lowly Cowboys, the Sharks need both Manly and Melbourne to stumble against Penrith and Souths respectively because of their inferior points difference.

Brisbane have lured former St George Illawarra hooker Aaron Gorrell back to the NRL as a replacement for their departing rake Michael Ennis. Gorrell, currently at French-based Super League club Catalans Dragons, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Broncos, briefly reversing the trend of players ditching the NRL for the increased money on offer in Europe.
Gorrell, who kicked a sideline conversion to defeat the Broncos in 2006 while with St George Illawarra, had an option in his favour with Catalans for next season but after an SOS from Brisbane, he opted for a return.

Can't really blame Elliott for that loss. We've got too many players fighting for the same positions. Unfortunately other teams are going to benefit from it.

Wouldnt matter-if a players happy where he is,hell stay.
Look at Cronk, accepted less than what was on offer elsewhere to stay at melbourne (who are succesful, happy and well coached-coincidence?)

I can't imagine many players choose to stay in Toyota Cup or Reserve Grade if there's another club out there with a first grade spot for them though. Cooper Cronk is on decent money playing for the best team in the NRL... it's worth accepting less then what you're worth to have what he has.

Good signing there by the Broncs.

Sharks net young half

By Darren Walton
September 10, 2008 WITH one eye on the NRL finals and the other on the future, the Sharks are abuzz with excitement after unearthing a rare talent to hopefully fill the boots of departing half-back Brett Kimmorley.
Eighteen-year-old Jason McGrady - the nephew of former Rothman's Medallist Ewan McGrady - is joining Cronulla on a two-year deal after inspiring Orara Valley to a dramatic Group 2 grand final victory over Woolgoolga in Coffs Harbour.

McGrady bagged two tries, including a spectacular 85-metre solo effort, in the Axemen's 19-18 extra-time triumph at Woolgoolga Sports Ground.

While the precocious teenager, along with fellow 18-year-old Axemen recruit Nick Reid, will join Cronulla's under-20s program, the street tip is that Sharks coach Ricky Stuart is planning to blood McGrady alongside Trent Barrett during the second half of next season.

“There's been very good reports on him and he's certainly been identified as a player of the future,” Sharks chief Tony Zappia said.

“Ricky has seen him on tape and is very impressed with what he's got to offer and he's very hopeful that he's going to come through the Toyota Cup and obviously next 18 months play first grade.”

Hailing from the same country division as Melbourne Storm superstar Greg Inglis, McGrady is viewed by the Sharks as another little gem.

Sharks talent scout Craig Wilson says he especially admires the young aboriginal's skill and toughness.

“Probably the beauty of Jason is that he's one of those kids that's just a natural footballer and what excites us is that he's pretty willing on both sides of the game,” Wilson said.

“He doesn't stay away in defence. He just puts his body in as much as when he gets the ball, which is a good sign. He's certainly got some qualities.

“He's got the attribute of speed and skill combined with putting his body on the line.

“So that's a good thing to have at that age.

“And the things he does, he does with a fair bit of class and the more you watch him, the better you think he could be.”

McGrady's father, Jason McGrady Snr, played for the Bulldogs in the early 90s and, along with the rest of the family, is moving to Sydney to support his son.

“He's got a good network behind him,” Wilson said.

“It will be a big adjustment for him, coming from Orara Valley to Sydney, but we're very confident that he'll do it.

“He seems to be pretty happy with it all.

“Also what's good for him is that he's playing that standard of football in the bush.

“The old man has also played at a high level and obviously the uncle.

“So he's obviously grown up with football, which probably explains why he can instinctively do things.”

With Kimmorley heading to the Bulldogs next season, Cronulla have moved quickly to shore up the halfback ranks, beating several other NRL clubs to snare McGrady and Reid.

“Between the two of them, they're both pretty handy footballers and they'll build up a bit of a combination, which is always important at that level,” Wilson said.
