NEWCASTLE Knights prop Jesse Royal has given up living the dream of a professional rugby league player, and will focus on fatherhood, working in the mines and playing for Kurri Kurri next season.

The 28-year-old put his family before chasing another NRL club after his contract with the Knights expired at the end of the 2008 season.

The New Zealander was told in July he would not be offered a deal at the Knights next season and his manager Daryl Mather tried to arrange a deal with the Warriors so he could return home.

But Royal's wife, Kylie, is set up in a good job at EnergyAustralia, his boys Matarae, 3, and Tumai, 22 months, are settled in day care.

The hard-working prop said he wanted to make a life for his family in Newcastle.

"The decision I've made was all about my family, so it was not that tough a decision to make," Royal said.

"I've got no regrets about the decision I have made and I had to do what's right for them because they have been there for me the whole time.

"I couldn't handle the pressure of not knowing what direction my life was going to go and I love Newcastle, I love the area and the lifestyle so it was an easy decision."

Royal made his NRL debut with the Knights in April last year and played 10 first-grade games in his debut season. He played 19 matches this year.

A former cook in the army, Royal was recruited from New Zealand's Bartercard Cup competition by Penrith in 2004.

He joined the Knights in 2005 and, after a slow start, he played his best season in 2008, only to be told he was no longer required.

"I feel very fortunate to have played the 20-odd first-grade games that I did," Royal said. "I'm happy that I achieved what I did, and there are a lot of people who have not played 20 games of first grade for the Knights."

Royal decided to link with Coalfields club Kurri Kurri after being offered a job in the mines, and did not put a time frame on the length of his career.

"I'll just play it by ear," he said.

"My body is holding up pretty good at the moment, so I've got at least another couple of seasons in me."

The Bulldogs, who finished equal sixth with Nelson Bay this year, have also signed former Knights hooker Luke Quigley for the 2009 season.

Bulldogs secretary David Ross said the club were on the verge of signing another two former Knights players and he hoped to have those deals completed by the end of the month.

Scrap Shaun Foley signing with the Waratahs. I just received a email from his father. Nothing has been sorted for Shaun yet according to him.

Melbourne Storm has this week secured the signatures of EIGHT players as it looks to build its playing stocks for the 2009 season and beyond.

The new signings compliment the acquisition of Canberra hooker Ryan Hinchcliffe earlier this year, and the re-signings of Dallas Johnson, Adam Blair, Cooper Cronk, Jeff Lima, Sika Manu, Anthony Quinn, Greg Inglis and Aiden Tolman.

As has been reported, backrower Matt Cross has joined from the Gold Coast Titans on a one-year deal, while four other new players will join the club.

Storm football operations manager Frank Ponissi believes Cross can have an immediate impact in 2009.

“The Storm has proven in the past that not only young players get improved within our system, but the culture here as has a history of rejuvenating players mid-career as well,” said Ponissi.

Backrower Louis Fanene has been elevated from the under-20’s squad, while Clifford Manua and promising front-rower Sinbad Kali have signed new one-year deals, rounding out a busy week at the club.

Apart from Cross, the four new faces at the Storm next year include Penrith centre William Isa, former Bulldogs five-eighth Arana Taumata, Souths centre Andre Itula, and James Maloney who captains Wentworthville in the New South Wales VB Cup.

While the salary cap is having its effect on the Storm squad, Ponissi believes the players signed this week will form the basis of a successful team long term.

“There’s no doubt the salary cap is biting us hard,” said Ponissi.

“Over the past couple of seasons we lost a lot of experienced players because of the salary cap, but that’s the reason why it’s there and we’re in the middle of it at the moment. Success is starting to take its toll.

“This year we’ve re-signed the core of our team for the next few years, but the reality is our depth is going to be tested.”

Melbourne Storm recruitment manager Darren Bell believes the new signings will inject an even greater level of enthusiasm when the squad reassembles for pre-season training in November.

“With these signings today, we’ve brought in the next generation of Storm players who we believe can bring us future success,” said Bell.

“We’re confident, while most of these names are low profile now, once they’re within the Storm environment and playing alongside the likes of Cam Smith, Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and the like, their development will be fast-tracked and be future Storm first-grade players.”

Player signings:

NAME - AGE - CONTRACT LENGTH - POSITION - FORMER CLUBS

William Isa - 19 - 2 years - Centre - Panthers
Matt Cross - 27 - 1 year - Backrow/Front-row - Titans / Panthers
Arana Taumata - 19 - 1 year - Halfback / Five-eighth - Bulldogs
Andre Itula - 20 - 1 year - Centre / Wing - Rabbitohs
James Maloney - 22 - 2 years - Halfback - Wentworthville
Louis Fanene - 20 - 2 years - Backrow - Storm under-20’s
Sinbad Kali - 21 - 1 year - Front-row - Storm
Clifford Manua - 27 - 1 year - Front-row - Broncos / Sharks / Storm

http://news.leaguehq.com.au/sport/contract-extensions-for-three-raiders-20080918-4j5j.html

Josh Miller, Glen Buttriss and Joel Thompson have firmed their commitment to the Canberra Raiders, with all three extending their current contracts with the NRL club.
Miller, a 25-year-old utility forward, has extended his contract until the end of 2011 after playing 65 first grade matches for the club since making his debut in 2004.
"I'd play here forever if I could," Miller said.
Hooker Buttriss, 23, has re-signed until the end of 2010 and promising 20-year-old backrower Joel Thompson until the end of 2011 after a stunning year in the Toyota Cup.
Thompson was named in the Toyota Cup team of the year, nominated for the George Green Medal for best rising indigenous star and also made his NRL debut.

Is Joseph Tomane seriously still off contract? I can't believe that the storm or another club haven't snapped him up yet.

Some good signing news for the raiders
without dobbo and carney the raiders were in dire need of some half depth, and its great to have a bloke who's played with some of our rising stars and has already established combinations

mc crone was very talented when he left canberra and i believe he still is, all reports indicate an unhappy time at penrith, but who can blame him, elliott's a f**king clown shoes

MANLY hooker Matt Ballin will give the club a timely boost leading into its preliminary final by signing a long-term contract extension this week.

Ballin will knock back offers from Brisbane and St George Illawarra to extend his stay with the Sea Eagles for either three or four years.

There were concerns Manly might struggle this season when they lost inspirational rake Michael Monaghan to English club Warrington after last year's grand final loss to Melbourne.

However, Ballin and fellow hooker Heath L'Estrange have given the Sea Eagles outstanding service out of dummy half.

"It's taken a bit of time but we're close to a deal," Ballin said.

"I'm definitely going to stay here and I'm looking forward to getting it done. We've pretty much agreed.

"There were a few clubs interested but Manly have been good to me and I don't want to go anywhere.

"There's obviously a good culture here at the moment."

Manly coach Des Hasler is yet to settle on his team for the penultimate game of the season, although it appears Adam Cuthbertson will again miss out. L'Estrange squeezed the ball-playing forward out of the line-up against the Dragons last weekend, scoring a try and setting up another in an impressive display.

Cuthbertson was a big-name absentee at Manly's fan day on Thursday. He was training with the Sea Eagles' NSW Cup team, which played yesterday.

Hasler insisted Cuthbertson, who has played 21 games this season, was still in the selection mix.

"It's a week-to-week thing," Hasler said.

THE Northern Pride has added to its cache of local talent by signing North Queensland Cowboys under-20 players Chris Riesen, Scott Idec and Tom Humble to its 2009 roster.
Despite the Pride’s debut Queensland Cup campaign only finishing a fortnight ago, the club has wasted no time in settling the nucleus of its roster for next season, yesterday announcing 25 players that had signed.
Missing from that list was inaugural captain Chris Sheppard who missed the last two games of the season with a broken foot.
But coach Andrew Dunemann said the experienced half would return.
"He’ll be playing, he just hasn’t signed yet," Dunemann said. "We need to speak to a few of those guys."
Also missing were members of this year’s expanded squad Warren Jensen, Richie Marsters, Ryan Bartlett, Eric Warria, Farran Willett and Kahu Wehi.
Dunemann said not all players would be re-signed.
"I don’t think they are hard decisions (to make) because you can’t have them training like that all year and string them all along – you’ve got to be fair to the players as well," he said.
The snaring of young Cowboys Riesen, Idec and Humble continues the club’s commitment to local
products.
Riesen is an Atherton junior and former Cairns District Rugby League rookie of the year, while Idec, a Southern Suburbs forward, will be looking to rebound with the Pride after undergoing two knee reconstructions.
"It’s an opportunity for him more than anything," Dunemann said of Idec. "And I’m sure Chris Riesen’s out to prove a point because he believes he can do a lot better (than he did in the under-20s this year)."
Blackwater Crushers junior Humble heads to the Pride with big raps and will shore up depth in the halves.
The former Queensland under-19 player finished as the Cowboys’ top point-scorer in the under-20s, finishing the season with 95 points from 12 tries and 23 goals.
"He’s a match-winner and hopefully he’ll bring that X-factor (with him)," Dunemann said.
The club also signed CDRL players Callan Myles (Ivanhoes) and Steve Kim (Kangaroos).
The Pride has its presentation night this Friday, with Dunemann encouraging his players to then take a complete break from the game until the team returns for pre-season training on November 24.
