China isn't there because they went into full scale lockdown.

They stopped the spread by taking extraordinary measures.

But nah, let's not because... economy?

We should take precautions but citizens in the west just would not accept what China did. To put it in perspective this would be the Australian response if we followed china's lead. Lets assume sydney is the focus point because it has the most cases

Firstly Sydney is shut off from the outside world. Nobody gets in or out. Within Sydney you cant leave your house except for food and medical attention. People randomly check to see if people are in doors and while they are there a quick temperature is taken of the people in the household. Anyone with a fever is off to the quarantine centre. Private vehicles are banned from the streets.

Secondly using mass surveillance technology a campaign is started to track down everyone who had stepped foot in Sydney during the time the virus was there. A story i remember was a restaurant owner having the cops rock up and tell him because he was in Hubei recently hes got to stay in doors. He later went outside to get some cabbages and was called up and told to get the f**k inside his house.

While this is going on scomo is using his new found powers over industry to direct them to produce goods that are needed. In the case of china masks. Australia i don't know toilet paper. He would also build hospitals in a week

China showed the terrifying power of the state using modern technology when they really want to crack down on its citizens. People can argue that the ends justifies the means here but im not sure how we would deal with these measures. People are already shitty about the nrl being in danger. China would have made that decision very easy. It would be nrl shuts down and anyone who complains mysteriously disappears.

Now selfishly as a westerner if they had brutally cracked down on its citizens just a couple of weeks earlier it would have stopped 95% of cases so missed opportunity there china.

Here is an interesting article including the restaurant owner story about what measures china is taking

To be fair, this is a treatment not a vaccine.

Institutes in Canada and Germany believe they’re close. But the earliest timeline for mass production in November.

November would make it one of the fastest produced vaccines in human history so not a bad effort.,

Absolutely. I don’t think it’s a realistic target.

But it did feed the joke that they cancel hockey in Canada and within a short time frame they’d discovered a vaccine.

I’d handle that if they said this is needed for a few weeks or something than back to normal. This constant being in limbo doesn’t help anyone

NRL go;s broke, from corona virus, we need to start a fresh competition

4 sydney teams
4 brisbane
2 melbourne
perth
aderlaide
2 nz teams
north queenland
newcastle
canberra

and the 18th team would be ?

If money was a issue then remove the travel and accommodation costs

Get rid of Broncos, Nth Qld, Titans, Warriors, Melbourne

And in their place promote Newtown, Norths, CC, Balmain and Illawarra

The collected handling of the situation by the AFL today was a stark contrast to V'landys' 'poor bugger me' routine.

No mention of 'catastrophic' or the players will have to cough up. Just a firm response that they will get on with things and deal with the situation.

not exactly true

AFL players will be forced to take pay cuts as the entire industry braces to "tighten their belts" amid the coronavirus crisis hitting the world.

The NRL should at least demand clubs cull unnecessary waste before giving them additional money and asking the government for money.
At least cull all the hangers on like head of football, trainers, wrestling coaches etc. Sure a head coach is necessary but justify the rest of them.

Where did I say not to do full on lockdown?

It is this uncertainty that is the issue. If you knew it was 2-3 weeks then good.

I have then annual leave for that. I would also pull my kid out of school. I won’t yet cause no idea how long it will be for

I don’t have the annual to take 2 weeks only for it to be mandatory lockdown for a few weeks after.

Businesses can play for such a shutdown like we see over christmas. It is the having no clear path forward that is the issue not so much the time off
Your insistence that authorities all know what an exact timeframe is - mind boggling. It is so incredibly clear that nobody, not even the experts, know how long this might last.

Old Rugba Leeg hasn’t done one thing that has impressed me since he took over. From his negative comments about Perth to yesterday’s little sooky doomsday rant, this bloke has been a backwards step from
Beattie for mine.

Also, keep him away from the media.

Greenberg might come across the bookish public servant, but at keast he projects a measured and good public citizen.

V'Landys looks like he sleeps in a coffin.

You mean the Chairman who wants to 'grow the game' by not expanding to new markets, focusing on suburban stadiums, and is currently heading up Racing NSW is an incompetent snake oil dealer?

AFL were clear. Reducing the season, because they know play will be halted at some point. They are planning for eventualities. The NRL are the equivalent of putting their fingers in their ears and screaming 'If I can't hear you, it's not real'.

I don't think it could be put any clearer than this:
https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/heal...ion-issues-blunt-coronavirus-warning-c-747300

“Be fast, have no regrets. You must be the first mover. The virus will always get you if you don’t move quickly,” Dr Ryan said.
“If you need to be right before you move, you will never win,”
“Perfection is the enemy of the good when it comes to emergency management,” Dr Ryan said.
“Speed trumps perfection.
The problem in society we have at the moment is that everyone is afraid of making a mistake. Everyone is afraid of the consequence of error.
“But the greatest error is not to move. The greatest error is to be paralysed by the fear of failure.”
