if they don't want him, why should we ?

they dont want him for a reason

we should be looking at players that will make a difference not just picking up players because they are cheap and wont add much to our squad

Exactly that's what Canberra is for:D

True and a lot of the crap he bought in where just for the year.I think Webb and Reni where signed Prior.
Was Hicks,Walker wahtura and Casey McGuire by memory. All signed short term to give depth for the year. And all cheap.Casey turned out ok.

Every coach makes a few bad calls. Look at T-Rex and Des hasler.

Kearney and Nolan together bought some crap... but they also bought and retained the nucleus of todays squad.

I think the crap they bought they mostly did because we had no money (and the crap was cheap) and because our juniors such as those listed by Pou were not ready for FG at the time.

Stuart and Nolan together bought Peats, Norman and Mossop and further retained some of the current crop who needed renewing during 2013. They also bought Santi (who) was probably going to be crap based on how his short stint here went under BA.

Who bought Edwards?

He brang Nolan to the club, along with Arthur's, but the buck stopped with Kearney.

If he deserves the blame for the squad underperforming then surely he deserves the credit for the quality of the squad he left behind.

Simplistic, and intellectually dishonest.

Recruitment officer deserves credit for recruitment, regardless of who sat on his interview panel.

First grade/head coach deserves credit (or otherwise) for overall first grade performance, also regardless of who sat on his interview panel.

Cutting it any other way means any merkin that ever met or even shook Nolan's hand could probably claim some credit for recruitment or retention. Just because the buck stops with the head coach for first grade performance, doesn't mean he gets automatic credit for anything else that happens in the club or due to natural causes while he happens to be there.

Except that the recruitment officer when SK was here reported to SK and SK signed off on EVERY SINGLE recruitment done. The recruitment officer was given a 'type' of player and a budget to shop for but he didnt sign the cheques and his recommendations were either approved or rejected. So the buck in fact did stop with the Head Coach.

Now it stops with DA.

You'll find the head coach has to approve (or not) every recruit. After all, he has to manage the salary cap in the current and future years in order to facilitate succession planning.

Great now we will have merkins cheering for or bagging players based on which coach or CEO signed them.

Kearney's coaching ability may be questionable but it was him who decided to starting focusing on juniors and put some structures in place. If that was so easy why didn't hagan and Anderson do the same?

Next year is the end of the Kearney's 5 year plan and we have some pretty promising juniors coming though. Remember when t-Rex was in his final year manly outbidded us for his services. This year we have players like Pauli/ junior/ kelepi/Pritchard all around 20-21 with the potential to be better the t-Rex but we have them all signed up for a few years. If they were off contract I am sure we would be paying a lot for them especially for Pauli/junior. This is where I reckon Kearney improved our club, putting in structures to better identify juniors and sign them up for a few years. This should ensure we always have decent squad

Only as long as the system is maintained.

As we saw after Smith left, the club can stay strong for a few years, but eventually the overall strength of the squad declines considerably when coaches neglect junior recruitment/retention.

It's great that we put in place a training squad for the more talented youngsters, and have managed to keep the best ones we already had.

It's a bit facile to be talking about SK's 5 year plan. Neither he, nor the chair, nor the CEO who put it in place are around anymore.
If the 5 year plan was just about junior retention, well then it was a pretty stupid plan, it needed to be the establishment of an ongoing system (hopefully that is what it was).

The success of this season is more about Ricky then SK, but far more about Arthur(s) than either of them. It was the recruitment of a spine (Norman + Peats), and some forwards (Ma'u [came on board after SK sacked, and Ricky around], Edwards, Mossop, Gower) that has made a huge difference, but the biggest 'difference maker' has been someone teaching them how to play footy.

Just having the players meant nothing - we still got pumped by the Roosters early, and also the Cows, but Arthur has been teaching them how to react to disappointment, how to play attacking footy (leading the league in tries per game), and how to defend (although not superb, massively improved on previous years).
The cattle always look better when they are being taught better!

You're goddamned right it is.

It's a bit facile to be talking about SK's 5 year plan. Neither he, nor the chair, nor the CEO who put it in place are around anymore.

Nolan was here the entire time, doing what he was brought here to do. Brad Arthur's has also been here since late 2010, with a brief sojourn in Manly through most of 2013. Do you really think Sticky or anyone else would have changed anything? Media and fan focus was all on the top 17. That's all Stuart and the club's management would have cared about.

If the 5 year plan was just about junior retention, well then it was a pretty stupid plan, it needed to be the establishment of an ongoing system (hopefully that is what it was).

Junior recruitment/retention is the system. By the time players are in first grade (even the final year of their NYC contract) the recruitment of players is completely down to the market. There is a slight advantage to the retaining club, which means recruitment has to happen before the age of 20 to get any long term value.

Arthur's was here teaching them how to play footy since 2011. Or do you think he was just picking up witches hats?

So what was Arthur's doing two and three years ago? The fact is we had a shit squad in 2011 and good coaching stopped them getting the spoon. In 2012 and 2013 the few leaders we had were out injured most of the two years and our youngsters weren't ready for first grade. That's why we quit early in most games as well as early in both seasons. Even this year we have shown we still have the ability to shit ourselves when things go against us. They are definitely improving, as you'd expect from a young side, but if it was all down to Arthur's we would have seen it in previous years when he was here.

Or maybe he was just in charge of the witches hats.
