Didn't they say yesterday that they'd wait until the trial? Maybe they know more than we do?

He has been stood down indefinitely until the trial is compete. He has not been stood down completely, it's the force response from the bulldogs.

Poor bugger, hope he didn't do it, well really doesn't bother me if he did but hope he's innocent.

Another blight on the Bulldogs football Club.

It's a shame because there are some great people in administration there.

But the Club has been badly let down by the behaviour of their players and fans over the years.

Thurston breaks silence on the NRL betting scandal

THE NRL betting scandal has taken a dramatic twist after the Cowboys were yesterday cleared by NSW police of any wrongdoing in a purported betting plunge last year.

The development came as North Queensland captain Johnathan Thurston broke his silence on the betting allegations, insisting he had no involvement in the affair that has led to the arrest of Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy for giving false and misleading evidence to police.

"All I can comment on is myself and I know I've got nothing to worry about," Thurston said yesterday. "I'm sweet. I'm not worried at all. I'm pretty confident none of our boys are involved in any of this betting stuff."

Detectives from the NSW State Crime Command were expected to shift their attention to the Cowboys after Tandy was charged on Wednesday with providing false evidence during a police investigation into the round 24 clash between Canterbury and the Cowboys.

But superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis, the NSW police commander presiding over the NRL betting investigation, says the Cowboys have no case to answer unless fresh evidence comes to light.

The revelation will come as a relief to the Cowboys, whose players were interviewed in October as part of a NSW police investigation that has now spanned five months.

"We've already spoken to the Cowboys players and as far as I'm concerned that part of the inquiry is complete," Supt Katsogiannis told The Courier-Mail.

"Of course, there may be further information that comes forward, but at this point in time the North Queensland aspect of the investigation is complete."

Cowboys superstar Thurston has been inadvertently implicated in the scandal after it emerged his manager, Sam Ayoub, had his home raided by NSW detectives on Tuesday.

Ayoub, who also manages Tandy, has denied any illegal activity. He confirmed on Thursday he had placed a bet on a Cowboys penalty goal as the first score but said it was an option he often took when gambling on NRL games.

Thurston also maintained his innocence. He revealed he had never been contacted by NSW police, suggesting the Cowboys halfback was not among persons of interest identified in the betting sting.

"I never spoke to the police. I wasn't around [when NSW detectives flew north to interview Cowboys players] and they never asked to speak to me.

"If they have got anything on me, they can come and talk to me. They'd be wasting their time because I have nothing to hide."

Of the allegations surrounding Ayoub, Thurston said: "It doesn't faze me at all the stuff with Sam. He's my manager and I trust him."

Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said he believed no individual at the club was involved in any illicit betting activity.

NZ mum's big bet set off scam bells

By Dylan Cleaver

A pram-pushing mother who did not know how to fill in a betting slip tipped New Zealand's TAB off to one of the biggest betting scandals to hit Australasian sport.

Flags went up at the betting agency when the woman tried to place a bet in the "thousands" on North Queensland to open the scoring with a penalty during the National Rugby League match against the Bulldogs, said TAB senior bookmaker Mark Stafford.

The match, played last August, is under police investigation in Australia. The New Zealand connection has only just emerged.

The Herald has learned that on the day of the match, the woman, with her baby, entered a TAB - understood to be in South Auckland - and asked a staff member to help her place a large wager on North Queensland opening the scoring with a penalty, usually a very unlikely outcome.

Mr Stafford said bets on the first scoring play in league were normally for $100 or less, and for a try. "Anything over that you think, 'That's a bit weird'."

He said the bet, in the thousands, would have cost the TAB tens of thousands if the punter had been paid out.

The attempted bet came up as an "alarm" at head office as part of the agency's intercept system, which can be triggered by bets as small as $100.

"We get heaps of intercepts every day that amount to nothing, but this particular one, because it was such a weird option that we hold very little money on, stood out," Mr Stafford said.

The TAB restricted the woman's bet to about $50, then immediately suspended the first-scoring option on that match.

Staff made urgent calls to betting agencies in Australia and, on learning that they had been hit with similar bets, cancelled the option.

The TAB has sent its information to New South Wales police.

Several league figures are under investigation for the alleged sting, including Bulldogs prop Ryan Tandy, who was penalised for holding down a player under his posts. North Queensland opted not to kick for goal, foiling the alleged fix.

Tandy has been charged with giving false evidence to a NSW Crime Commission hearing and faces jail and a life ban from league if found guilty.

At the weekend, the International Cricket Council banned three Pakistan players for five to 10 years for their part in a spot-fixing scam in England.

But Mr Stafford said there was not even a hint of a betting irregularity during the Pakistan series that concluded in Auckland on Saturday.

"We had the magnifying glass out quite seriously on that ... You see the slightest little pimple and suspect leprosy, but we didn't even see any pimples."

Christ the people (allegedly) involved in this were dumb. "I'm going to place a gigantic bet on a ridiculously unlikely fringe betting option. No one will ever suspect a thing when I just so happen to get lucky!"

Bulldogs star Ryan Tandy pleads not guilty to NRL betting charge

RYAN Tandy has denied lying to the NSW Crime Commission regarding his involvement in an alleged betting scandal.

The Bulldogs forward was arrested last month following a probe by the racing and casino investigation unit.

The 29-year pleaded not guilty in Sydney's Downing Centre to four counts of providing misleading evidence to the Crime Commission.

The incident related to a plunge on betting in last year's Round 24 match between the Bulldogs and North Queensland Cowboys that the first score of the game would come from a penalty goal.

Two minutes into the match at Dairy Farmers Stadium, Tandy was penalised for a play on Cowboys player Grant Rovelli, but rather than opt for a penalty goal the Cowboys took a quick tap and scored a try.

Tandy's solicitor Danny Eid entered the not guilty pleas as his client sat silently in the front row of the court.

If convicted the player faces up to five years in jail.

The matter will return to court next month

True. I just hope there are not player managers or close asociates involved in these charges. Harsh timing after the season launch but it always happens like that I think
