Parra NEED a half back and a good one. Cronk fits the bill and good halfbacks dont come up often or cheap. If we have to pay overs to get him then I think we have to bite the bullet and do it. We have the pieces to put around him.
With the recent salary cap scandal in Storm its debatable whether any of those players from Melbourne are genuinely good. Other than the fact that Cronk has played alongside superior teams(Storm, QLD, Aus) his entire career theres no evidence that he's a genuinely good halfback, as someone mentioned beforehand Robson's been doing a fine job and with a team thats beneath the cap too.

I thought third party sponsorship doesn't count against the cap if the club isn't involved in the process of linking a player to a business/product/company?

I assure that myself and my fruit baskets are in no way affiliated with the Parramatta Eels.

If it is dependant upon the player being/remaining at Parramatta then it is considered an enticement and is thus counted under the cap.

He's a utility player that has been manufactured into a halfback, relying on Cameron Smith to call the shots and do the kicking most of the time. To pay overs for him would be a big risk imo.

Watching Cronk last night he is just what we need IMO.
Good kicking game, tough defence and imagine Hayne getting passes of Cronk at 2nd reciever with a bit of time on his hands, WOW!

not to mention with the game on a knife edge at 12-10 with ten to go he pulled out a 40/20 he could be a real gamebreaker for us plus mortimer and robson could learn so much from him

storm would be stupid to let cronk go over inglis. they've already lost their no 6, finch, can't afford to lose their no 7 as well. Plus, i'd rather Inglis come to us than Cronk to the Eels. ;)

regardless of whether he WANTS to come here or not, we'll be the last club Melbourne will do a favour for despite the fact that we will be paying full freight and some..

Melbourne however need to cover 200K of the caps space for Inglis to go to Brisbane.

you have to love News limited alighned clubs don't you??

no you don't, it's a blight on the game, the game will never be taken seriously by the whole of Australia until news leaves and the NRL can move forward. News is holding the game back along with the QRL.
No organistion or company etc should own holdings in more than one NRL club, it should be in the constitution. It's a joke it's allowed really.

I am not convinced he is worth all the money either. For mine, it is Cameron Smith who organises that team. Not Cronk. In my opinion, he is a very similar player to Brett Finch. Looks like a world beater when surrounded by a team of great players but is not capable of being the no.1 play maker on his own. Also, paying all this money for one player will come back to bite us in a year or two. If we do not win a premiership, it will be a big price to pay. I would be more likely to look at someone like Maloney. He has grown into a tough, skillful player & he wouldn't cost nearly as much.

On a different matter, I have been very vocal in my dissatisfaction with Daniel Mortimer but I must give credit where it is due. He had his best game in a long time on Friday night. Let's hope he keeps it up. Playing Robson at first receiver works much better.

Brett Finch is the lynchpin for Storm atm,

So what you are essentially saying is, whether they lose Inglis to the Broncos of Titans or they agree to release Cronk to us, either way they are f**ked next year since they have no brett finch?

If he came here we'd never find out if it was a big risk to be honest!

All he'd have to do is kick the ball well and pass it to Hayne with a little bit of time on his hands.

He'd be perfect IMO.

Not for more than $400k though!

Look at the state of the halfback talent pool and consider what we threw at Mortimer and what the Dogs have supposedly signed Hodkinson for.

Every quality half barring Cronk (who has extenuating circumstances) is locked up for a long time. There will be no opportunities for us to sign Prince or Thurston so if we want a top tier half we will have to splash on Cronk, even if that means $450k or more.

I can already imagine that if we miss out on Cronk and end up with Maloney (or whoever) and they end up performing like a mid-tier half (i.e punching in their weight division) we will all be pulling out hair and ruing the one that got away.

Can I just ask, how much have we supposedly offered Cronk? Does anyone in the know, know?
