We might make the GF 2 years running and people will still be screaming for another half. Poor Robbo.

I agree but if you look at our team next year. We have a great fullback, a strike centre (Tahu) and two very reliable backs (reddy and Burt). Our pack has 3 very good props, 2 very good backrower (Hindy and Benny) and a young backrower who is standing up (Horo) plus we have shak who cant play in the backrow or upfront. The biggest question mark is over our halves, who are perfroming now but they are inconsistant.

We have money to spend and it could go three ways tbh
1 Signs a big-name half/hooker or a proven half and hooker
2 A big name backline player or backrower (or two proven players - one of each)
3 players for depth in mutiple positions.

IMO if we sign cronk our chances of winning the comp vastly improves while option 2 or 3 may not actually improve our team.

We'll miss the boat if we do that. Is there any real chance that Cronk would end up to be another Adam Dykes ?

Exactly what I've been thinking for weeks, but have neglected to say anything.
I reckon there is a big chance, unless he walks into a club with a massive winning and positive culture that blitzes the season from the beginning.
Obviously, that's highly unlikely with our record, so there is a good chance that what you and I have been thinking, could become reality if he comes on board. Just watch the vultures come out then.
Cronk alone won't turn this club around. He won't be the saviour.

Cronk alone won't turn everything around but it would likely take pressure off of a player like Hayne. Seeing as we are losing players that are playmakers it makes sense that we should be chasing one to replace them. If it isn't Cronk, recruitment need to focus on the halves as a matter of importance regardless of how well Mortimer and Robson finish off the season..... and one or two front row forwards.

As for Cronk becoming another Dykes..... I doubt it very highly. While he is surrounded by some very good players at the Storm he probably plays even better when those players aren't there.

Its a very good point. Two years ago we played the storm without 8 or 9 of their origin players at parra stadium and Cronk almost single handedly pulled our pants down. From memory we won by a very narrow scoreline. We need a halfback and if we get Cronk it would be a perfect signing for the eels.

O/T

Did anyone else see the performance of Lewis Brown in a losing Warrior team today?

I really wish we had signed this guy - he would have come cheap.

(not suggesting that he is a halfback) :D

cronk's kicking game alone would vastly improve our team ... unless he has a leg amputated, he wouldn't be Adam Dykes II

Has horo re-signed? I believe he is off contract end of this year.

The thing is Horo and Mortz can't carry us when hayne doesn't fire. In the 2nd half, Hayne went quiet. Mortz took on some playmaking. We ended with 2 penalty goals.

An established playmaker will give us another option and less reliance on Hayne.

No Horo hasnt re-signed but I expect him to (cross fingers)
I think Mortz has had his best game on Friday but your right, without Hayne I dont think they would cope ATM. If we signed Cronk IMO that would change, he has a good kicking game, an under-rated passing game and IMO has taken over Prince as the 2nd best halfback in the comp.
People here don't seam to rate him but TBH I think Cronk has been Melbournes best all year, above Smith and Slater.

I get a tingling feeling he will go MIA if he ever comes to the eels. He's going to have to contend with playing in a side thats underneath the cap - something he's never done.

For me it is not about whether Cronk is good, best or crap.

My concern is whether Cronk will prove to be value for money.

Let's say we get Cronk for $400K. Let's assume he performs better than Robson, as you would expect from an Origin player. But at what point the difference justify the price tag??

I am not saying that Cronk won't be value for money. However it is also useful to consider signing Kimmorley or Orford for less money, provide Mort some mentoring and save the cap space for upgrades/signings in 2011/12.

 Daniel Mortimer for me anyway. I reckon the best is not too far away.
Tough kid..can tackle, and won't squib it...I like the boy, and the more I watch him, the more I see Uncle Louie in him, rather than Uncle Steve...

THere is a point to the Kimmorley, Orford choice as well but that's banking on the fact that Mortz will become a great halfback (which I don't see). At best, he will be a Finch. A secondary halfback not calling the shots.

Kimmorley I think could improve our team heaps just with his kicking and control allowing Hayne even more precise pick and choose entry points

However, it will be only a band aid.

Cronk, at least could be a 3-4 year'er.

Just on Ball Players. I have been watching Sutton play and he is very similar to skill to Mateo.

Sutton has now matured and plays tactically and with percentages.

I wished Mateo had grown to this role as a

1. Hayne
6. Mateo (with Maturity)

would have been the alternate attacking point.

Alas it is not to be.
