pj s post is a rare burst of sanity on a very important issue.
lets have a brief look at the history..the football club was responsible for running football matters until the late 80,s or early 90,s when it was merged with the leagues club.
prior to the merging the leagues club issued a grant to fund the footy oprerations.
now that we have a merged club the president has a dual responsibility of overseeing the liscenced club as well as the football operations.
to support him he has a general manager of the leagues club and a ceo of the football club, along with an elected board of directors who meet and decide club policy.
policy decisions are carried out by the full time employees.
any club member i believe is eligible to stand as a candidate for the board( maybe you need to be a member for 3 years) .
what has happened over the last 10 to 15 years is that groups of candidates form a ticket and campaign as a group or bloc and obtain power.
this is exactly how peter gow came to power initially when he deposed mike lyon after mike had exposed the peter reilly saga.
gow came in and helped the club out of receivership and eventually fell on his sword or scissors should we say.
one thing that i feel is very important to note when voting for a particular candidate in club elections is to assess not whether he is a good bloke but to does he or she have the business acumen and drive to guide our club to success both on and off field.
when the club elections take place i would never vote for a ticket or bloc as this gives power in a carte blanche fashion , this has been one of the clubs biggest problems in my opinion, rather i would assess each candidate and his relative merits.
my opinion for what it matters is that the current management is no where near as professional as our opposition and the manner in which a number of issues have been handled and communicated to the members leaves a lot to be desired.
the next 3 years will be crucial to the future and future success of the sharks, i hope we see some agressive competition for board seats not an old mates act between certain parties to hold power.
very interesting times ahead i feel.
