Good work Knights, without doubt the best pound for pound sport supporters in Australia, any code

I tip my hat to Newie supporters also, but I think Townsville residents would have a shot at that title. Considering Newcastle is about four times bigger the crowds up North hold up very well.

18637 at Hunter (as already posted) is pretty darn good IMO.

Maybe they should get more Monday games :p

Given the drastic drop in NQ home crowds in the last five years, you couldn't be more off the mark.

Very good crowd tonight for a Monday Night...surprised me really, didn't think they'd get much over 13-14k. Another shortened round next week:

Fri - Broncos v Cronulla - 31k
Sat - Eels v Knights - 12k
Sun - Warriors v Cowboys - 14k
Sun - Souths v Panthers - 13k
Mon - Raiders v Dragons - 8k (can't see much more than this with Raiders woeful form, Dugan out etc.)

Really looking forward to Rd 18 though, looks like there could be a few beauties with Tigers v Dogs (potentially 35k), Manly v Eels (on a Sunday arvo), Titans v Warriors (fighting for a top 8 spot)

Onto next week...

Broncos/Sharks at Suncorp - 26,200

Given the drastic drop in NQ home crowds in the last five years, you couldn't be more off the mark.

Newcastle Pop. 552000 Average crowd. approx 20000

Townsville Pop. 176000 Average crowd approx. 14500

Even a simpleton like yourself can digest figures such as these. Given this, what makes Newcastle supporters deserving of such lavish praise as being the best sporting supporters in the country? By pure numbers, Geelong kicks their arse, even when you include soccer numbers. And I'm no ozzie rules supporter.

Your antagonistic self had to take my comment as some sort of slight against Newcastle. It was far from it. In your rush, you once again, appear quite the dill.

I look forward to the day I can get to Marathon, cheer on my team and soak up the atmosphere.

As far as the drop, well do you reserve the same criticism for Newcastle after their drop in crowds a few years back to the point they were averaging just 14000 themselves?

I agree with both you (Tim and DQ) on NQ's crowds. I have been pretty disappointed at our crowds this year considering our squad and form, but the current economic climate the way it is and people just aren't prepared to spend their $$$$ it seems. You have to remember as well, it's a long way to travel for a lot of people to get to the games up here and we were given (against our wishes) a lot of home games during the wet season, if anyone has ever been up here during a wet season they will know just how uncomfortable it can be let alone the fact the roads up here are shocking and get closed at the drop of the hat. and we get very little in the way of away supporters thanks to our isolation. All the club can do is keep on trucking and try and get people to become members and get them back to the games, I know a lot of people who used to sit near me in the eastern stand that have had to travel over 1.5-2hours every home game but have had to stop coming to the games because it's too expensive when you throw in the fuel to get here, hotel, food, drinks, game ticket. I guess it's just a sign of the tough economic times we currently face.

Happy to include Geelong but you can't count home game at the mcg in their average ...

That brings there home game ave down to about 22k I would say, it would still not be as good as Townsville. Per capita supporter base

If you want to talk Newcastle and Townsville in isolation then your argument is flawed from the start.

The Knights' base stretches into the Hunter Valley and the Cowboys call on people from up to 1000 kilometres around Townsville.

As for your last question, I know the Knights had disappointing crowds recently - they went about rectifying this and now have the third highest average home crowd in the competition. The Cowboys, despite some on-field success, are yet to bump their figures up.

1000 KM's? That is further than the distance between Brisbane and Sydney!!!

Hunter Valley is only down the road from Newcastle. Compared to places like Cairns,Rocky and Mackay to Townsville.

Per capita the Cowboys crowds and better than the Knights. End of discussion.
