This is a big test for Souths fans this week.

Sunday afternoon, home stadium, most successful season since 1989. Won't get much away support due to Penrith form.. The duty lies with us to get a good crowd. I really hope it doesn't rain, If i see 20k on that screen i'd feel so proud, but i don't trust us to do it.. Surely we will draw at least 16k.

I remember we would get crowds of 11k-12k in 2003, 2004, 2005... Shouldn't happen this week

The Knights' base stretches into the Hunter Valley and the Cowboys call on people from up to 1000 kilometres around Townsville.

Even allowing for the, at a maximum, 1500 odd supporters that would travel from outside Townsville the numbers are still compelling for that city. But if that is your argument then it would indeed strengthen the case that North Queensland supporters are possibly the most devoted in the nation. Either way, you are doing nothing for the argument for Newcastle over Townsville.

Once again I'd like to reiterate my respect for the supporters of Newcastle here. But it is a fairly flimsy case based on the numbers for someone to dismiss Townsville's claim as big supporters of sport.

1500 maximum?

Fact is Newcastle are the third best-attended team, and their figures this year compared to previous years are fantastic.

The Cowboys remain disappointing given how good their crowds were a few years back.

Silly population arguments don't help anyone's cause.

I am hearing a lot of conflicting reports as to what was the crowd at this game.

Some reports are saying around 9,000.

The roosters vs manly game had an official crowd of 13,531. The telegraph ran a story today about NRL games going to the bush and quoted a crowd of 9,000 to promote this story. It was terrible journaliam and the writer has embarrassed himself. Why Rugby league writers put the game down and run make up stories is beyond me.

Well they're obviously not helping you, now you're backing away.

From what?

Knights crowds > Cowboys crowds.

The population argument is a desperate ploy to play with numbers - and can't be used as a measure for all clubs anyway.

So by your logic Brisbane residents are the biggest NRL supporters in our nation, because the Broncos have the largest crowds.

These are pretty simple concepts fella.

The Broncos are the club with the best crowds in the league, it's pretty straight forward.

Crowds in no way indicate the level of supporters a team has, you do realise there is a huge disconnect between the two?

Your confusion is now evident.

The original contention was the claim 'pound for pound the best sports supporters in the country'. A claim which I, through evidence, sought to counter.

It seems you are disputing crowd numbers on an aggregate basis, something completely unrelated to what I was discussing. It is now clear to me that you could not comprehend what was happening here so your debilitation in this regard is noted for future discussion.

debilitation?

I'd love to know what relevance your statement has in a CROWD watch thread...

This is the comment that started the discussion:
Good work Knights, without doubt the best pound for pound sport supporters in Australia, any code

It was either talking about the weight of the supporters in Newcastle. Which may just be the heaviest support group in the NRL, I have no idea.
Or it is referring to the population of Newcastle relative to their crowd numbers, in which case Desert Qlder is probably right in bringing up the Cows. Both teams do pretty well in this area though.

I'm not really sure what the drop in Cowboys crowds in the last couple of years has to do with it.

Parramatta beats both, the population of Parramatta is only 18,400 odd and with a crowd average of 15k and coming last, that's pretty impressive.

Gonna take some beating ;-)

Indeed Sydney Olympic Park has a living population of 0, so the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs would therefore have the best "pound for pound" support would they not? :sarcasm:

Ummm, you do know those two teams come from South Sydney and Canterbury Bankstown right and not Olympic Park
