Whoever made the remark about WESTS Tigers and CANTERBURY Bulldogs playing at Moore Park in Sydney's EASTERN Suburbs pretty much has it spot on.

Put that game at ANZ tonight and there's a guaranteed 24-25k. More shelter, easier to get to for most fans of the two clubs, and actually... I dunno REMOTELY IN THE AREA OF THE HOME TEAM...

19k was okay just after Origin but playing at Allianz surely is approaching failure territory for the Tigers.

They obviously got a pretty sweet deal to play at the SFS rather than ANZ so i'd hazard a guess that they worked out that even if crowds dropped off slightly they'd be ahead financially.

Average 4000 less at Allianz compared to ANZ but they've also had a few games at the SCG (80 odd thousand in 3 games) so the difference between crowds since moving is pretty neglible.

As for remotely in the area, SFS is closer to Leichhardt and the balmain area than the olympic stadium.

Ideally Souths would be playing out of SFS and Tigers at ANZ but clubs have long been in a position where survival is most important, hence what seem like odd stadium deals. Ideally with extra funding from the new TV deal they'll move back to more appropriate arrangements.

Purely from a selfish point of view i'd prefer any team at SFS than the Olympic stadium because they're the same distance apart and the SFS is a helluva lot better viewing, atmosphere wise but thats just me.

Two top Sydney Teams at the SFS on a Friday night in a headline game and less than 20000 is crap

Leichhardt Oval and Leichhardt itself are almost smack back in between the two grounds - it's about 11.5k each direction. Difference being ANZ actually goes TOWARDS the rest of the Tigers catchment, including a drive right pass HEAD OFFICE at Concord Oval.

Stadium deal at Allianz being better than ANZ? Makes little sense given how good CBY, SOU and PAR have it at ANZ...

but isnt that half the problem.. our teams operate as 'suburban' based teams.. the brand of the teams doesnt seem to travel. How many of the 75,000 at the MCG tonight come from the suburbs around Carlton and Collingwood?... with very few exceptions most Melbourne AFL teams outgrew specific geographic ties and limits .. they are statewide/nationwide brands. Why is our support base so geographically constrained by comparison?

The Brewery (150m from the stadium gates) sells full strength beer you moron.

Have you been there recently? All mid strength rubbish before big games.

On the other hand at the SFS we have Captain Cook Hotel for one of 100 pubs around the area!

I'm glad you agreed with my earlier post.

If rugby league is serious about maximising crowds then games such as the one last night should have been played at anz.

These two teams clash at ANZ in about a month or so time, giving us an indication of just how many anz could have attracted.

Last night's crowd was disappointing, but hardly surprising.

This.

Given the two teams that played last night are a couple of the big drawers amongst the Sydney based clubs it was a pretty average crowd. Regardless of where it was played.

I don't believe it is. Well with some teams anyway. I am a longtime Souths supporter who has never lived within 40 klms of Redfern. When I travel to ANZ by train from the far western suburbs their is many other Souths fans on the train also. Some even travel from the Blue Mountains if not further. Not so long ago I was talking to a group who regularly come from Lithgow for Souths games.

24k at ANZ huddled under the overhang would have looked even worse. You reap what you sow, no promotion don't expect people to turn up.

We got a better deal at the SFS financially than we did at ANZ. It is pretty simple from that point on. ANZ were only willing to step up financially if we played all games there and quite frankly that would be disgraceful if it ever occured

The crowds after Origin are statistically lower than average in Sydney. After origin 1 a sub 14k crowd at Campbelltown was one of the best Sydney crowds that round. Throw in school holidays and ski season to boot as well if you want

The crowd comparisson in a months time serves no purpose given its proximity to the finals series.

It was a slightly dissapointing crowd but as I said on another forum Wests Tigers fair weather side of the fan base were staying at home after two losses.

Either way it keeps our crowd average chugging along

One thing I forgot to add is that a fair chunk of our family supporters won't attend Bulldogs night games because of the unsavoury incidents of a few years back with a certain element of Dogs fans (2006 I think) after a game at ANZ.

Whilst the Bulldogs club has done a superb job in cleaning it up for a massive chunk of fans it was a permanent red line through the night fixtures against the Dogs

So whose decision was it to take the game to the SFS? Is there some contract that has to be fulfilled with a minimum number of games being played there etc.?
