I doubt the settlers had a very good understanding of modern city planning.
Melbournes early settlers didn't either but they were able to use common sense.
Their counterparts in the AFL are in serious shit so a big crowd tonight can only be good news.
Meh. People underestimate bandwagoners. Gold Coast are getting wins together and their crowds are getting better. When the Suns are dominating the AFL in 2-3 years they'll have plenty of bandwagoners. It's the story of every sporting club in Australia.
Not counting Soccer or Union teams. Those don't get much support even when they win.
Why? I don't think anyone could have anticipated that Sydney would eventually become almost as large as Yorkshire in terms of Land Area. The tools required for the consequent urban sprawl, the railroad and the Car, were about as fanciful as a flying car at that the time Sydney was founded. The harbour was easily much more important to the infant Sydney than flat land for quarter acre block commuter suburbs. If the settlement was at Parramatta, they would have had to have unloaded supply ships at somewhere like Cockatoo Island and send it further upstream in Rowboats. Not really efficient.
No. The Parra-Sydney road was built in the early 1800s. In 1820-1830ish it still wasn't too late to make the change and make Parra the core of the city. We were just stupid and there was no long term thinking. Something that those early governments had in common with todays decision makers in Sydney.
And your point about the citys growth not being anticipated, Melbourne wasn't settled that much later and they managed to pick the ideal place to allow for future growth.
You would rather live in Parramatta than on the harbour?
It was a bizarre piece of English logic that they gave the worst criminals harbourside addresses.
In the early days there was more harbour than people to live on it. It was hardly in demand real estate.
But that's another reason Parra should have been the inner city. More harbour for people to live.
