Forget about members, crowd averages etc.... When it comes to pulling big crowds for the big games in sydney imo - its 1. Parramatta 2. Bulldogs 3. Souths 4. Dragons 5. Tigers ..... The rest are very average

Well, I think that the crowd tonight puts to rest the myth that Souffs v Roosters is the biggest rivalry in the game.

What we have here is a cult of just over 50k people all of whom wear their magic garments to a quasi religious ritual.
You can tell this by the absolute buzz overtaking Sydney as the Swans battle for us to get the flag

Journos are lazy shits and time poor, they are not going to go to great lengths to fight for a 5min chat with a no name player, it makes it an easy choice to either write about other things like the referees or write about the swans with free access to talk to whatever players they want. The NRL have to get smarter about this and feed the beast.

Average crowd but you can be sure it will rate very well; was a decent game and Melbournians had nothing else to watch.

It is obvious that ticket prices are a tad too high: many a gap in the Cat 3s tonight and people have been going on all week how they were overpriced. Definitely 5k to 10k easts floaters in Melbourne I would suspect that would have come to this game instead if no Swans in AFL. Comparing to previous records, tonight may be 20% less people at the ground but revenue will be more than 20% higher for match. Whether that is a good thing or not is up for debate.

The nrl is gearing more for the tv viewer.... So they should revert to playing at smaller venues where atleast the grounds look full on tv. Tonites game woulda looked better at a soldout allianz - instead of relying on free junior pass holders to fill gaps on L6

True, but any extra attendee over the capacity of alliance is extra money, plus any bonus ANZ throw at them to play there. No one turned off the telly tonight because of a scattering of blue seats up one end.

52k is a great crowd, for Sydney. Sure compared to other major sports around the world it's pretty ho hum but for RL in Sydney it is a decent turn out. Everything in context.

It does suck to say. But warratahs and swans do have the advantage in Sydney of the whole state affect when they play

Idiot Melbourne journos who now live in Sydney as they couldn't get a job in Victoria will wax lyrical about how a block buster in NRL only got 5 k more than a swans p f.

But realistically swans and warratahs can attract fans from a 4 m pool

NRL spljts the 4m pool by 8 teams. And very perochial fan bases who would not just attend a neutral game. Just to help spread the gospel

Its also the cheapening of the product. Allowing free tickets to a marquee game, just to get the numbers is pretty desperate. Having only 44k capacity at allianz and 50k fans wanting tickets, then people would pay whatever the price and it would add more prestige to the product

Do think some buy two tickets deal for both games would have maybe attracted more neutrals? With the limited number of fans per club due to over saturation you have to find a way to get the neutrals to the game if you want to fill anz.

There were 40k Souths supporters there. Best atmosphere I've ever been a part of at ANZ.
