What's so "lol" about that. The A-League is exhibiting year by year growth in their crowds, it's a new competition, and already their average crowds are closing the gap with the NRL. Hate soccer all you want, but their game is growing in popularity, here. The A-League recorded average crowds of 8k in 2010/11. Last season they were 13k. Average NRL crowd growth has stagnated since 2005 at <16k showing little sign of growth in the regular season. If current trends are anything to go by, the A-League, which is essentially a b grade competition, will surpass the NRL within the next half decade. Maybe you meant 'lol' because yes that would be quite embarrassing

You're right and the easiest way to do is get rid of clubs like the roosters.

It's going up against nothing and its the start of the season champ, wake me up when they get 40,000 to every game.

Aleague know who their audience is and are developing nicely to attract them. If they kick on to the next level in general, which would be on par with NRL in terms of presence/popularity, remains to be seen. Aleague is already bigger than NRL in Melbourne, perth and Adelaide, if it can crack Sydney and Brisbane remains to be seen. It is currently ham strung by being restricted to pay tv, I doubt they will sign another similiar restrictive deal in future.

NRL seems to have an identity crisis. It constantly sanitises the game to attract the mums and families but then plays the games at totally family unfriendly times in family unfriendly environments largely. Until it figures out what it wants to be it is always going to remain stagnant.

Why in winter? They have positioned their season with min competition, pretty smart thing to do. Generally I would rank presence/popularity of the codes as: (though it does vary dramatically city by city)

1. AFL
2. NRL
3. Super15/Aleague (close to neck and neck really)
4. NBL

A League's Average Crowds

1 11,627
2 14,036 - killed off NZ Knights, average goes up
3 15,348
4 12,966
5 10,447
6 8,749 - 4 years of decline
7 10,807 - killed off NQ Fury, average goes up
8 12,658 - killed off GC United, average goes up
9 13,488

*Edit: These numbers include finals & grand finals. Last year the NRL was 16,798.

I can't wait for the Mariners & Phoenix to be axed so their crowds go up again...

For comparison kill off bottom 2 NRL teams out average is 17,647. Kill off 3 its 18,014...

The Aye League had to cut two teams because the comp could only average 8k

They should forever remain a 10 team comp if they want a decent crowd average.

Even though the A-League is relatively new, Soccer has a long history in all these cities, and in most cases (especially Melbourne) has been a bigger sport with more cultural links than Rugby League.

If anything we should be saying how well League is going against Soccer in Melbourne. With League only having a team/s in the national competition for 17 years with Soccer 40. So they have "always" been bigger, not they "already" are bigger.

Only time you see the A League crowds mentioned in the media is the Sydney Derby and Melbourne Derby, they won't mention the Perth Glory's 9k peasant crowds, the Mariners 9k peasant crowds, the Phoenix's 8k peasants crowds,Heart's 9k peasant crowds

A League would get 2k yearly crowd average with 16 teams like the NRL,David Gallop under the whip and struggling big time.
