Just saw a crawler on ABC news saying 'NRL expecting poor crowds for opening blockbusters'. Not exactly sure where they are getting their info? Maybe tiketek numbers aren't good?

Disappointing crowds for the NRL's opening round next weekend could test chief executive Dave Smith's preseason claims the game is enjoying a period of unprecedented growth.
At the season launch on Wednesday, Smith said on the back of the stunning success of the Auckland Nines and Sydney Roosters' win in the World Club Challenge the game has enjoyed one of best preseasons in recent memory.
Few would argue with that, but any momentum gained could stall somewhat in round one with total crowds set to be well down on the initial 200,000 tipped across the eight games.
Despite record membership numbers, ticket sales have been sluggish for round one.
The season opener on Thursday between premiers the Roosters and South Sydney at Sydney's Olympic Stadium looks set to attract a crowd of around 30,000.
That is well short of the 50,000 initially touted and almost half of the record 59,708 who attended the final-round minor-premiership showdown between the bitter rivals last year.
It would also be down on the 35,952 fans who witnessed Sonny Bill Williams' return to the NRL in the corresponding game last year that also kicked off the new season, the biggest crowd for a stand-alone round-one match in Sydney.
Last season's total first-round crowd figure of 158,678 was also buoyed by the 31,139 that filed into Lang Park for Brisbane's clash with Manly.
This season, Brisbane do not play at home until round two, which means 2014's total opening-round figure could be down on last year's.
In 2012, 149,888 fans came through the gates in round one.
However, any disappointment for the NRL on crowd figures could be offset by TV ratings.
Last year's Thursday and Friday night games averaged almost one million free-to-air viewers nationwide, with Williams' return game attracting record ratings in Sydney, and officials are quietly confident that can continue.
The announcement this week of a $50 million 2013 financial-year profit has Rugby League Central understandably bullish.
"The NRL has delivered its strongest financial performance on record and set out a clear strategy for the future," Smith said at the season launch.
"It's been an amazing few weeks. The best pre-season in many years. One to whet the appetite of all of our members and fans.
"The 2014 season is going to be bigger and better than ever."
But Smith this week also acknowledged crowds were down around three per cent last season and they could remain a concern for the NRL throughout 2014.

Something that interests me is contrasting the strong rate of membership growth with very stagnant overall crowds over the last 6 years or so. You'd hope for more of a link in growth between the two.

One crowd I'll be paying attention to is Wests v Dragons at ANZ. Both these teams will have ANZ as a partial home ground this year, I wonder what the crowd will be like compared to what it would be like at Leichhardt/Kogarah.

And Souths v Easts needs to have more than the 35k we got last year for round 1.

Nothing like a good old positive article from the abc before the season starts. If crowds are great next week, will they print an apology?

ABC hate league ever since they lost the sat arvo game.

Wonder if there will be a story on their site about how bad the crowd will be for unions state of origin tomorrow night?

I would say the poor ticket sales are in part due to the overwhelming reception of the 9s. There might be a bit of a low at the moment, as a result

So a pre-season tournament in Auckland 3 weeks before the season starts is the reason for average ticket sales.

Any excuse will do it seems.

Didn't seem to find any other articles on the abc website about woeful rugby union crowds, or A-league crowds, or afl preseason crowds.

Well its full of ctap anyway as I doubt any NRL figure would claim 200k for those 8 fixtures. Not that it matters I would rather have consistent strong crowds than an opening round of 25k average and the rest low

if indeed the AFL pro ABC is correct about the potential crowd for Thursday night

well......
pathetic just isn't a strong enough word
30,000 odd for this game would be shameful

it has a lot going for it least of all it will be a cracking encounter & it deserves to be played before a large crowd.
But we have the abject apathy of Sydneysiders coming to the fore again & more importantly the fans of these 2 sides
the Roosters who continually raise doubt as to wether they have any & Souths who have them , but they're rarely seen.:sarcasm:

Fingers out of dates folks & get along on Thursday
Its a blockbuster & deserving of a bit of effort from the fans of these 2 sides to get to it.
