Waratahs are hardly filling stadiums, doesn't look like much of sydney follows union.

If you don't think rugby league has been in competition with rugby union on many levels since 1908 in NSW and QLD then you are seriously deluded.

It's called the rugby divide.

The AFL has enjoyed a monopoly in Victoria since time immemorial.

The swans seem to manage to attract fans alright considering how few people care about them in Sydney
The Swans fans only have one team for the area. Roosters Rabbitohs Dragons Sea Eagles Tigers and Sharks all share the Sydney district. The population is divided between those teams. Think about it.

The other factor where afl works in places like perth because there are no other options for things to do there

There is a plethora of things to do on a fine sunny day in syds. And there are other sports you can go see on at the same time

Ie nsw cup, shute shield, or your own sport!

Lol, ignorant much?

Hahha, are you from Brisbane?

Both the coasts are extremely accessible on any given day. A huge amount of people from Brisbane make day trips to the coast.

If you live in a southern suburb - lets say Eight Mile Plains - you could travel 40minutes to Suncorp, or 40minutes to the beach.

On rare warm winter days, people will go to the beach.

I just don't know why we obsess with comparison with AFL. The comparison is irrelevant.

We always seem defensive and deluded when we start it. The truth is they draw bigger attendances to their games. So what? Why? I don't care. It'd be great to see the Souths, Dogs, etc draw an average of 50K but they don't, haven't and won't. Tough on those who DON'T go.

The active matchgoing audience for League in NSW is smaller than the active matchgoing audience for AFL in Victoria. The reality of this is both obvious and totally irrelevant at the same time. We mind our own house.

don't get this Aussie mentality. In every other country it would be an incentitive to go to whatever sport is on

That's not entirely accurate though is it, I mean there are plenty of countries with worse attendance figures than Australia, Russians for example are terrible when it comes to attendance of sporting events.
What I will say though is that in places like the canada and the Midwest and parts of the northeast people love braving the elements, its like a badge of honour to sit for 3 hours in sub zero tempretures in winnipeg, edmonton, Boston, Chicago and so on

Ok the weather is too nice to go to football

I've heard it all

Too hot too cold too windy too early too late too dry too humid too moist

I mean f**k me ,

I say we play all games at 15,000 seat stadiums

All games will look pretty full on tv

For the millions of rl fans who can't be f**ked getting off the couch

Every Sydney team should have a stadium like Northampton Saint's which is just right for both Rugby codes and 12000-16000 is about right.

How many people would there be at the beach on a day like today? A few thousand tops? Let's not forget that on a warm afternoon you have more people to draw from for a crowd anyway. You can go to the beach and head to the game after as well (I've done this myself actually).

It also applies to other places like Newcastle and Sydney and afternoon games seem to do well there.

I'm sure there is enough people on a warm afternoon to get a good crowd in Brisbane.

The AFL has one team in sydney compared to the NRL's 9

The AFL are also an incredibly niche sport in Sydney.

True. CFL teams like Edmonton and Saskatchewan draw 30K plus attendances in bone bitingly cold weather - weather we know nothing like - in stadia that are open to wind and snow.

CFL is an underrated sport in many ways.

I don't know anyone who wouldn't go because the weather is too nice!

Yeah I see what your saying but it happens a lot in places like SoCal and miami, San Diego is pretty bad as a lot of people would rather go to the beach than watch the padres or bolts

It sure is cold up there, winnipeg is the coldest CFL city, coldest football city in Nth America, I remember going to the grey cup in 91 where it was -27 degrees Celsius at half time. They finally have a new stadium in winnipeg and they're building a new stadium in Regina but they couldn't secure funding for a roof like they wanted
