Whatever the crowd for round 26, it will be our fault it wasn?t higher.

I don't think more then 7,000-8,000 Roosters fans will turn up but in saying that greedy club CEO's, poor marketing and crappy friday night scheduling will all contribute to a crowd of no more then 35,000.

oldest rivalry in the comp, 1 vs 2 should be 40k min. yet swans/Collingwood outdraw this rivalry regulary.

How many times? That's because AFL is more popular in melbourne than NRL is in Sydney (for a variety of reasons). Nothing to be ashamed of it is just a fact. More people watch it on TV and more people go to games. The NRL needs to work harder to be more popular across all ethnic, socio-economic and immigrant groups in Sydney. Then we will see AFL size crowds regularly for Sydney clashes.
We have had our hands tied behind our backs financially and strategically since 1995. Our time has now come to grow this great game beyond all measures!

Have you been to a game in sydney? Every game i have been to has had people of all colours and backgrounds. Indeed at any bulldogs or parra game it seems that ethnic minorities are the majority in the crowd

What we really need is to break into the higher income demographics who are nominally union fans if anything at all. Getting into the private schools is key to that but not sure how likely that is.

A touch embarrassing for the broncos if they are beaten by the Reds average again. We won't be breaking the 16k mark for the season average unfortunately, some hard work needed in the off season and hopefully some clear air once the whole ElephantJuice scandal blows over. Pretty sad considering where the average was after 12 rounds (then came origin!)

"...work harder to be more popular across all ethnic, socio-economic and immigrant groups in Sydney"

I think this is one of the greatest fallacies made against league. I think league covers all the bolded demographic well. I think it is more ethnically diverse than AFL. The AFL I hear basically jump on immigrant groups as they pass immigration. It is a really try hard sport while league just naturally attracts them. I suppose that's the difference between a sport that is comfortable with what it is, and the other sport, is a sport that knows it has had a century of being behind a wall indoctrinating its followers to the max and is now shit scared of the openness of today's society. Hence its clever infiltration of the media to lambast league's image at every opportunity. The latest example of this is "Essendon's 'supplement' program" as opposed to Cronulla's 'doping' allegations. Just another clever dig at league's integrity. The journos who commentate on this Essendon farce say practically nothing but "hope it's over soon" as opposed to Cronulla/NRL 'stonewalling the outcome'. For F's sake, Essendon is the one stonewalling the outcome.

The NRL would be bashed pillar to post if it 'negotiated' with one of its clubs for penalties. The AFL will eventually get away with it cos the media are virtually negated by the AFL.

Another poor night ahead, it seems. After the capitulation to the Pantsters I can say that I am surprised.

I fear Thursday week could be even worse.

I cant deal with a Thursday night game. Im fearing a sub 30k average.

The two Monday games, and a Thursday game made this season pretty shit for us.

If we win against Newcastle and results go our way, we are in with a chance, but a Thursday night game makes 30k in my eyes borderline impossible.

More people watch fumbleball on TV? Friday night football....NRL in Sydney 375,000....AFL in Melbourne 305,000 (source...TV tonight 23/08/13)

More popular across ethnic groups? You need to get out of Perth more often. Go to a Bulldogs game.

I have watched AFL games on TV and what I saw was a sea of mostly white faces, on the field and in the crowd.

The AFL crowd average is basically double the NRL average, and has been for 60 years (as far back as the crowd records for league I was consulting go). West Coast, Fremantle, and Adelaide all have a higher average attendance than the donkeys, in smaller cities and competing with cross town rivals. Fremantle are having a good season, but the other two teams have been as shit as the donkeys, when both were expected to feature in the finals.

With the obvious exception of GWS, AFL fans have a culture of going to games in numbers, and always have done. Heck, even the Suns, a plastic franchise in hostile territory, have a better home average than Canberra, Cronulla, Manly, the Cowboys, Parramatta, Saints, and the Tigers (the Tits are marginally ahead of them). That is frankly embarrassing.

Their games are also simulcast live on Fox, which takes away from the FTA ratings, but increases the overall figures. I feel we should definateley go down this path in our next broadcast rights deal, if for no other reason than I get to choose which Friday match to watch :D.

So much this. Only Polo is a more anglo-centric sport. One of our great strengths has been our ability to serve as a way of bringing many cultures together under a common love of sport. Down south it seems to be a case of "we'll play AFL the rest of you lot play soccer"

How about instead of trying to compare our crowds with the AFL, we work on just improving our own crowds on the year before, etc. AFL has larger crowds, NRL has larger TV audience. Those are the facts.

Focus on constant growth and it really doesn't matter because it would be progress. Obviously this year is down and we need to consider all reasons why this is the case - cost of games, reduction in expendable income, gameplay changes, off-field issues, etc.

Exactly. Sums the reality up nicely.

The AFL gets what they get and there is nothing we can do about it. Focus on improving our own crowds and we will be fine

With two rounds (16 games) to go we need to draw a total crowd over the next two weeks of 396,252. That's an average of 24,766 per game.

Two teams have played their full 12 homes game, Penrith and Gold Coast.

Gold Coast are continuing with their yearly decline in crowd numbers. They averaged 14.028 this season which is down 377 or 2.6 percent on last years figures. Hard to believe this club average 21,618 back in 2008. In the five seasons since the average has dropped 7,590 or a massive 35 percent. Has to be a big worry for both the club and the NRL.

Penrith had an average crowd of 10,337 this season. Which is their lowest since 1998 when they averaged 9,272. Panthers crowd have been declining since 2009 when they averaged 13,719. In the four seasons since they have dropped 3,382 or 25 percent. Just like the Titans. the Panthers poor crowd figures has to be a major worry.

This is where the clubs and the NRL need to analyse what has been going on.

Gold Coast - Could it still be a leftover effect of the off field management issues over the last couple of years? Ticket prices a notoriously large at Skilled Park, is this a real barrier to crowds and what can be done to reduce this barrier? What sort of publicity is in the Gold Coast during the season and can their profile become more public?

Penrith - Is the decline in crowds a reflection of poor on-field performances? What sort of connection does the Panthers have with the people from Penrith and what can be done to improve this connection? What's the best scheduling given they had seven sunday home games, one Monday, two friday night games and two saturday games (which most would consider a beneficial scheduling)?
