Thanks Timmah, Red Bear,

I respect, acknowledge and agree with your views, but the differences are huge.

If for example our or some of our NRL clubs did a massive membership drive, say this year, I still really can't see the clubs boosting their attendances that high.

I guess Red Bear may have hit the nail on the head, when he said "culture". I guess the same at Brisbane, when they are playing a top quality team that should go to the wire. $40,000 at the Saints match for example.

So why is it, that the culture in the 3 cities is so different. Does Sydney have so much else to offer that NRL and union etc suffers such small crowds.

This may well be an interesting project to get my teeth into when I retire. :D:D:D

AFLs membership drive was a 10-15 year thing. SOME of our clubs have been pushing memberships hard for the last 2. Dragons and Broncos probably a fair bit longer, but for the most part, not really.

Dont bother mate

Myself, and others have already solved it.

Its fan apathy....its matchday experience. Its means of getting to the stadium and comfort and stadium-welcomeness. And fan attendance culture. Humans are creatures of habbit. Your life is made up of many habbits and rituals.

If you get more pain out of attending than pleasure, you won't go. Thats why clubs need modern facilities, decent transport, etc. People need to get into the habbit, and for that to happen, big changes are needed.

Memberships is a great start.

Sorry I meant 20500 . The game in round 3 got over what the capacity is.

Not true. The new capacity after the latest round of renovations is 21,000. 20,500 was the official capacity prior to these renovations although in practical terms it was probably closer to 20,000.

Interested to see what the crowd is at WIN Jubilee this weekend. I'm predicting about 15k based on ticket sales up to now. Categories 1 & 2 are sold out but ticket sales for Category 3 seem a bit slow and there's no way of knowing how well Hill tickets are selling. Forecast is for chance of rain so that may well impact on numbers. I will of course be there.

I reckon one of the key criteria for clubs continued existence in the NRL should be to have a stadium that holds at least 20k and to be able to fill it routinely. I think if a club can't do this it doesn't deserve to exist in top level competition.

I'd be giving this to the clubs as a target over the next 3-5 years, and giving them free reign to do just about anything to get these sort of crowds, except for giving away freebies. Drop their prices, family discounts, creative membership packages, promotion including club level and active NRL promotional support, etc etc. I'm a big believer in 20k @ $15 average is better than 10k @ $30 average. Other things that would help are good public transport to and from the game, not ripping fans off at every opportunity once inside the stadium (or even the car park).

Some of the stadiums would need upgrading but then if a team wants to play in the top flight they should not flinch at doing this. If they need to raise money to do it, thats what their management and board are paid to do - lobby for govt/council support and funding, arrange funding sources and generally make the club a commercial success as well as an on field one. If the current management and board can't do the necessary, get people who can do it.

Only a few. Once they f**k off it'll be all good
Yep, my comment did sort of generalize which isn't real fair to the decent majority.
But as hard as the dogs might try, it doesn't seem as though they will ever rid themselves of the pricks that keep bringing your club down.

Those figures are quite sobering really for NRL.

All AFL clubs have higher average crowds than any NRL club except Brisbane.

Nine NRL clubs are below any Super 14 or AFL team - the tenth lowest is the Western Force.

The Waratahs draw better than any NRL club except Brisbane.

The Reds and Brumbies get better crowds than all bar 3 NRL teams (Broncos, Cowboys and Bulldogs).

its pretty easy for Union clubs to get higher crowds since the clubs are not condensed and squeased into the same city
doesn't indicate the level of popularity that's for sure

I am surprised no one has replied to your post.
Exellent idea. Couldn't be done overnight....but definitely something to aim for as you said.
