Very impressive crowd at the SCG - more than 10,000 higher than last years and higher than most Swans games.

How will the media spin this?

Nine News reporting roosters game is definitely less than 10 000, linking it to some sort of backlash due to the off field dramas this week. Shame.

9 and the Daily Telegraph must be filthy at the ratings and crowd figures for this week.

they've thrown everything at the game and it hasn't worked

they'll suddenly have a change of heart when they realise the only backlash has been against shoddy journalism from the likes of Walshaw, Wilson and Grimshaw

All the kids running onto the SCG was a great sight. And that my friends is why rugby league will never die.

Why. I'm yet to hear one good reason for this. Quite clearly people will pay to stand on a hill.
More often than not you'll find many people will buy hill tickets because they're the cheapest, not because they want to sit on the hill. On a night like Friday, it's uncomfortable and a recipe for trouble.

I sort of agree. The hill should not dominate the ground, like at Brookvale Kogarah and Shark Park (off the top of my head). I think the ideal balance for a suburban ground is 3 quarters seated, one end behind the goalposts grass hill.

There are lots of people who genuinely enjoy the hill. Kids/families mainly. But there is definitely something oddly appealing about pissing up with a bunch of mates on the hill at Leichhardt...

30k for a game between two perennial cellar dwellers. Can you imagine if either Souths or the Tigers enjoyed sustained success?

Probably somewhere along the lines of...

It was less than the Sydney VFL crowd..

It was only 70% of the Brisbane NRL crowd..

It was not even 50% of the crowd that showed up to watch an inferior game in a smaller city in Melbourne..

It was a good crowd in the scheme of things...But what do we want...

I want more...

Great day at the SCG. I've been to a fair few games this year (11 at 4 grounds), and this was one of the better ones.

We were up in the Brewongle stand today and it's a different perspective from most grandstand seating - you're probably further away from the sideline than at any other stadium, but not as high up, so you get a flatter viewing angle.

What was the view like from other parts of the stadium?

Good crowds all round today. Pity the Warriors have an appalling home record as there fans are turning up in good numbers this year but the way they are going, wont be there for much longer

Scandal can't keep crowds from NRL games
By Todd Balym
21:07 AEST Sun May 17 2009

Rugby league proved yet again that scandal cannot keep the game down.
After one of the worst weeks in the game's history, with the NRL reeling from lurid headlines and outrage over sex scandals, 144,086 football fans flocked to seven games in the heritage round.
The average attendance of 20,583 in round 10 was more than 3000 up on the average so far this year.
The support was aided by some great match ups and punctuated by a bumper crowd of 29,970 attending Sunday's nostalgic game between Wests Tigers and South Sydney at the game's spiritual home, the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The controversy and headlines weren't limited to the game's off-field problems either, with several heart-stopping games decided in the final minute and one with a crucial no-try decision that has left the game divided.
NRL chief executive David Gallop said he was pleased with the turn out by fans across Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland.
"It's obviously pleasing to see so many people going to the footy," said Gallop.
"It is a testament to the skill of our players and the closeness of the competition. The game is loved by a lot of people.
"It's been a week of drama on and off the field."
Gallop accepted the game faced "challenges" in retaining fan support in the face of bad publicity, but said he had full confidence the NRL could continue to improve crowd figures in the future as they avoid a downturn in the harsh economic climate.
"The goal is just to grow across the board every year," he said.
"A lot of people predicted doom and gloom because of the economic climate but people have turned out so far this year and I think it's because the competition is so even and fans of the teams know that their team is in with a chance every game."

AMEN!

i was there today and eventhough i don't go for either team, god it was an amazing day. wearing the heritage jerseys and seeing the boys run in front of the members stand, i almost felt like i travelled back in time. it was brilliant!

we ran onto the pitch after and stayed there until security asked us to leave it and was seriously such a great experience. all these kids running around and kicking goals. i may or may not have bent down to touch the turf and yelled THIS IS HALLOWED GROUND PEOPLE. i am such a nerd but in my defence, how many opportunities do you get to be out in the middle of the SCG?? that place is sacred.

i took heaps of photos on my iphone and we are gonna do an Errol post tomorrow about it. time to get some positive stories out there!

Don't forfet the SMH. Tribal mind (SMH TV blog) said in response to someones comment that they would be watching their Dragons fri night. "Will you be watching the rapes afterwards".

29,970 at the SCG is outstanding when you consider the Swans only got 33,000 at their "blockbuster" at ANZ. That's half what they used to get.

Listening to Raaaay this morning I heard a very nice story about a bloke who took his dad to the SCG yesterday, his dad was 70 and suffering dementia but the SCG seemed to click his memory for a day and he was vibrant and talking all afternoon, and remembered enough to know it was the first time in his life he'd had the opportunity to walk out on to the ground.

Fantastic and touching story to hear, league needs more of it.

Also heard the story of a Tigers fan who took the ashes of a deceased relative to the game yesterday and scattered them on the field.
