Bigger is 'Better'. We seemed to be singing more frequently than the Bulldog Army (over both halves). What we are lacking atm is size, but considering the Bulldog Army have been around for at least a decade and The Crusade have only just turned 4, I can't wait to see where we are 10 years from now!
lolll you rate yourself that high, you guys did not out sing us at all and you know it. We had your own fans around us say we were the loudest and best supporter group they had seen, and they wish they could have something like that. For starters, you guys might wanna get some banners/flags/streamers etc. and create a bit of colour and atmosphere

Wow really?

No way, Souths have 8,609 Season Ticket Holders, I think it will get up there

I am thinking 15,000.

But that is probably way off.

12,000...

Crowd: 9,805.

Hate to say I told you so...

Nothing to do with supporter groups d*ckhead, I said it before, it's Monday night football, the weather is sh*t and it's an out of town team. It was never going to crack 10k.

In am sure that the usual suspects will have excuses for each and every one of these games, but here are the crowds for the last two rounds in Sydney:

  • 9805
  • 7014
  • 8515
  • 15201
  • 9675
  • 10670
Only two games made it to five figures, and only one game made it close the competition average.

Against Canberra this was never gonna happen...Canberra + MNF is about the worst combination you can hope for drawing a crowd

Yep. Sydney teams have poor crowds. I am watching those crowds. Hence the post in this thread. Newcastle, for example, had a great crowd on Sunday, as I said at the time, so I clearly don't think the issue is with NSW in general. Just the apathetic Sydney public.

You disappoint me though. I thought you might try and justify the poor crowds. Then again, why defend the indefensible?

No news flash here but the Sydney team with the greatest number of supporters in the Sydney metro area would have to be.....

The Dogs

It would seem all you're interested in is some good old Sydney-bashing. You still fail to offer anything constructive. And when called on it, all you offer is quotes about how I'm hypocritical while failing to address your own shortcomings.

Can you tell me how the Sydney public is apathetic when 1.8 million people attend NRL games throughout a season?

:?

I'm also very interested in why the apathetic Brisbane public only managed to muster 8,000 people at Suncorp Stadium last year when the 'Dogs faced NQ...

So the other three came from outside Sydney? Where's the criticism leveled at them? Why not start a thread on Adelaide or Canberra's appalling attendance of NRL matches?

Liar.

I have done so on several occasions.

I agree that gradualism is the way to go. Even though I think the number of teams in Sydney can be reduced, I don't think we need a "night of the long knives" where it happens all at once.

As for extra money though I think the days of stratospheric media rights may be coming to a close. For all sports. They are not going to keep growing exponentially. News Limited's profits worldwide are in free fall. Nine and Ten are close to bust. There isn't the money there used to be in media. And the NRL, AFL, ARU, the lot of them, will become painfully aware of this over the next decade, methinks.

True, I do recognise its importance. That's why I think it is a question of balance and consideration. And that's why I think the NRL needs to plan this one out very carefully. But they do need to be pro-active, not reactive as usually happens in our sport.

To go out on a limb, I would say that the presence of Manly, Roosters, Souths and STI would seem fairly certain, provided that Manly can secure their off-field future. Brookevale, IMHO, needs to be upgraded to a boutique modern stadium. When it rains there, crowds often stay away in droves. Although everybody is attached to the idea of the hill, I think non-seated areas such as those at some English stadia (Warrington's home ground, I think, for example?) might be the way to go. Of course, all of this takes money.

Looking out the other way, Wests (well, they're half out there) are looking good as are the Bulldogs. Parramatta need to get their act together and Penrith really seems to die off with a lack of onfield success, arguably more than other teams.

This isn't meant to be my idea of which teams should stay or go necessarily. As I said yesterday, that is for the NRL to decide and their analysis should be a great deal more rigourous than mine on a forum. My gut feeling, though, is that six teams might be a good number.

I think the NRL would have to look at it first in great detail to determine the impact of losing four teams at once. Similarly, they would have to determine how many teams Brisbane could support. I am sure that Brisbane could support more than one team, and some competition wouldn't hurt the Broncos. It would be for the good of the game. Just like losing some Sydney teams would.

It is for the NRL to instigate a process to allow this to happen, and to select the appropriate clubs.
