It can be argued that the punishment did not fit the crime. The Storm's two premierships were stripped but once you've won a comp, what is the point of taking it away? Very little. Many clubs would cheat if it won them two competitions and kept them in the winners list for 4 years or so, even if the premierships were later taken away and even if they had to suffer a year when they could not make the finals.

As it was, the Storm soon won another comp, as did the Bulldogs after they cheated. The Storm shed Inglis, the Dogs didn't seem to shed anyone of note. There is a case for on-going salary cap penalties over a multi-year period for serious salary cap cheats.

Dogs actually picked up Andrew Ryan for 2003.

Gould even made mention of it in the 2003 guide with a gentle eye roll and suggested lol.

I disagree, if cheating the cap helped them build this squad they are still benefitting from their cheating and should be punished accordingly.
Bulldogs won in 2004 due to a squad they cheated to build in 2002.

If Eels are under this year then a penalty that makes it hard but possible is fair. If they're over at all this year it should be impossible and they should be forced to cut a big name as the Storm were with Inglis.

How long until someone takes the NRL to court over the salary cap to court

A club? Yeah that's not going to happen. Licence revoked on the spot. Bye bye club.

More generally. The courts are not disposed to interfering with the rules of a sport. They will most likely view the salary cap as a rule and therefore uphold it as legal.

Go ahead tho. The lawyers will gladly take your money

You asked who, and I gave an example. There have been plenty over the years that have claimed the 09 title should be theirs

I know, and the NRL also know they f**ked up that punishment because they allowed the team to be kept together. By allowing this Parra team to be kept together and play for points would also be wrong because they wouldn't have this team without cheating. I don't think Melbourne got rid of enough players either (Smith was all but at the Gold Coast until he got a better offer from Melbourne)

Shit for the fans and the current team and coaching staff if they are cap compliant this year.

Can't let it go unpunished though. Wonder whatever happened with the Broncos investigation? As someone else has mentioned, after Gee resigned it went to ground.

As always Broncos were smarter. Gave Gee the money ( as a "loan") and when the NRL came knocking it was magically repaid and he quit so he couldn't be compelled to talk to them. No Gee, no evidence, no penalty

So if the NRL take the stance that previous alleged cheating has helped assemble the current squad, and they rub them out of contention for the year, should Parra still be able to take away points from other teams (by beating them) with their illegally assembled squad ?

So speculation is 12 points and can play for points if bring this years roster under the Cap (not sure what that is about), $1 mil fine and 5 officials to be punted

Seems light compared to storms punishment but I guess being bottom whilst cheating lessons the impact?
