Daily Telecrap at their lowest - Rugby league is not a sport, it's an atrocity

See, that's funny stuff right there. But even a broken watch is right twice a day. Maybe Pottinger got lucky, had help, whatever. I was just saying that his article was Satirical and as such did not warrant such a massive and humourless reaction. I wasn't nominating him for a Pullitzer.

I'm no expert either - I would have just linked to wikipedia, but I'm too much of a noob to do that so I had to cut and paste.

Why did you sign up just to repsond to this particular thread?

Threatened by RL at all???

Of course it is. Paul Pottingham is a reknowned master of satire, an artiste, no less. His collection of works throughout the years comprise some of the finest examples of the form seen since Kurt Vonnegut, or even Aesop. This immense gift has been the primary energy behind the metoeric rise of his literary career, reaching its apex now, with the title of deputy editor of a motor vehicle classifieds section.

It reminds me of that experiment where a bunch of elitist New York Jewish "intellectuals" were given chapters of Mein Kampf, told it was satire and told it was popular amongst their peers in the artistic community.

Because they were namedropped with famous critics and writers who apparently lauded it, they were keen to praise it too in order to prove that they too had their finger on the pulse.

No. I signed up because I feel like I know very little about what is going on in League these days and I wanted to inform myself. I find that I'm losing touch with all of the new names and faces even just in the Bronco's. I used to know all the guys in the team. I even played skirmish against the 1998 (ish) bronco's like Sailor, Langer, Lazaurus, Hancock etc in a charity event to raise money for the Salvo's. I was a ring-in on the Australian Army team they played against (it wasn't pretty for the Bronco's:) ) I thought they were really nice blokes and talking to them I realised how much of that sort of community work they do that we never hear about.

I thought this would be a good place to get information, scuttlebutt etc. Nothing more. I just seem to have gotten mired in this thread. Maybe I should let it go.

EDIT - when I say "I used to know the guys in the team" - that sounds pretentious and is misleading. I meant I could watch a game and know the names, where they played and bit about them in terms of ability, form, injuries etc. Not that I used to have them over for BBQ's at my place. The Skirmish game was awesome fun, and a very lucky coincidence.

Thats just an unhelpful, inflammatory, ad hominem attack.

It's entirely accurate, inflammatory or not.

The hallmarks of a Rugby Union tirade are all there:

Air of private schoolboy superiority? tick
Belittling international presence/World Cup? tick
Implication of lower social class? tick
Criticism of non-contested ball and limited tackles? tick
Delusional rewriting of history to excuse Union's complete lack of interest in this country? tick

The only thing missing was "Play Rugby, see the world, play Rugby League, see Hull"

See that last bit is funny, if inappropriate.

I take your point re the rest, or parts of it, but that's sort of part of the satire of the piece too. I don't like it when I see that sort of arrogance in just, say, a forum post where there was no humourous or other purpose and the person is being deadly serious. It makes me cringe. Same as when I see a League fan hooking into all Rugby supporters for being rich, priveledged tosspot wankers who's game is a stupid, boring, complicated mess. They are stereotypes, but the contempt or anger or resentment behind them is saddening. There's just no reason for it.

Very ISH. How embarrassment. Let me work backwards based on the firm I was working for. Might have been earlier. 96/97 maybe. It was close

Glenn was a really nice guy. I expected him to be really intimidating, but Hancock was the scary one and watching him run over broken ground in the scrub was something else. He was FAST. Sailor was a nutter. He had about a million rounds in tubes stuck all over his vest and just fired at anything, whether he had a shot or not - constantly.

I'm a League Fan too Canard. Bronco's supporter, so are my boys. Locky and Thurston are just as big as O'Connor and the Fainga's in my house. They play Rugby for Brothers Juniors because it's down the road and its a great club (although the seniors can be a bit hard to deal with :) ), but they love Auskick on School Holidays, play Soccer at lunchtime at School and Cricket in the Summer for Toombul Juniors.

Take your box and use it for old shoes hey buddy? I never liked them and I try to make sure my kids keep an open mind too.

I am not a troll here to provoke anyone. I come in peace.

Dont take it personally mate, but I get the shits Union fans that sign on to a League forum to "defend" there game. You can see where Im coming from you assertion was "He's a fellow Union fan that is just making a joke boys, get over it" yet us League fans were all "full of vitriol and hatred"??

Yes big league fan that admitted he doesn't even know the names of his own team, but could name all of the Queensland Reds and Wallabies squads down to reserves without even using Google. Amirite?

bzzzzzzzzz

Of course it was a serious article and it was designed, as has previously been pointed out, to take the place of the "missing" player's mucking up articles that the Telegraph seemingly exists to print.

I doubt that the bloke who's name is on it actually wrote it. I mean, deputy editor of carsguide? Who'd want that on their resume?

I reckon Paul Pottinger is just a puppet, a sacrifical punching bag to cover the dirty deeds of his masters....>>that eczma-ridden hack Rothfield comes to mind.

Not at all mate. I joined GAGR forums for the same reason during the RWC. I had no idea who half these kids were running around. I mean, I'h heard of them, but I didn't know much about them.

These forums are a great way to pick up info, ask questions, work out who's who in the Zoo.

Quite the charmer aren't you Brutus? Thought you were pointing out an error so I could correct it, not trying to eviscerate me. My bad mate. Won't make the mistake of dealing with you like you're a reasonable human being again.

See, us mvngos aren't as dumb as you union boys think we are.

Don't say that. It'll shatter the bedrock on which Rugby is built and drive hundreds of Rah Rah's into the arms of psychologists everywhere with acute self esteem malfunctions.
