It's a joke of an award. The selectors decide who wins 20 minutes before the game is over so the trophy can get engraved in time for the presentation. The game goes for 80 minutes not 60.

I reckon a lot of those winners would turn around and admit they didnt play at their best and someone else deserved the medal.

Lyons admits in 87 he wasnt at his best, Kevin Ward deserved it. Even Sterling reckons Paul Taylor shouldve got the award.

Last year shouldve been Jeremy Smith.

Parras like north korea in a lot of ways
Its a shit team(atm)
If a player leaves, they are hated and cursed by the depressed inhabitants of this forum
If a player didnt really enjoy parra, same thing as above.

If a player leaves our great club they must be a merkin, like Jamie Lyon = merkin.
If a player didn't enjoy our great club, then again they must be a merkin, and once again just like Jamie Lyon = merkin.

Will see if Sandow and Tonga can get you into the top 8.

In all honesty, if we're paying Tonga $350k on the understanding that he'll make the difference in terms of the 8 or not, then we've stuffed up as bad as the Warriors did with Mateo.
[note: we're not paying Tonga $350k, but for the purpose of the illustration, that would be the same as paying Mateo $350k]

Sandow/ Roberts are the ones we should be judging - ie, halves. Sandow in the main since he's getting the pay.

He ran for the most metres for NZthis year.

Is that fat and lazy?

Thats a hard working playing style.

I missed the part where I said he was 'fat and lazy'.

I did read the part where I said he's not a "difference maker".

Simple facts, NZ won 14 games last year, lacked some 'punch' and paid close to top dog money for Mateo.
One might reasonably expect him to make their squad better - especially considering they kept the core of the squad together, and added him.

But they failed to improve over last year.

So the question is raised: is Mateo worth top dog money?
My answer = no.

Did I want him to stay at Parra?
Sure - but heck no for $350k.

everybody has been commenting about Mateo who went to the Warriors on a megabucks deal.

nobody has said boo so far on Inu who also went to the Warriors on a huge deal and has struggled to hold down a first grade spot.

win some, lose some.

I don't think Mateo would have stayed with us even if he was offered good money.

I don't think he got along with Anderson. I remember something about Anderson making racist comments.

Do you remember Mateo denying that happened as well? It's well know where that rumour came from ...

So even he admits he was unfit and lazy at Parra - so why would he have expected a big pay increase at the time?

Sure we could have used him this year. We could have used Brett f**king Finch compared to what we had. Not re-signing Mateo and Inu was still the right move.

Except he didn't.

He waited until the game was as good as over, relaxed and played with some confidence, and as soon as we got within a converted try he went back to hoping someone else would stand up.
Exactly. And that's how he was for the whole of 09 (if I remember correctly the run started when he was out injured) - he was at his best when there was no pressure or after others had done the hard work.

He was great for us at the end of 09, but others did the hard work and he came off the bench and reaped the benefits.

And he's good for the Warriors now, but if they expect him to be the guy that gets them to the Premiership, well they're mistaken. Used wisely (as Anderson did in 09) he can help win a comp, but he's not the one that will inspire it.

He's definitely not what the Eels need at the moment. We'll see what he can do for the Warriors next year, but I fear another bottom half of the 8 and then not much impact inthe finals for the Warriors.

No - I think what we're saying is:

lose some, lose some.

ie: Mateo on a megabucks deal is a "lose" too. For many reasons cited already.

If that was the case, wouldnt we be on a win some, win some situation rather than lose some lose some ?

Walker, Phatuira, Webb... none of them interfered with our recruiting/retention of other players. We actually managed to palm the lot of them after no more than one season, allowing us to recruit all the big fast bastards who are coming next year.
