what makes him any better than Zeb Taia?

More talented, well I feel as though he is. I've seen Laurie do some real good things. When he gets those stupid mistakes out of his game he should be really good. He played really well against the Broncos last year.

I don't see why he's so exciting, because he's got cool hair and he looks different?
He's got the same style as Anthony Watmough on a bad day, poor hands, grubbiness and penalties.
Honestly what makes Laurie any more exciting than Joel Clinton, both are big, run hard, give away penalties, drop the ball and have some grubbiness in their game, only difference is Clinton makes more metres and is white with normal hair

your kidding right.

Clinton runs soft - is soft and get smashed. They are totally different players - so no the hair is not the difference.

Laurie has got something to offer at an NRL level - no doubt.

Obviously coach needs to develop him.

Anyone on here old enough to remember Max Mannix at Belmore Vs St George?
There's a bit of old footage on Youtube. Laurie should have it on replay to make himself feel better...

Part of Laurie's appeal is definitely his appearance. His appearance makes him a personality player. The same way Williams' beard makes him a personality player (not to suggest he's not also a good footballer). He also plays in a rather unorthodox style. He lets it all hang out and is just as likely to pull off a big hit as he is to miss a tackle. He also knocks the ball loose fairly often in tackles - twice yesterday. Not saying he's anything more than an average player, but he's definitely atypical and plays nothing like Joel Clinton, Bryce Gibbs or any one of a number of average props in the game. It's the same way Fui Fui and Martin Lang got people excited. They weren't/aren't a great deal more effective than your average forward, but they play(ed) the game in their own way. If you can't honestly see that Laurie has a level of unpredicatability that a guy like Cinton doesn't then I'm pretty shocked.

Laurie pretty much lets it all hang out and that gets people into the way he plays. That combines with his pretty unique appearance creates a bit of a cult following.

On another note, the calls that he is a grub is a little harsh. I can't recall too many legitimate penalties for foul play and it's not like he does anything suss and slinks into the background. To my mind he just gives everything he has in straight up 1 on 1 confrontations.

i like the kid... he puts in a lot of effort... he tries his heart out.

he will get better.

if he wants any inspiration... get him on the phone to Manu Vatuvei... his game against Parra was one far worse than Laurie's.

or Darren Lockyers Kangaroo's debut... i was at that game at North Harbour Stadium in 1998... he was deadset terrible...

theve both come back a hell of a lot stronger... im sure this kid will too...

More talented?
Taia is younger than Laurie, is a more consistent footballer, alot less mistakes and penalties and alot more offloads, tries, metres, tackles, line breaks etc etc
2009 stats:
Taia
14 games
11 line breaks
4 tries
110m p/g
17 offloads

Laurie
7 games
1 line break
0 tries
75 p/g
5 offloads

Fair enough, but I wasn't here in 2007 :D

I was just saying that because he keeps bringing up the dread-locks and skin colour as the reason why he is so hyped up. Daine Laurie is a pretty talented football player, I would give him two years before he is playing SOO football.

Christ you're really expecting NSW to be scraping the bottom of the barrel in as little as two years?

All of the intensity seems to have gone out of Clinton's game. He used to run like Martin Lang at the Panthers; these days he looks like lethargic. I'd rather have Laurie

Laurie is terrible and over rated.... how he is even 'rated' is a joke.
Idris is far more hype than talent at the moment....

Taia has improved greatly since he left Parra, kid looked like he had something but always f'ed up alot in crucial situations. Shows how good Smith is with fringe players

If this bloke isn't the most overhyped, over-rated player in the comp I'll give it away. I heard people say he's:
*The new Sonny Bill
*The new Tallis
*The new Mason (before he sucked)
*A bolter for origin

The truth is he's a 24 year old journeyman with hands like feet. He's quite aggressive but gives away dumb penalties, abit like Watmough on a bad day.
Honestly if he was a white guy with normal hair he'd be just another fringe 1st grader but because he looks different people think he's a cult hero and this great player.
A bloke like Zeb Taia has just as much of an impact as Daine Laurie, but without the brain explosions, knock ons, penalties and stays on the field twice as long yet never gets mentioned, yet Laurie is in papers nearly everyweek.

i'm confused???

so is this a 'bag the big scary useless black man' thread or a 'blow smoke up my own players ass' thread?

Isn't that what you do at every chance you get?

sorry LIAM but who gives a shyte, i don't start threads to bag others and praise nevilles like taia (or cuthbo)
if you go through all my posts you'll see i think kite should've been left out of origin, i've said watmough looks like a downie

fail, try again

The same with Idris. If he was white and didn't have that hair, you really think that the media would be going on about him? Same with the wolfman. Without that beard, i doubt he would make origin.

I am not attacking these players.
