'Suspicious' fire destroys Alabama house owned by Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A witness reported seeing a car speeding away from the exclusive neighborhood where a suspicious fire gutted a mansion owned by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain, a police spokesman said Tuesday.

Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Lt. Andy Norris said the vehicle could be a clue in the fire, which occurred Monday night, but investigators had yet to determine whether the blaze was accidental or purposely set.

County detectives and investigators from the state fire marshal's office were on the scene of the fire, which destroyed a six-bedroom, five-bath brick house that was listed for sale on real estate websites at $1.5 million.

A crime dog will be used to determine whether something was used as an accelerant to start the fire, Norris said.

"Anytime you have a vacant house go up, particularly one of that value, you have to consider it suspicious," he said. "Every house in that neighborhood is probably over $1 million."

A spokesman for the Cowboys declined comment on the fire, and McClain was not immediately available for comment. The player tweeted about the fire, however: "It can't be real! To (sic) much of my 'history' in that house for it to be gone..."

McClain, a 25-year-old native of Decatur, Alabama, listed the house as his home address in a court document filed in September accusing his ex-wife of failing to give him adequate visitation time with their 3½-year-old daughter.

The house sat on 4 acres of land beside Lake Tuscaloosa about 14 miles north of Tuscaloosa, where McClain played college football at the University of Alabama. The house had a three-car garage and a boat house on the shore.

McClain is now making an NFL comeback with the Cowboys after legal scrapes that include his conviction in July on charges including resisting arrest.

It can't be real! To much of my 'history' in that house for it to be gone..

Cowboys hope to sign Jason Garrett and retain majority of staff over next three days

The Cowboys have set aside the next three days to sign head coach Jason Garrett and retain his coaching staff.

Garrett and key members of his staff are set to have their contracts expire now that the season is over. Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the club will not grant anyone permission to speak or interview with an interested club over the next three days unless it’s for a head coaching position.

“There is a three day period here where we will not grant anyone permission to talk to anyone unless it’s to become a head coach,’’ Jones said. “We’ll be trying to sign our guys.

“My priority is to sign our staff.’’

Garrett tops the priority list. Jones stated publicly in December that he thought it was in the best interest of the team for Garrett to return. Garrett has consistently deflected questions publicly about a new contract but has let it be known that he wants to return.

Offensive coordinator Bill Callahan, passing game coordinator Scott Linehan and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli are also under expiring contracts. Oakland reportedly has an interest in talking to Linehan, and Marinelli’s strong ties with Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith has led to speculation that the Bucs could have an interest in luring him away from the Cowboys.

Marinelli declined a request to talk Monday afternoon.

“I don’t want to comment on that,’’ Jones said of interest in Marinelli. “Our goal is to keep everyone together.’’

Eight teams have expressed an interest in Callahan, a source said.

Jones never comments on negotiations, but he hopes to make significant headway in these next three days in retaining this coaching staff.

“That’s certainly the goal,’’ Jones said.

A quick aside: this uncertainty has implications for the Pro Bowl. The Cowboys staff is supposed to coach one of the teams, but that commitment can be made until the contractual status of the majority of this staff is resolved.

“That has not been decided,’’ Jones said of whether this staff will coach the Pro Bowl. “They’re supposed to, but obviously with there being some uncertainty in terms of our staff, we’ve got to see how that goes.’’

The answer should come by Thursday.

“If not sooner,’’ Jones said.

As a Philly fan, i want Garrett to stay and i want Rod Marinelli to get the f**k out of Dallas and go and do his thing in Tampa with his boy Lovie.

Garrett is the empty suit to end all empty suits. The guy should have been sacked 3 times over, and his career was saved by Linehan's insistence of committing to the run game, Callahan's insistence of sticking to the run in play calling, and mostly, Rod Marinelli polishing a turd on D.

Callahan leaving would also make me happy. Also, if they keep Dez and DeMarco, their depth is going to get decimated. And we all know what happens to RBs the year after DeMarco's workload.

I think 2015 is going to be a big thud year :D

Oh how wrong you will be.

Garrett will go on and prove himself to be a very good coach. As for Linehans insistence of committing to the run game, well you need to remember that when with the Lions for 5 seasons he directed one of the most prolific passing games in the NFL. As for Callahan, while he has the title offensive coordinator in reality all he does is design the running plays. he has no control over what plays are called during a game. What he is very good at is developing offensive linemen.

Cowboys Coaching Carousel: Bill Callahan, Rod Marinelli Among Targets Of Other Teams?

Now that the Dallas Cowboys season is over, the organization must address its coaching staff. It's well-known that Jason Garrett was coaching in the last year of his contract and that once the season ended, he would essentially be a free agent. It is generally assumed by everyone, including the rest of the NFL, that Jason and Jerry Jones will come to terms on a contract that will make Garrett the Cowboys coach for a while and it will likely pay him big bucks. There is no way Jones would want to risk losing Garrett to someone else now that the team has turned a corner, thus giving Garrett some nice leverage. But in general, no one seems to be concerned with Garrett leaving. Notice the lack of his name being connected in any way with other teams' open head coaching positions.

The Cowboys assistant coaches are another matter. It has long been assumed that Bucaneers coach Lovie Smith would be interested in having Rod Marinelli back as his defensive coordinator. They tried last season but Dallas would not let Marinelli out of his contract. This time is different, Marinelli is a free agent, and we know about his famous loyalty and friendship with Smith. As good as Marinelli was for the Cowboys season, Jerry Jones should try everything in his power to keep Marinelli. But Marinelli is one of a small minority of coaches who doesn't seem like he would be swayed by a big contract. There might be nothing Dallas can do.

Another guy who is apparently sought after is Bill Callahan. Ed Werder tweets:

Jerry Jones called Jason Garrett his Coach of Year. Now Garrett and top assistants all free agents. Bill Callahan has interest from 6 teams

As frustrated as Cowboys fans were with Callahan's play-calling from a year ago, his work with the offensive line has been top-notch. The Cowboys line is now considered one of the best in the league, and that's not all just about talent. It's about coaching, too. Callahan wanted to leave after being stripped of play-calling last year, the Cowboys said no. This time, Callahan gets to decide. If some team offers him a good deal, he could definitely walk. That would be too bad for Dallas.

Then there is the case of Scott Linehan. Could he get a shot at an open head coaching position? So far, we've only heard that Oakland may want to talk to him. We'll probably find out for sure if they do over the next couple of days. He hasn't been rumored for any of the others, yet.

Jerry's got a lot of work to do (along with son Stephen).

Garrett Reportedly Close To Signing 5-Year Contract; Linehan, Marinelli Next Up?

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 4:07 PM CST

By Nick Eatman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer
@nickeatman

IRVING, Texas - In his press conference on Tuesday, Jason Garrett sounded like a guy prepared to coach the team for years to come.

And apparently, that’s about to become official.

According to multiple reports both inside and outside of Valley Ranch, Garrett is very close to signing a five-year, $30 million contract to remain the head coach of America’s Team. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday evening.

The Cowboys’ organization did announce Garrett and its coaching staff would be coaching one of the two Pro Bowl teams next week.

After signing Garrett, the Cowboys can turn their attention to both defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and passing game coordinator Scott Linehan. Both coaches are expected to remain with the Cowboys as well.

Garrett, who made about $5 million per season last year, signed a four-year contract in 2011, which expired at the end of the season. But Garrett told reporters on Tuesday his intentions were to stay with the club.

“Oh absolutely I want to be here,” Garrett said. “We’re proud of the team that we’ve assembled, the staff we’ve assembled the players we’ve brought in here. I think we’re building it the right way.”

Garrett took over for Wade Phillips in the middle of the 2010 season and went 5-3 as the interim head coach. Once he was named head coach officially, Garrett’s team went 8-8 for three straight years, missing the playoffs in the final week of the season all three years.

But after a 12-4 record in 2014 that saw the Cowboys win the NFC East and win a playoff game for the first time in five years, Garrett has the Cowboys’ arrow pointing up.

“I like to think that we’re building something. There’s no question that you do start all over again,” Garrett said. “But whatever the makeup of our team is going to be when we reassemble in the spring is going to be different than it is right now. The 2014 Dallas Cowboys are a unique entity. But I’d like to think that when we get together we’re going to have these cornerstone pieces and we’re going to have these experiences that we’ve had together that we can build on and we can benefit from.”

Source: Cowboys close to deal to secure DC Rod Marinelli

The Cowboys are close to a contract with Rod Marinelli that will ensure he remains as the team’s defensive coordinator, a source said.

The talks appear to have reached the stage where the contract could be finalized later today or tomorrow. Jason Garrett said earlier in the day that Marinelli had told him that he wanted to return.

Murray named PFWA Offensive Player of the Year

Murray, in his fourth season, led the NFL and broke Emmitt Smith’s franchise record (1,773 in 1995) for rushing yards with 1,845 on a club-record 392 carries, tied for the NFL lead with 13 touchdowns and averaged 115.3 yards per game. He had 12 100-yard rushing games to set a Cowboys record, including a NFL-record eight straight games of 100 yards or more to start a season. He was also a major factor in the Dallas passing game with career highs in receptions (57) and receiving yards (416). His 2,261 scrimmage yards led the NFL and were the most in franchise history. He rushed for a season-high 179 yards against Chicago in Week 14 and had a pair of games with two rushing TDs. He earned back-to-back NFC Offensive Player of the Month awards for September and October.

Bill Callahan eyes other openings

Offensive coordinator Bill Callahan will not re-sign with the team before his exclusivity period expires because he wants to consider potential options with other teams, according to league sources.

Sources say eight teams are prepared to interview Callahan, whose title remained offensive coordinator even after losing play-calling responsibilities to passing-game coordinator Scott Linehan.

Callahan is regarded as being one of the premier offensive line coaches in the NFL.

The Cowboys have re-signed coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli this week. The offensive assistant coaches are expected to be the next priority with Linehan at the top of the list.
