Still Nutty

Mate, he doesn't really have that anywhere. He has no family to speak of whatsoever. The closest people to him are Wayne Bennett, George Mimis and Alex McKinnon - his coach/sole father figure, his manager and his best mate.

That was my take too...I suppose I just wonder if he has had a lot of behind the scenes support from the team that, when he starts to work through this, he finds that he is more supported locally than he first realised.

With Bennett going though, regardless of how quickly he works through this, I think he'll continue to look for somewhere besides Newcastle...in reality, it is also symptomatic of the illness - thinking if you change the external factors it will 'fix' the internal factors...but it is a lot more complicated than that

As others have already said chances are he has a release clause if Bennett skips town and the damage in the hotel room is hardly at the top of horrific acts performed by League players so I doubt the whole "check into rehab and blame depression" excuse is really necessary.

Chances are the hotel room issue might have been the last straw for him and he's either been given an ultimatum or decided to get on top of this.

I know if it were me, I'd prefer to issue the statement rather than try to go through treatment in secret only for someone at the club to leak it and have it degenerate into a media circus and stake out the facility I'd be at.

The bloke is a bit of a tosser no two ways about it, but he is a human being and no more immune to depression than the rest of us. Just seems to me like an extreme length to go to in order to excuse $1,500 of damage he's already apologised for and agreed to pay for.

Pretty sure he was raised by, and is very close to his Grandmother, who lives on the Gold Coast.

Serious question,If boyd sits out the rest of the year through depression, would that mean that his value goes down? Then the donkeys could fit him in their imaginary cap and have 200 fullbacks.
The NRL have set a precedence here, trash a hotel room, claim depression, sit out a few weeks then straight back into it,maybe toddy should of claimed he has had a long battle with depression :sarcasm:.
Good luck to boyd and i wish him the best with his battle.

I'm by no means a member of the Boyd cheerleading squad but this thread has brought the merkins out of their shells in a big way.

As I predicted in the first post in this thread, Darius Boyd is now a diagnosed mentally ill individual, much like fellow player Jamal Idris. Us, as fans, can laugh & scoff at these individual's self-diagnosed cases of schizophrenia and depression, or we can locate the source of the problem.

Is there a reason Idris & Boyd have these illnesses? Of course, the root of these problems lies in their upbringing and familial relationships. Considering I am just an above-average punter, I am not to make guesses about what has transpired. However, I know one thing for sure. These 2 men need the best help and support they can get during these difficult times. However, in Darius' case, the amount of people who want to help such a polarising individual is up for much contention. Only time will tell if Darius can successfully comes back from depression, or if it consumes him completely. Hopefully he makes a comeback at a Bennett-coached Brisbane Broncos.

Boyd has always seemed like a sensitive character, wonder if its about Bennet leaving and what happened to Mckinnon?

It could be part of it but depression just happens, its hard to pinpoint one or two things as the cause. There are people who seemingly dont have any problems at all that suffer depression.

Yeah I understand that but in this circumstance it does seem to have coincided with other things going on.

In light of Boyd's diagnosis, I have formulated a squad for a potential "Mental Illness Awareness XVII". Just as some NRL stars endorsed a suicide awareness fun run the other week, perhaps a charity game full of recovered crazies would help boost knowledge and awareness of such issues amongst youth and adults alike. It is through events like these, where we celebrate recovery, that we truly give a message to youth that it is possible to come back from major setbacks like depression. People idolise these blokes, and by showing that they can bounce back, it shows us normal blokes can too. Therefore;

1. Darius Boyd
2. Scott Minto
3. Mark Gasnier
4. Paul Whaituira
5. Ben Barba
6. Preston Campbell
7. Chris Sandow
8. Willie Mason
9. Andrew Johns
10. Shane Shackleton
11. Reni Maitua
12. Cory Patterson
13. Jamal Idris

To continue along the lines you're on there Leaguelegend20, is to cement your place firmly in the LU as a complete waste of f**king space, whom no one will ever take seriously again.

You're a f**kwhit. How is what I said in any way not a valid suggestion? Name a better way of lifting the stigma of mental illness you offensive dribbler.

If you none of you missed the entire point of what I was trying to f**king say... Create a charity match celebrating RECOVERY from mental illness, thus giving hope to the rest of the NRL and society that there is life after having a mental illness.

Him and his wife also broke up recently but I believe got back together, so that may have also contributed, but it doesn't really matter. All that matters now is that he can get healthy and get the support he needs to get his life back on track.

The bolded part makes your entire ruse transparent, desperate and detestable. Much like your character.
