Rugby League is the greatest game of all, is it not????

The only game that comes a close second, is Hide The Sausage. All the rest are a distant third: about as distant as Cronulla are from breaking Saints 11 straight record!

Yet, barely has a bolt been tightened on the season's first crossbar, the Angus cross steers that will fill the cold pies at Brookie are still grazing in their paddock, and the only inflated balls are the ones on the Cougar's facebook page.

And the flood of doomsdayers are upon us like plague locusts on a husk of wheat.

I'm absolutely sick of League death riders. Yes, the game has problems, but so what? What game, or business, hasn't?

According to the press:

  • Sydney clubs will all die out by Round 4.
  • AFL is running pampant in Sydney, the Gold Coast, and the bush.
  • All players will be playing for food rationing coupons due to the GFC.
  • All players who aren't mormons have bi-polar, alcoholism, drug addiction, tendency for rape, or an IQ under 50.
  • A large town the size of Dubbo will emerge which is simply made up of players thrown out of the NRL and can't get a visa to the UK.
  • Any player not on a Centerlink health care card will joing French Union.
  • The crowd for an average NRL round can fit into Gundagai Showground
However, according to reality:

  • The League GF is the nations highest rating sports program
  • Add the three State of Origins and you have 4 of the top 5 sports programs annually in Australia
  • Four contries are in, or want to be in the NRL
  • There is a realistic push from private business or sports groups for new clubs from Gosford, Perth, western Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
  • The recent World Cup, and international league in general, is embraced by the masses.
  • League has a top level presence, through NRL clubs, in more population areas in Australia and NZ than any other sport
  • Rugby League is the reason for the survival of Pay TV in Australia
  • Rugby League players and their clubs are huge supporters of charity.
  • Rugby League crowds remain within 1% of all time highs.
  • Rugby League is the only sport in Australia that guarantees to crowds and TV ratings for domestic, interstate and international games in Australia
  • Rugby League, more than any other sport, has the proven ability to produce champion players regardless of any negative impact on the game - be it player exodus, Super League, declining juniors, of injuries.
  • Rugby League, more than any other sport, has the proven ability to provide a thrilling contest in the big stage - ESPECIALLY in the face of adversity (ie 1997 GF, 2005-6 Tri Nations, 2008 World Cup)
  • Crowds still flock to stadia and media irrespective of media efforts to denegrate the sport.
Let this thread be dedicated to the positives of the greatest game of all, which drown the negatives. Ban all whingers. Kill all conspirators. Celebrate the game!!!!!!!!!!!

I openly welcome AFL to open a team in West Sydney.

It will be like Napoleon and Hiltler trying to take Russia in the Winter.

P.S: Rugby League is the best sport ever invented in the history of the Universe. (including those undiscovered pockets,..i'll take my chances.)

More kids getting into league
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

IT'S a battle played out in schoolyards across Sydney's west every day - rival footy codes fighting for the young hearts and minds of tomorrow's sport stars.

As the AFL struggles to save face after last weekend's poor turnout at the Swans' match against North Melbourne, new figures reveal a record numbers are joining the ranks of junior rugby league in western Sydney.

Figures obtained by The Daily Telegraph reveal a 4 per cent rise in the number of club-registered players from Parramatta to Penrith.

The NRL figures show a total of 20,343 registered junior and senior players took to the field for 1497 teams in 2008, up from a total of 1298 teams in 2007.

Despite attempts from the AFL to entice youngsters, the number of junior and senior league teams has risen 15.3 per cent across Sydney's west in the years 2000-2007.

The AFL will also have to fight the rising popularity of soccer, with high numbers of juniors joining teams across western Sydney.

"Football (soccer) has the highest participation among the codes for boys aged five to 14 in the country," Football Federation Australia spokeswoman Bonita Mersiades said.

"That would apply to Sydney's west as well."

But as the codes battle to attract new youngsters on to the field, Year 6 students Angad Roy, Daniel Norden and Johnny Tzortzopoulos already had their hearts set on their favourite brands of footy, which they play with mates in the schoolyard each day. "There is a lot of rivalry in the playground," Angad, 12, said.

RL is without a doubt the greatest game in the world. It is played by fearless warriors who cast an immense bravery shadow over any other sportsman.

On the downside it is run by idiots that would struggle to run a corner shop succesfully!

I love RL because of its honesty. There is no place to hide on the field and off it the fans are (99% anyway) down to earth people who are happy to share a beer and yarn about the game regardless of the colours you wear or car you drive.

Roll on season kick off!

ps why do the media love to kick us so much? Is it because they are all old school rugger lovers, all from Melbourne or like any popular thing we are just an easy target?

But we cant deny that sydney needs to be looked at and monitored carefully..some clubs are struggling financially.
But the base is still solid..just need to get clubs in apsoition to capitalise.

Great stuff Loudy..one of your best no doubt.:D

There is nothing better than being positive and proud about the game of rugby league.

Amazing things can happen when people have this attitude.
