Been playing for about an hour or so and it's been pretty good so far. But I don't really have a basis for comparison as im new to this genre.

Getting really bad lag (~300ms). Not sure whether it's my crappy graphics card (NVidia GeForce 9300GE) or the servers being flogged. Hopefully it's the latter.

JM, a better graphics card wont make your ping any better. I think its just flooded at the moment it should drop down

Well that was fun! Had to stop or else I would have got too carried away and been too tired for work.

I like how easy it is to join a friend's game and jump into the same quests etc.

Its doing pretty good on that front actually. It had packed event centres (not 100k, but whatever the capacity is for them). But it gets 100k concurrent viewers on stream for its events, and in all aspects its growing. On top of that there have been developments that will boost it even further on top of the already present growth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adNMS1DFSBA&feature=plcp

Its hardly been a disappointment, in any regard.

I think you might be underestimating the expectations Activision had for the game. They're shooting for WoW levels of profit now, and it didn't get to the level of it's predecessor (which is making other companies very rich). I guess we're not likely to find out how they see it though.

I must admit I might be a bit biased as I thought SC2 was disappointing from a creative perspective.

What would be the point of a challenging and immersive journey when the real money auction house is only going to kick into gear at "end game"? What would be the point of monetizing the game to be a pay to win MMO if you leave people stuck in the "game"? Stop talking, back on the treadmill!

Also it's your fault if you're disappointed;

Blizzard Community Manager Bashiok has told excited fans to lower their expectations for Diablo 3.

In a post on the battle.net forums, Bashiok said:

I too worry that we won’t be able to meet the expectations people have built up for themselves. Part of my job is managing people’s expectations, so… eh… stop it. Stop thinking about how awesome this game could be. Just imagine it’s a new M. Night Shyamalan movie. Sure Sixth Sense was amazing and Unbreakable had it’s moments, but this right here is the sequel to The Village … or The Happening … or Signs … or any of the movies besides the two I first mentioned.

After Diablo 2′s tremendous success — and given a large crowd has been playing this game for a decade — it’s no surprise that expectations for Diablo 3 are stratospheric. No game could possibly live up to the expectations that some diehard fans have built up.

Bashiok concluded by telling us to lower our expectations for Diablo 3:

So just like, lower those expectations, but still definitely buy the game please, and everything will be just fine. K?

Yeah, I know. Worded my post poorly. What I meant was I was unsure whether running around as if constantly chilled was due to the high ping, or to my sub-standard video card, or both. Think I'll buy a new video card anyway. They're cheap as these days, and since D3 is the only new game I'll be playing, I don't need to shell out for the latest and greatest, just something better than what I've got.

I just have to disagree. They are two different models. They make money from WOW due to its monthly subscriptions and I believe they have a store where you can buy things like pets, items, horses or whatever ect? SC2 is a one off purchase so they are not expecting to make that kind of money in the short-term.

Its only two years old, which, believe it or not, is still short-term for SC2. SC2 is geared for the long-term, hence the two planned expansions announced before the game was even released. SCBW is more than 10 years old and was still a thriving esport in Korea, and until recent developments was still the dominant 'code' there over SC2. Its a long-term game. SC2 was geared towards bringing that mentality and sucess to western countries, growing esports, and so far its doing its job, with all signs pointing towards further growth.

It may not be as profitable as WOW now but I do think you might be a bit biased, as you said, if you are writing it off because its not there yet despite it being well on its way to achieving what it set out to do.

Made a Barbarian last night and f**k they are cool.

Got Skeleton King down and hit level 10. Made something with blacksmithing and scavenged a heap of shit.

I like having my companions and changin out their gear and skills.

No customer characterisation... I don't know if that is good or bad. I like being able to change my characters a bit (ie. WoW - face, hair, colour etc..) but I find myself swearing at the TV when it's asking me for skin vitality and shit ( ie. NBA Live 2k12).

I got a yellow scythe and it rules.

Only 6 abilities at once sucks, but it is pretty easy and quick to change them out mid fight.

only thing i don't like the you can't change the primary mouse button to fire only, it gets annoying that it moves closer sometimes when you spam as ranged

They don't need a monthly sub or micro-transactions to make the same kind of money WoW made. The game achieving SC1 levels of popularity means they'll make money from TV deals, tournament registration, subscriptions, advertising, etc. The kinds of things any sport makes it's money from.

SC2 was billed as the game that would turn the western world to esports, but Blizzards attempt at competitive gaming showed that they learned nothing from how SC1 got successful. Korea was in recession during the late 90s, the cost of a computer and broadband connection was too high for many people, so internet cafe's became hugely popular. Back in those days Blizzard were working to get their games in as many hands as possible, and SC1 had a "spawn install" which meant you could install your friends copy of the game on your computer, and play multiplayer games as long as one person had an authentic copy.

Apart from making a great game, Blizzard made it very accessible to play. So many people played it that a market for watching it jumped up. SC2 is exactly the opposite. High price, no LAN, no spawn installs, one account per-purchase, can be banned for letting other people play your acc. It's the exact opposite approach taken by the current leader in competitive gaming in the west, League of Legends. Haven't even mentioned the game play which is IMO inferior to SC1 (not to mention WC3) for a competitive spectacle.

But aside from all that, yes the game probably made them plenty of money, so can be classed as a success in one sense.
