I know it’s too late now, but did Illawarra take any better? It would of made more sense geographically.
at the time illawarra wasn’t exactly flush with cash, the dragons seemed to have a bit of a unofficial presence in the area and they shared the same colours. It seemed to be the most convenient and practical of the mergers. I don’t remember much ill will between the fan bases at the time, unlike Cronulla and St George.
The NRL/ARL had promised that if any Sydney team relocated they were safe from culling. The Bears had been toying with the CC for a while and committed to moving north. Their stadium was delayed massively due to a very wet 12 month period and then delayed again when it was realised the steel used in the construction was either the wrong grade or not tempered properly (im not a metallurgist).
The stadium up there was delayed 2-3 years and financially f**ked Norths to the point where they had to merge with their bitter enemy to at least have something survive. It was a f**king mess but the Bears were the only one committed to moving away from Sydney and got taken advantage of by Manly. Looking back, it’s GoT type shit really. Manly were not dumb and played it superbly.
North’s were literally Ned Stark and Manly the Lannister’s.
