Have you ever watch the South park episode with Eric Cartman and the Atheist alliance? Relgion or no religion nothing would change... it's like capitalist v communist, RL V AFL and Cribs V Bloods

This is just life...

At least we wouldn’t need to listen to the mentally ill quoting scripture as fact.

Trying to frame this issue as one about Religious freedom is stupid.

Though there is that element to it the real concern is freedom of speech, because if RA is allowed to simply fire somebody for an opinion that they don't like (no matter what that opinion is) then there is nothing stopping any other company from firing anybody else for an opinion they don't like.

I don't want to live in a world where a Liberal employer that doesn't like something that a Labour supporting employee (or vice versa) says can fire them for that opinion, that puts way to much power in the hands of people who should never have been afforded it!

And lets be honest for a second here, if the roles were reversed and a person that was supporting gay rights was fired by a 'Christian company' everybody that is currently condemning Folau would be absolutely livid. Well you can't have it both ways, it can't be alright for me but not for thee.

The tattoo argument is a pretty dumb one. There are good arguments to make against Folau, but this one is not it. Watching an episode of the West Wing does not make you a Biblical scholar.

The best argument would be bringing up that (if I remember correctly) nothing in the new testament actually directly addresses homosexuality or condemns it as such, and that all the stuff in the old testament was thrown out when the old covenant was replaced.

So if the old covenant, and everything in the old testament along with it, was replaced then all that homophobic stuff was thrown out as well and there's no reason to believe that god wants you to act on that scripture that condemns homosexuality, because you know, he threw it all out and told his followers to disregard it.

But I'm not a Christian (and BTW never have been) and it's a long time since I read the Bible, so I probably butchered that.

Yeah, I'm happy enough for the religious component to be removed.

It's really about what right the employer has to insist on adherence to social views/what the limit to those rights is and what right the employee has to express those views (specifically on social media)/what the limit to those rights is.

Everything else is a tangent

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Folau (as a Christian) is not obligated to live under Mosaic Law- he can eat pork, shellfish, play Rugby, wear mixed fibres and get tattoos.

If the practice of homosexuality is limited to the Mosaic Law and is not addressed in the New Testament, then I think that puts it in the same category. There's probably some debate about whether the New Testament addresses it, or not...other people may be infinitely more qualified to speak on that than me.

If I was appealing to Folau from the Bible, I'd say that Paul said in 1 Corinthians 5:12- "For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?" In other words, the church is a community of people who are aiming to follow Christ's teaching. They aren't supposed to be on the bullhorn calling out people and judging them by the same standard that they have accepted for themselves.

Of course it is. Folau has been posting scripture and other religious stuff on social media for years, and the only time anyone has taken issue is when he has attacked a vulnerable group of people that are specifically protected by law.

I believe Folau personally believes what he’s doing is right, but he’s naive and being easily led by the ultra-conservative right, such as the ACL. They see this as their big chance to codify the ability for anyone to discriminate against LGBTI+ people under the guise of protection of religious freedom, something they have been waiting for since the SSM legislation.

If that opinion is publicly broadcast and sits outside societies and the companies expectations then I would expect that they would and quite rightly so. The way you vote isn’t outside societies expectations of decent behaviour, although one nation is pushing it lol, but being racist, homophobic or sexist certainly is in this day and age, I’m not sure why you find that so hard to understand?

Probably as an example of hypocrisy in the way some Christians pick and choose which bits of the bible they will follow.

Yeah, as I mentioned above, this would be valid if Folau 'hung his hat' on passages from the Torah which mention homosexuality. I'm not saying that he does, or doesn't....I don't know.

The Instagram post that made everyone upset was a paraphrase of a NT Pauline epistle.

Lots of atheists support him too. Some have even contributed, Why would that be?

No idea why anyone would give the bloke any money for this .
At the end of the day he breached his contract and got sacked .
Simple .
Now the sook doesn’t like the rules he’d agreed to.

Bad luck Izzy .

Tough shit.

Love to know how long I get to repent.
Is it ok if I just wait until my deathbed?
Izzy would’ve rooted chicks before he was Married... probably his now wife.

Whether you accept the Bible as authoritative, or not, you need to start with a decent hermeneutic (as is the case with any book, and especially with old books) to properly discern what they say or don't say.

The argument against tattoos is case in point.

I hope he wins on free speech grounds.

Then I can tell all my clients to eat a dick and the boss can't fire me.

Beautiful.

The Liberal Party should be right behind this one.
