No. We are playing better sides. Guthersons slump I reckon is based on that. He is effective against weaker defenses. Just like many of our forwards can get a roll on and look good. But against better sides Gutherson skills don't trouble them.

I don't agree with that.

Gutherson has had some great games against top sides - running for 200m against the Roosters and outplaying Tedesco in 2020, comes to mind.

While it's true that we have been playing higher quality opposition lately, Gutherson has arguably been in poor form for well over a month - even in games we had been winning.

Good interview with BA on 100% footy, quite honest. Accepts the pressure and it’s all about winning. But has been in the same position before.

Mentioned training in the bubble has been a bit different (said it was no excuse) and they went to a new facility at runaway bay yesterday. Which allowed them to spend there whole training at one location.

couple of different opinions on BA’s future from journalists

- most suggest Bennett is not an option as is definitely going back to QLD
- Webby on 100% footy suggests BA will definitely be here next year
- Chammas on the NRL show suggests BA needs to make the preliminary final to be safe
- interestingly both from the same paper.

Additionally a few including Kenty suggest BA is doing a decent job but the eels just don’t have the roster and sitting in 4th is a coaching achievement.

So it looks like no leaks from the board again and no decisions have been made ……

That's quite interesting. Thank you for sharing.

I know our roster is not really a genuine title threat, but I would classify it as a solid 4th placed roster.

Yep, trust in Kent, Webby and Chammas as they all are included when an eels board meeting is held.

Id say like many Sydney clubs, we have lost a lot of money due to these lockdowns

Last thing on the boards mind is to sack BA, regardless what happens this year

Why sack him this year? Then pay his wage for next year plus most likely paying overs to bring another coach in (along with his own staff) its irresponsible and financial murder in these times. Might be a different scenario if covid wasn't around though??

Id say we wont fall for the trap of resigning him again, even if we do a 9 from 10 start to next year.
4 of 5 years of failed back end of year (the other year a spoon) is proof enough its time to move on. BA of all people should be the first to understand that, 9 years in the role is a more than a fair crack.

Half a game.....

Do players really dominate over both halves?

The game where Papenhuyzen scored four tries - after he scored his 4th, he was quiet.

I'd wager it's fairly unusual (but not impossible) for a player to dominate for the entire 80 minutes.

Even Thurston - who put on master-class performances against us time, and time again - generally orchestrated the Cowboys' win in the second half.

After half-time in that game against Souths, we started losing the ruck, and Gutherson was less effective.

I have considered 2019 onwards where our club has finally had a proper structure in place to support the NRL side, pre 2019 we were a basket case….

BA may not be the right coach leading us forward however in the last 3 years under a professional structure we have finished 5th, 3rd and this year no worse then 6th.

looking at Bellamy’s record at the Storm:

03 - 5th
04 - 6th
05 - 6th
07 - cheated
08 - cheated
09 - cheated
10 - last
11 - preliminary
12 - premiership

Bellamy is a brilliant coach, the best no doubt. However it took him a while additionally the cheating allowed him to get those “superstar” which a few have suggested we lack…..

even the first few years are similar to 2019-2021 Eels.

it’s a tough decision for the board to make moving forward. No simple answer

like many have said i dont see us coughing up the funds to pay out BA and pay for another coach - we've only just got the clubs financials back on track, and with now 8 weeks of closure and many more to come of the leagues club, that is no doubt operating at a loss. The money just wont be there (let alone to sign Bennett who would be on minimum $1.2m per season if not more.

I think the best we can hope for is a change in assistant coaches heading into 2022, and riding it out with BA. Unless we win 2 finals games this year, let him know 2022 is his final year so then the players making decisions on their futures have some surety too.

Everybody loves BA. Ffs we all do and would hate to lose him from our club. Regrettably he has proven with our late season fades, our limited attack and questionable defence that hes not the man to take us all the way as a head coach regardless of who is in our roster. Pi*s off Grima and shuffle BA into that role. At the very least our players need new voices. Rocking up to pre season each year must be like f'n Groundhog Day. At least Bill Murray is funny.
