Kurt,
Love your work. But surely you are not seriously suggesting that there are more "high achievers" with a league background, than with a rugby background?
No, I'm suggesting that the very highest of achievers come from a RL background.
There is something inate in our culture where excellence is continually pursued, whereas your game hasa culture of a VERY average mindset and acheivement if capped to mid-tier mediocrity.
For your John Fahey, I give you Kim Beasley (played rugby at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar),
Beasley played nuffy 2nd XV for UWA and it isn't his preferred sport, I used to live 2 blocks from him in South Perth and have met the bloke. He somewhat enjoys RL too.
but more recently, Tony Abbott (played first grade for Manly) and Joe Hockey (played for Sydney University).
Their success will be judged once the prime minister leaves, at the moment they are just mid tier pro-pellers head, just like many NSW and QLD parliamentry ministers who have first grade RL experience.
Fahey also has his own success in being premier of NSW.
Just a couple from the business world. Marius Kloppers, the CEO of the world's biggest mining company, and the biggest company in Australia (BHP-Billiton, of course), played for South Africa under 21 Springboks.
So someone to equal John Quayle then.. how quaint.
Michael Hawker, a Wallaby, is the CEO of Australia's 20th biggest company, IAG.
And David Kirk, former All Black captain, medical doctor, MBA, and Rhodes Scholar, is CEO of Australia's leading newspaper group, Fairfax Holdings.
Leading ?
Fairfax Media Ltd (FXJ) is the current name whiz, you seem far off the pace. It is also under-performing and that is why the share price Farifax has plummeted since an under-performing muppet has control of the joystick. Under performing muppets may cut it in the world of RU, but the pursuit of excellence is part of our culture.
The modern world is eliminating 'old-school ties' dopey, meritocracy is the way of the future, we have it in spades, and your lot are paying overs to try and get our wingers to show it to you.
Yes, rugby is a more international game.
Quality over quantity. We have the NRL, you have the Rugby Union world cup.
Ours may not draw the various handfuls of private school boys from various countries, but we can enjoy the fact we have the best rugby on the planet, and you can put up with our reject 2nd graders and wingers put on 90 points against japan.
2000 is a long time ago. As is 1999. What about some up-to-date data?
You lot have even got over 1895, if you had, there'd be one code of rugby with 13 men, no rucks and mauls and a play the ball.
Not many follow your lead, though, Kurt, do they?
Every person on this board is a RL fan and they are all superior to you. They are all following my lead and enjoying a fantastic finals series.
We aren't engaged in inventing superlatives of "plucky and brave" when watching amatuers score field goals when 50 points down, thus trying to impose the illusion that the piece of sht we just observed was 'enjoyable'.
We actually do enjoy our game, no one enjoys Rugby union, it's just an excuse to talk shop due to the lack of distraction on the field.
I hope you are enjoying a real World Cup.
'Enjoying' implies current tense. The real rugby world cup is 12 months away.
