Dragons chase Jarryd Hayne

I want both Hayne and Dufty.

I genuinely find it insane that some want to pull the pin on Dufty already. He had one of the better first years in first grade I think I've seen for the Red V in a long time

No shit he's not well rounded yet but I think he should remain our 1 with Hayne being a centre

Agree, I just want one more year to see how he develops. It will either be so so average based on great running but no improvement on very average defence, positioning ( himself and his calls for team mates ) under the high ball and hitups. The upside is improvement in all these areas to be one of the top 5 fullbacks in the NRL. I'd like us to be in position to make the call rather than he leave and becomes a great fullback with another club.

I doubt if the Club will sign Hayne on 600k and then play him on the wing or at centre; positions that is already highly contested. As it is we have:

Fullback - Dufty
Wingers - Pearson, Mann and Pereira
Centres - Lafai, Mann, Lomax, Aitken

In addition, if we needed to lose a player, I'd say that Dufty who still has one year left on his contract and who is on cheap coin, may not be the one to let go however, I do see him in a contest with Hayne for the custodian role and therefore spend most of his time in reserve grade in 2019.

So it seems to me that the obvious player to let go would be Aitken or Lafai as both are the least versatile when it comes to positions they can play in. Mann can play on either wing and either centre position so I feel letting him go would be a big mistake. In my opinion Lomax is our best right centre and is seen by many to have a long bright future at the Dragons. So let's have a look at my preferred selections and why:

1. Jarryd Hayne - He has had experience in performing as an elate fullback, is great in returning the ball, in general attack and in general defence/defending his line, great at creating opportunities for his team mates, taking the high ball and calling structures, threats and opportunities from the back.

I'd say Dufty should improve his game, be backup to Hayne and if he improves in defence, taking the high ball, positional play and returning the ball, he may just be a great all round fullback.

2. Pearson - The Club has placed a lot of hope in Pearson on the left flank. His speed, size and defensive capability makes him an ideal replacement for Macdonald providing he can maintain form throughout the year.

3. Lomax - Earned his place at the back end of the 2018 season. He would have to perform poorly during the off-season to lose his spot.

4. Mann - A left side outside back who in my opinion is best suited to the left centre position. I more consistent than Lafai and would be great at setting up young Pearson down the left wing.

5. Pereira - Did a good job on the left wing in 2018 and is the only recognised winger left over in the Club. I'd say that the right wing position is up for grabs in the off-season with Pereira as favourite.

So in my opinion, the likes of Dufty, Aitken and Lafai will start the season in ISP and gain selectin in first grade through form or a first grader being injured. If anything, this would be a wake up call letting players know that there is no such thing as 'a guaranteed selection in first grade. Being a contract year for all of the above 3 players, I would expect that they would be busting their guts to perform well in an effort to gain first grade selection.

The wild card could be the Dufty Manager if he fills Dufty with delusions of grandeur & $700K season for a 1 year FG experience- then we are stuffed.

Well I'm very tired of these 'one more year' stories. Dufty's attributes are there for all to see. There is no question about is attacking skills in certain circumstances and being a local junior, no question regarding the Club's desire to see him do well in the big red V. First grade is not the place to learn basic skills on the run. We need to give it our best shot each and every year to win a premiership. Let Dufty realise it is very important to put in and address his short cummings in order to hold down a spine position at SGI; especially if he sees himself as a 700k a year player.

Jeez Pos , looks like if you were running our pathways program the criteria would be : When given a chance in the NRL side perform like a seasoned veteran or your out on your arse !

I would prefer to think that extra coaches and mentors be provided to bring elite juniors like Dufty through - first grade ready. It has to be a reflection on those preparing him for first grade.

Whats more interesting for me is who is/are the player/s we would let go to accomodate Hayne.

The club is currently on a membership drive and obviously wanting current and new members to sign up for the 2019 season.

So, from a marketing perspective, you would promote the players the general public would be most excited to see.

Dufty features in just about every video. To be honest he's a marketing magnet for kids.
However, there are 2 from the backline that have not been seen.

I will let you investigate that for yourselves.

That to me is the clue to who is out of favour or likely to be used as pawns for any deal involving Hayne.

A good coach would love to work with Dufty

Meanwhile Jarryd Hayne will be 31 next year, has spent the bulk of the last 2 years playing centre or wing, doesn't have the best reputation for attitude and has a civil lawsuit for rape hanging over his head

Maybe it's time for those coaches on the gravy train to put in and earn their coin. Prior to contract, SGI management should spell out the required standards we expect. During pre-season training, Hayne should be monitored closely and helped to get in the groove of performing to his best ability. Yes and if he falls short, off to ISP he goes.

Agree to a certain extent but for me the gap between ISP and NRL is hugh.It is not like the old days of a Sydney based 1 st & Reserve grade comp where a guy killing it in reserves did really well straight away when promoted to firsts.

So if a player has an ugly mug or is not photogenic, he is in the gun to be cut to make way for Hayne. I'd say that no one needs to be cut because in my opinion, there is enough cap left to accommodate Hayne at 600k. For those players who might feel poorly done bye, this situation will not come up until round 1 of the 2019 season. So the likes of Dufty, Aitken and Lafai will be trying hard to cement a spot in first grade and will know better than any, how they are fairing by the performance in the off-season.

There could very well be a circumstance in which some of the 2019 squad received front ended payments for season 2019. If this is the case, there may be no need to lose any player who wants to stay.

Lol no

James Graham has been featured.

Its obvious to me that Mann is one of the players, the other i will leave to you.

Marketing is all about promotion of the product. You roll out the best possible reasons for anyone to buy that product, ugly or not its about what excites and intices the public.

Mann would have to be our most versatile outside back. I'd cut Aitken and Lafai ahead of Mann. Tell me is Aitken and/or Lafai in the promotion/marketing material you are speaking of. As an aside, I don't believe we need to cut any more players for financial reasons - salary cap.

The guy would prefer to play for Parra, but if they can’t pay him the money he wants he will go to the highest bidder.

French Rugby is probably his last resort.

Would only be interested if he came wholeheartedly to the fold.

We don’t want to be his meal ticket.

He has to be committed to winning a premiership.

If he is only interested in the $$, I hope he improves his French very quickly!

It's a fact of life these days that players try to do the best financially that they can. We lost a few good players over the years because we could not match the dollars of other clubs.

Given his talents and experience and considering his age, I'd say that Hayne is worth 600k per year over a two year deal. Remember, Millward offered Dugan 700k to stay.

One of the big pluses with Hayne is that he can/does direct play from the back and because of this, has a real feel for opportunities in attack and threats in defence.

I don’t want the Hayne Plane anywhere near our club. We need to spend the money on our juniors or try and recruit some younger players.
I still believe that Aitken and Lafai will be our starting centers next season. I would love to see Lomax and Lafai as the starting centers.

You may very well get all you desire even if it means it costs us another premiership.

Too late to spend an extra 600k on juniors. The window is now and we have a crap coach so we need all the help we can get. We have 11 players coming off contract in 2019 and a fullback that is one or two years away from being a complete first grade fullback.
