Dammit. This can only mean one thing. I am an ignoramus. I am one of those stupid people you are referring to. I stupidly expected a like for like replacements at worst. After losing two experienced first grade wingers, I’d hoped for better replacements or at least like for like. How stupid am I. Anyways sorry Mr Millward for being such a naysayer. My bad. I’ll crawl back into my hole, and in future be mindful of offending the intellects on this forum.

Haven’t we done that though? Essentially replaced like for like with the players we’ve bought?

Herbert – Pearson (some may even say this is a slight upgrade and providing specialist depth)

Garrick – Ravawla (haven’t seen much of Ravawla, but at a minimum would be like for like)

Sele – Timm (I suspect that this is more of a positional thing – Timm may be considered more of a prop than Sele was and so gives us more depth in a lacking position)

Ah Mau – Sims (I’m not sure about this swap as I was a LAM fan, but I am excited to see what Sims can bring to the table)

So then we have 2 spare positions to fill with, more than likely, at least 1 good back (as has been highlighted by recruitment).

Nighty might be hard to replace as, if reports are true, he took a pay cut to stay this year. So his salary alone won’t be enough to fund a like for like replacement as well as purchasing another quality back.

Like I said, will be interesting to see who we end up with. And we have until June to finalise the team.

Since the Storm were stripped of the 2009 title there have been 9 premierships decided.
7 different clubs have won premierships with the only multiple winners being Storm & Roosters 2 each.
So in fact it is not just about 2 or 3 clubs only it is about positioning your club to take the best opportunities as premiership windows appear and that is what we now fail to do.
The only time we did it was 2009 when we got Bennett, won in 2010 and then we f**ked up 2011 and have been like the lost tribe of Israel wandering around the desert with Moses ever since.
People making excuses we can’t compete with the top clubs because of this and that and miss the point that we can compete and should be and for all the people that think I’m negative they fail to see how positive I really am because I actually believe we can do it and I get annoyed that we don’t and get pissed off when IMO lame excuses are offered up.

You are right - we do only have a limited window to win the comp - as do a majority of teams. However there are 2 or 3 teams that position themselves to win the comp year after year - their window is permanently open. How? Through superior financial positioning. And that is what we can't compete with. I don't think that is a lame excuse, I think that is an irrefutable fact. And I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think the WIN buyout will change that position.

So given the details in my previous post, how do you suggest we compete with clubs who have this financial advantage? Would you suggest we try to cheat the cap to gain a leg up?

CANTERBURY will look at the possibility of bringing Jarryd Hayne to the Bulldogs after prominent members of the football club asked officials to investigate the merits of a move for the out-of-contract star.

The Daily Telegraph has been told Canterbury are interested in what the deal would cost and whether the club had room inside its depleted salary cap for a crack at Hayne, whose odds of staying at Parramatta next season are lengthening by the day.

Some board members believe Hayne would be an astute buy but only if he came at the right price.

There have been suggestions Hayne would be seeking between $700,000 and $800,000 for next season.

Canterbury would not be prepared to outlay that amount but are keen to discover how they could lure Hayne to Belmore.

Some Bulldogs board members have made it clear they are not interfering with recruitment but are simply determining whether Hayne would be a financial option.

Hayne, the Dally M Medallist just four years ago, has attracted strong interest from French rugby union but has told friends his preference would be to remain in Sydney.

And it is known Hayne would be keen to play for Canterbury.

The Bulldogs have faced tremendous salary cap pressure and will need to do the sums to weigh up whether they could afford the former San Francisco 49er.

Hayne would be an ideal pick up for a club which has two star outside backs — twins Brett and Josh Morris — for next season.

Most of Canterbury’s recruitment and retention will go through Chris Anderson, the legendary former Bulldogs premiership-winning coach and winger.

St George Illawarra have also reignited interest in Hayne, although Dragons director of rugby league pathways Ian Millward was not returning calls last night.

Saints have lost some backline depth through veteran winger Jason Nightingale’s retirement and Nene McDonald’s shift to North Queensland.

Hayne may still remain at Parramatta should the club free up some salary cap space by offloading Michael Jennings to Newcastle.

Jennings has one year left on his Eels deal and is looking for a longer-term contract. But the Knights are likely to want to move on another outside back, potentially Nathan Ross, to accommodate any move for Jennings.

Hayne is still on the look for a new club. AAP Image/Brendan Esposito.
Just last week, Hayne said: “I’m going to have to (look for another club) because I don’t have a job. In four days, my contract is over. It’s a bit of a lottery (where I will be in 2019).

“I’m on the market, looking for a job. I’ve got to pay the bills.”

Hayne could be seen as a replacement for Dragons fullback Matt Dufty, whose future at the club remains uncertain.

Another centre option for Canterbury would be former Cronulla three-quarter Jesse Ramien, who has signed with Newcastle. The Bulldogs may try to have Ramien included in any deal to allow unsettled forward David Klemmer to sign with the Knights, although it’s unlikely Newcastle would want to part with their new Sharks recruit.

Hayne or Hornby to guide Dufty. How much is Hornby on?
2 for 1 deal and the opposition next year, instead of the game plan of containing our forwards. May also include our BACKS, Dufty, Hayne, Lomax, Pereira and Pearson.

No I don’t suggest we cheat at anything.
I do suggest we employ the correct staff that give us the best chance to sell our brand
Am I given to understand that you and others believe our brand is not marketable?
All I keep gearing is we can’t and if that is correct then we may as well all burn our jerseys and follow a different sport

I wasn't trying to run down NZ and how they bring through union players, I was merely trying to say that there are a lot of players who could succeed but never manage to crack it as a junior and thats the end of their careers.

I have seen any number of junior rep players who dont make it and come back to play A grade. The interesting thing is that there are established A graders who are the top players. Those players coming back are good players and at the top of the A grade tree but they often are not the best players. In short there is talent that does not get picked up when they are young and then is lost to the professional game even though they are capable of going further.
Never suggested you did Carlton. I respect you and your opinions. Always keep an open mind though. We could do with a couple of cross coders from the ditch.

I agree. The reason I brought up the Kiwi side of things is because I am one. Kids over there start playing Union at pre-school. League is popular but is in a minority in comparison. You are correct the pathways to League are complicated. In NZ, the scouts travel the country and pick the young blokes who show promise in local games and improve them. One difference was when a young Jonah Lomu was poached from League to Union via a scholarship. Should bring to mind the young AB Damian McKenzie who plays both FB and five-eight. Same age as Dufty and smaller. Fearless little bugger. I'm not here to big note my mother country, but they're getting something right over there with recruitment of Union players. Might be time for scouts to start watching regional Australian NRL school teams. The talent is there, but they don't necessarily have the ability to go through the pathways that you've spoken of. Perhaps the longest soliloquy I've written on this forum. Xx
I could share a story regarding the NRL / Fiji Rugby League pathways with big Petro involved who is a great fella with a passion to grow the game here and giving Fijian kids with some sort of potential opportunites over here and requests to CRL clubs for assistance.
It will explain a small part of where rugby league heirarchy admin loyalties lie monetary wise and the affect to grass root clubs financially and then local players vying to play for their town / region.
BLM01 I dont always agree with your position but on this I couldn't agree more. League used to be the centre of life in many country towns, which was gold, but now its becoming a thing of the past. I have a small connection with group 7 and see the effort they are putting in. The trouble is the NRL couldn't give a sh*t and I can also see players in this comp that were overlooked as juniors and yet could have progressed if given the chance. This is one of the reasons I'm down on "juniors", they are the the anointed ones and I don't have a lot of sympathy for them. I have a lot of time for the guys that could have made it but have not managed to hook into the system early enough to have a future but love the game and still play. Its about time the NRL woke up and understood that these are actually the bedrock of the game.
All valid points...I am involved now in Group 6 so neighbours but live down near Wollongong and aware of a few Group 7 clubs and their people. These NRL clubs and talent scouts and in some part player managers who I have met are happy to take these kids and young men away in their late teens - 19 & 20, put them into their systems, giving them hope only for some to be treated like dirt and what happens they become disenchanted with the sport. In the meanrtime not 1 cent goes to the CRL club (who are made up of volunteers doing it for love part time) that brings them through or who they poach off, unless they make 1st grade debut, and only then where 5K goes to their junior club.
Anyway you got to love the sport and love being involved which I done for 40 years now as a junior to grumpy old whingeing committee person trying to save the sport

Nope, you're one of least ignorant on this forum. Cheers from one of your female fans.

Our friend is looking decidedly desperate.

If he signs a contract at $400-$500k he would be a useful pickup.

Am sure he hasn't played behind a forward pack like ours recently.

Sign him as a centre and backup fullback.

Expect other clubs to start sniffing around if he reduces his salary demands to an amount commensurate with Hayne 2018. He needs to understand he is no longer Hayne 2009.

I give up, I'm going to watch Gold Rush. More entertaining than the shit going on here. And then off to work. Yay.

I never thought of it like that. I can see from those comparisons that we have essentially replaced development players with the like. We’ve yet to replace Macdonald. It could be possible that I’m a tad impatient. I’m blaming the off season. I’m struggling. If only there was an off season anonymous meeting I could attend.

Timm looks like a lump of a lad. Reminds me abit of a Lawrie.
We are retaining heaps of juniors

Im looking forward to seeing more of Lomax
I think Simms will be a good fit
I’m looking forward to seeing more of Perriera
The sun will rise in the morning. It’s not all doom and gloom.

It's marketable, but in a market where 10 or so other teams are competing for limited resources, history doesn't count for much. I don't think it's as easy as you make out - and you aren't really offering any real solutions up. Much like you keep hearing "we can't", I keep hearing "we can" with no substance.

In order to place ourselves in a much better financial position, would you consider moving the team?

Yeah it's a tough wait. Especially when you consider it's only just on November!!! At least another 4 or so months to go!!!

Look, I'm hoping we sign someone of quality as well, but I don't want to rush it - and I think Hayne could be a rushed decision. Problem is, we don't have that many options to choose from.

Broncos, Storm and Cowboys are 1 team towns. It’s not realistic to compete with these teams as they don’t have to share marketing $$ with 8 others teams in a single city like us. Each have been investigated and suspected of cheating the cap as well as True Believer says.

Roosters and Souths are Sydney clubs but have won comps via rich benefactors (Politis and Crowe).

Cronulla are in the same boat as us but have also been suspected of cheating the cap and were guilty of doping.

Do you see a theme here? It’s not like these teams are employing astute marketing strategies to win premierships. Some teams will always have a natural advantage over us due to geography, whilst others have had to bend or break the rules to get an advantage. Even shit teams like Parra and Manly resort to cheating.

I could go on but True Believer summarises it nicely in his previous posts. I for one am glad I support a club who don’t feel the need to cheat or break the rules.
