Dragons chase Jarryd Hayne

I was a no for Jarryd Hayne because I thought his best years are well behind him.

He has definitely lost some speed over the past couple of years. He was blisteringly quick around late teens and early twenties and that was a huge asset for him. He looked average with the Titans / early return to Eels, but in fairness picked up and scoring a try a game last part of last season. He has had some serious ankle injuries which may have blunted him at Titans and Eels.

Right now I would hate to lose Matt Dufty at fullback for Jarrod. I am not suggesting Matt is a superstar etc but has X factor and genuine high end speed, both acceleration and sustained. Matt is not a $700k a season player but I would upgrade pay to say $450k for two season post 2019.

If the Dragons are signing Jarryd for one season only at $ 500k tops to play wing and move to centre, fullback if required to cover for injury, then I’m not ecstatic but it might work. In particular if he recaptures more of his genuine dash and elusiveness then we would have a very slick backline.
I remember when we signed Steve Rodgers in 83 for 2 years, I think he was 28, he went alright but nowhere near as good as he was in his early twenties. We could have signed him when he was 17 but told him to come back in a years time, I reckon if we would have got him then we would have a couple more premierships to our record. His father was a big Saints fan.

Im sorry but someone has to expose Samy, he quite clearly said a few weeks back that Hayne will NOT be coming and now that there are rumours he is coming he's back tracking and saying Hayne might be coming??? he never has any information to back up his 'Rumours', and if he did have information then why wouldn't he just say who is coming/who is being targeted??? so fishy.
I think you are mixing Samy up with "The Calmist One" who kept saying no one is coming and his old mate told him No Hayne.

Hayne at FB and Dufty can settle back in ISP and be cover for injuries.
He might come back stronger in a couple of years.
By the end of 2020 season, we may have some other younger options like Marsters competing for Hayne's spot.

Hayne
Pearson
Lomax
Lafai
Mann

Pereira would also be good cover for injuries.
Hope we keep Field, I feel he could develop into a good 5/8.....not a FB.
Aitken to prove he can defend and pass before he is back in 1st grade.

If Hayne signs then the backline will look something like this:

FB - Dufty - 179cm and 83kg
LW - Pearson - 184cm and 95kg
RW - Hayne - 190cm and 102kg
LC - Lafai - 184cm and 98kg
RC - Lomax - 190cm and 94kg

I've highlighted the left side mainly for the height factor. I would expect teams to bomb us on that side continuously. It seem to be ok with Periera there but he's even shorter than both Pearson and Lafai.

The balance on the right looks ok to me. Both Hayne and Lomax at 190cm. It's been pointed out that Aitken is only 182cm and is terrible under the high ball.

Hayne on the wing allows to him to drop back and assist Dufty under the high balls.

The mix of Lafai feeding the speedster Pearson appeals to me, and especially when Leilua comes on with his offloads. Same as the combo of Hayne and Lomax adds more value than Aitken could provide to either as both of them can offload and look for support play.

This would also allow Dufty to stay at fullback and hopefully gain more confidence and learn something from Hayne.

Hayne for 2 years also would fit in nicely with the emergence of Saab (hopefully) at that time.

If we sign Hayne and play him centre, like I would. If he hits form, he could be one of the best centres in the game. It could turn out to be a very astute buy, or it could turn out to be a disaster.

From what someone said on JA, I am wondering if we are actually shopping Dufty around and plan to play Hayne at fullback.

Plenty of water to pass under the bridge once the Hayne Plane meets McJetski. Basil (Faulty) Millward will insist that Hayne be on wingers money not fullback coin. It will either be a cheap deal cause the plane is grounded or some other club will swoop at the last minute with some extra $$

For starters..in contract negotiations things change all the time... I also heard Hayne was asking too much a few weeks ago...Haven't heard anything else since...how about instead of shooting the messenger you contribute something positive to the forum.

Samy has passed on plenty of good info and is highly regarded here.

P.S Samy is also recovering from post op surgery...maybe have a think about that. Hope all is going well Samy.

I’m now on the Hayne bus - a 2 year deal would pan out perfectly for him and in time to have our juniors sorted out. He needs to be fit mentally and physically- could be a great buy with some risk but I think it’s worth taking the punt.

I agree
He is a big game player - and if we want to win the big games we need the Hayne plane

As much as i've expressed my genuine hatred of Hayne on this forum, and it would make me feel slightly sick seeing him in a Red V jersey, there is strong potential here for him behind a good forward pack and decent halves, of which we have. Especially on a 1 year deal where he'd be playing for a contract next year.

He was getting nothing from his Parra teammates and still standing out for them this year... He provides so much backline versatility too. Still very confident on his best position being centre for us however, we shouldn't be pulling the pin on Dufty just yet. It wasn't very long ago when a lot of people in this place were saying to sign Dufty up for life.

I want both Hayne and Dufty.

I genuinely find it insane that some want to pull the pin on Dufty already. He had one of the better first years in first grade I think I've seen for the Red V in a long time

No shit he's not well rounded yet but I think he should remain our 1 with Hayne being a centre
