Dragons considering dropping “Illawarra” from their name

@Gareth67, I was just having another go at @Black Panther for being a pork chop last night.

He’s insane!

Here’s our local Penrith player catchment a few weeks ago;

I was trying to pick up a beautiful Samoan lady rioter but came home empty handed.

A couple of flares, blocked traffic, banging on cars, shrieks and howling, police in hiding.. it was a good night.

West is best lol.

I can see that. But the reality is that the Steelers were gone if the JV didn’t happen. After one year they could no longer afford to fund the stand alone Reggie’s and 21s teams, and basically never funded any dollars into the JV (one year they may contributed a token amt). Hence borrowing $6m from Saints which they paid back using WIN Corp funds after issues because SG applied a minimal - non commercial - int rate to the loan.
It was a strange deal, that's for sure.

At the time Optus as a sponsor were losing out to Telstra and the Steelers were reliant on Optus money. Plus other sponsors were ditching them. It was all part of the war over broadcasting rights and basically control of the game as the dust had yet to fully settle after Super League. The Steelers were finished and would not last another season.

The new NRL - now cashed up - threw down an offer to any clubs that wanted have a joint venture or merge. Plenty of $$$ on offer, double the salary cap for a limited period... and St George were on the phone.

I still think they could have got a better deal and kept the St George name unencumbered. I sometimes wonder if certain individuals were more than a little blinded by the windfall of NRL $$$ coming their way.

Do you have a Samoan sister professor?!

Yes folks there's a change in the wind, my secret sauce tells me there'll be a media release very soon to coincide with an announcement of the signing of little Deano Young on a 20 or possibly 30 year contract as head coach of all 3 grades. Not only will we drop "Illawarra" from our name but also "George" and go for a name that really reflects the true nature of our illustrious club - we will become the St Albert's Young Dragons. The Red V will be inverted to form a Red A and our logo will be a bust of our new President For Life, Craig Albert Young. A spokesperson noted " Of the 37 people who managed to login to complete our online survey 97% were suspected West Tigers supporters and ignored".

No not really, I just want to see our club move forward and not be stuck in the past.
Was anyone upset when Eastern Suburbs became the Sydney Roosters…..same jersey, same emblem and now stronger than ever.
We need something as we are a club wallowing in mediocrity with split grounds, split board and shit players that split from previous bottom dweller clubs.
I’d rather a change than sink!
Easts never got there premierships taken off them

With enough funding and interest, I’m sure the Steelers could re-emerge as stand alone.

If Souths and the Roosters can manage massive memberships and/or sponsorships, I’m sure the Saints could also stand alone.

It’s really about getting the right people together to make it happen.

Identify the vested interests.

Yeh right. As if the stand alone would happen for both clubs again except in NSW Cup..thats it!
St George dont even have a standalone NSW Cup team
The Bulldogs have 2 teams as feeders in reggies

Illawarra Junior Leagues Club strikes the right note for me!

The right people, properly resourced and firm belief can make it happen.

And a lot more besides.

Despite best efforts, they couldn’t kill off other clubs for example.

Lots of things have come and gone and then made comebacks as peoples beliefs change.

I think the game needs more people to buy into it through democratic processes. The number of die hard fans that attend almost every game is diminishing isn’t it? The small amount of folk making a killing from the game, need to give more back to the rank and file.

If your club does make the finals etc and you are a paid up club member, the nrl from its hefty profits, should offer you a financial or other reward. Give the harder core some skin the game as a thanks.

Just an idea.

Whatever happened to Arncliffe Scots and the other local teams that once provided new recruits to the Dragons ?
They are still around. I played for Scots in 91 when we were struggling to field a A grade side. Some days we had 12 players and were beaten 50+ 0 etc
Scots just provided a SG Ball promoted to Jersey Flegg player at the Dragons in 2022 in Nick Tsougranis who plays backrow
