Dragons considering dropping “Illawarra” from their name

The current St George Illawarra name was born from the original 50/50 joint venture.

Since the WIN Corporation purchase of the Illawarra Steelers' stake is it still a JV?

It can be viewed as a private company taking a share of the current NRL license, similar to other clubs (private owners).

While I'm not fussed with the current name, it does have an inherent divisiveness by referencing the original partners.

There could be a line of thought that after all this time we should start considering ourselves one single entity and put all the JV discussion behind us.

We are the Dragons.

Always refer to them as Saints anyway. So does everyone I know!

Mind you I still call teams Manly Easts ; Balmain vs Canterbury , Cronulla vs Souths…etc. Never gone with the emblem only names. (But the Dragons and possibly Tigers best anyway.)

I think it would be an excellent idea to take both of the “wests” and “ tigers” out of the Wests Tigers.

Given that Illawarra is no longer a financial partner , St George Dragons works for me. Everyone identifies the club with the great Saints history, why not make it official? I have no problem with them playing out of Wollongong. The fact is if we revert back to St George, then 15 premierships suddenly reappear, this is the most important aspect . Can't stand Cronulla supporters boasting they have won as many premierships as us, which unfortunately, as St George Illawarra , is true, reinstate our name & therefore our history.

The NRL should honour the premierships.

The players association should threaten a strike over it because it’s essentially stolen valour.

One example you think about Johnny Raper and what he did for you, for the game, for the thousands of people he helped for charity and to know that he left us without his due, it’s just plain wrong.
