Dragons statement: Player breach

Ive really had enough of this whole exercise. The players knew they did wrong and we were told that they were going to apologise and move on with it. There were lies told and they really did disgrace our proud St George name (which i find unforgiveable). I'm really suprised DeBelin actually survived this chance. With a chance to redeem themselves suddenly now 2 of them have decided theyre not going to sign. I really think that the Club should say sign right now or else you dont play again this season and you're not going to get paid-if you dont like it, take us to court. On the DeBelin time scale it would make court about late 2023 . I have to say at the next home game i can get to attend ( if it happens this year) I for one are going to give my team a gobfull when they run out to warmup. I'm so sick of players ruining our once proud name and then thinking they have any rights left. This year has been a train wreck for our reputation and now were treated equal to Cronulla and the rest of the wannabes who've had their image tarnished by stupid player behaviour. Personally i wouldnt care if they sacked the 12 players involved.I'd rather lose games with a new bunch of players who want to play for St George, then to see us in the press like this as a laughing stock, and could have been responsible for shutting down the entire comp. Ive been a supporter for over 60 yrs now and ive never felt this badly about our players before in my life. I thought we had a chance this year but this has ruined it for me. 4 players missing each of our 3 games-and maybe 2 more for 3 games. When i get near them they'll know my anger

Would love some clarity on precisely what the players have been asked to sign.

We need all our troops over the next 4 weeks if we are to limp into the finals.

I doubt there's much more than what's been reported. Basically the players have to declare that no one else was at the party other than people already in the bubble.

There could be a number of reasons why a lawyer would advise against signing such a statement. Doesn't necessarily mean they are trying to hide anything by not signing, it could mean they simply don't want to be liable for any gate crashers.

Other players might be less concerned and will sign away, but surely this comes down to an individual's choice. You can't force someone to sign a document and I question the action being taken against them for not signing.

Dragons duo Zac Lomax and Daniel Alvaro will reportedly be left behind when their teammates travel to Queensland on Wednesday and could miss up to a month of footy.

Can understand plenty of the comments about these two players protecting themselves legally but the bottom line is, if nobody from outside the bubble was present, and 10 others have signed it, why are they not? It looks as though they're hiding something and if others were there, they should of fronted up and told of it right from the start.
Otherwise, yeh, they're at fault anyhow in a massive way if someone is/was unlikely enough to catch it. Hate the way this is dragging on and on.

Well Said..
Dont beleive for one minute that our precious playing group and staff don't read the threads on this forum on a daily basis....( those that can actually read ) ....Hope Hook gets hold of this and reads it out in the sheds prior to the manly game.Nothing else needs to be said.....

Yet no requirement for a statement to be signed by the Qld SOO ?

we are being scapegoated by the NRL again. Easy targets at the moment but our players lead us into this position

A very good example of the system not being foolproof .

Certainly not as secure as the NRL would like it , but hey if the Queenslanders can invite some female companionship into their hotel to play ‘ put the tail on the donkey ‘ then what do they expect ?

Could it be about things like, how they got home? Rather than who was at the BBQ? What position is taken in regards to police entering the premises, are they considered from outside the bubble? Are they a potential contamination source?
Maybe there is a number of things the lawyers are concerned about

Josh McGuire and the ‘Dirty dozen’ Dragons didn’t think they would be caught

Josh McGuire has given his account of the now infamous Paul Vaughan gathering revealing what happened when the police crashed the party.

Michael Carayannis

Josh McGuire has conceded the Dragons dirty dozen thought they would ‘get away with’ the now infamous BBQ which has severely damaged the club and resulted in Paul Vaughan’s sacking.
A candid McGuire put his hand up and said he and his St George Illawarra teammates knew they were doing the wrong thing when they got together at Vaughan’s house as they flouted the NSW health regulations.
But McGuire did not shy away from the error.

“In hindsight no-one knew the magnitude of the situation owe got ourselves into,” McGuire said. “It‘s a massive ordeal that’s gone on. We warrant every bit of the repercussions. We can’t sit here and cry foul. We put ourselves into the situation. We didn’t think it would escalate to this magnitude.
“We can’t sit here and say we didn’t understand. We were in Shellharbour, a long way away from everything that was happening. We thought it wasn’t going to be a drama, we wouldn’t get caught.”

McGuire and his nine teammates rejoined the Dragons squad on Monday. He defended the two teammates – Zac Lomax and Daniel Alvaro – who were yet to sign the declaration which would allow the pair to return to the bubble. He added those who were invited to the BBQ lived nearby Vaughan.
“Everyone has their own legal advice,” McGuire said. “They are entitled to their opinion.
“(It is my understanding) they were under the impression if someone contracted Covid-19 and something happened over the next week, whether it was our fault or someone’s fault they will be found liable. They weren’t willing to take that risk.”

The group were read the ‘Riot Act’ by coach Anthony Griffin when they returned with the rest of the group on Monday. McGuire conceded some players panicked when police arrived at Vaughan’s house which prompted some to hide and others to flee.
“I stood there,” McGuire said. “Some of the boys were scared. A few of us stood there and talked to police. A few boys didn’t want to hang around. A few of the boys just stayed where they were and a few of the guys came out and saw the police.
“It was a poor decision by us. It’s hard. We’re still quite upset and disappointed. I’m shattered I brought this club into this situation.
McGuire said he was unclear if his one-game ban would be served against the Sea Eagles on Friday night.
Teammate Blake Lawrie also fronted up to explain his actions but was a little more circumspect about the events at Vaughan’s house.

“It was a get together with a couple of the boys who made a decision,” Lawrie said. “We didn’t think the repercussions were going to be this big. We are truly sorry what has happened to our wider community, club and teammates.
“I thought it was harmless. We were in our own bubble. We can’t do anything about what we’ve done. I can’t wait to prove to our teammates mainly that we are sorry.
“(We have to prove) we’re not disjointed.”
Lawrie also said he was “shattered” for Vaughan who had his contract ripped up last week.
“I’m worried about his mental health and wellbeing,” Lawrie said. “He will get another deal elsewhere.”
Veteran outside back Gerard Beale also wrote on Instagram on Monday that he ‘should have respected the rules

The stat dec's are all about the NRL's exposure to litigation.

Adbo has stated that the NRL has been granted exemptions from various State govs.

The undertakings by the players are part and parcel of NRL hq covering all bases should an outbreak be traced back to the night itself.

Being legally binding, I would imagine the 2 players in question have been advised unless they are 100% confident in their answers, not to sign.

I'm not going to bag the guys out at all. There's enough out there doing that at the moment. Poor decision by some of them and now they're copping it from everyone. I don't believe there was any intentional malice in it at all and believe them when they say they didn't think the repercussions were going to be this big. I've done some serious dumb sh,,it in my time and things I've regretted. They're still my team and I'll support them no matter what. Rant over.

Thanks, as usual @George Dragon
Some good insight there from Josh.
Explaining the signing of the document you can understand some players not being comfortable with having the prospect of being held accountable for any further outbreaks. They've already been dealt with by the Law & NRL so why should they have not be able to move on.
The comment from Lawrie was interesting.

Exactly this.
The QLD SOO players, coaches, staff and everyone else there, should have to sign Stat Decs if the NRL was legit.
After all, the person at the camp was fom "Outside of the bubble".

From the article...

St George Illawarra Dragons players pictured at WIN Stadium in Wollongong for one of their last training sessions before relocating to the Gold Coast.

That suggests we'll be playing at Robina (Cbus) on the Gold Coast.

What really gets to me is that idiot Hooper just will not let go of this , the fool was not satisfied with Dragon’s boss Ryan Webb’s answer to ‘ his ‘ question. Just who in the hell does this walking dick think he is ?

He asked the club’s CEO what was behind the reason that Lomax and Avalon decision not to sign the covid document and walked away disappointed that it was not the one he wanted .

So therefore there must be more to this - they are hiding information from their club , the NRL , the community itself and of course God almighty himself James ‘ loopy ‘ Hooper .

The truth is that their solicitor advised them that they may need to protect themselves from any future penalties under the Covid Act .

That at least is what was explained to Hooper by Webb himself , not that he needed to , but did so as a courtesy and also to reduce any further concern .

Im worried about Lomax as I think he could be going towards the exit w this whole not signing his stat dec...he's been segregated from the squad now looks like for another 4 weeks and i really think its that dramatic.. the problem being that if NRL starts digging to see if any other people were present and were well that puts Lomax and Alvaro in a whole lot of situation w their team mates as they basically found them out falsifying a stat dec....if it happens quickly enough and he does ask for a release we could go for Gagai at least..better option IMO anyhow drama aplenty afoot. https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/07/12/dragons-duo-set-to-stay-outside-relocated-team-bubble/
