Let's face it, the news about a 4.15 pm kick-off on Sundays is confirmation that the actual people who physically go to the game are the lowest priority in the thinking of our sport's administration. If you have to rely on public transport to get to and from games, and your team winds up with one of these games, you now face a longer trip home as many public transport roster start curtailing services after 6pm on Sundays, thus making it even more inconvenient to travel.

Makes you wonder why you should even bother going when you are treated like crap.

Don't think 4pm ko matters to most people like me who never go to games, it's always been a 4.35 headstart, 35m to turn 5m ad breaks into 10 seconds . . . the sometimes Fox replay will suffer however

unless people from QLD & NSW want to watch it in HD ( VIC get them all on GEM don't they ? )

no. its because the NRL had to give power to Nein for the $1.25 billion deal and removal of first and last rights clause in the contract. everyone loves hating on management but theyre actually doing alright in the last year or two.

Yeah, and how popular is Channel 9 again with the average football fan again? NRL management want people to go to games. I can assure you 4.15 pm kick-offs on Sunday's in the middle of winter won't help.

Ok, Todd heres a free one for ya...

If you are going to make us sit around on a nice hot warm day till basically twilight, for kick off, can you at least make sure the sunday 4.18pm game, is organised so its always a 3 game day, including holden cup, premier league etc, and make sure the gap is narrowed between 2nd and 3rd game...

that way you will get a lot less backlash... youre welcome

We've begged for the Sunday FTA game to be live for so long and now we're complaining about it...

Yes, but why should it be at the expense of those who actually go to the game? That is the problem. People who go to the games want to watch the game during daylight hours, yet due to the TV networks more and more games are either at night or in twilight hours. Only people who want that are the TV networks. I don't have a problem with live TV coverage of the game, but why should the people who actually pay their money to go be the ones inconvenienced?

Because of a billion dollars.

Have it at 2pm if you like. TV stations will pay $600 million next contract.

So the fans who go to the games should be the one treated like serfs huh for people who sit on their couches at home and pay $0 to watch huh? That will do me.

The AFL have been able to keep their traditional timeslots without completely kowtowing to the TV dollar. Doesn't seem to effect how much they get for their TV rights. Seems like too many league fans have swallowed the Channel 9 spin.

Because 9 paid to broadcast a game at 4pm on a Sunday and Fox paid to broadcast a game exclusively live at 2pm. So you have have two options:
1. Have an earlier kickoff but have it broadcast on delay at 4pm
2. Have a kickoff at 4pm (or slightly later) and have it broadcast live

Yes, but I'll bet Channel 9 did not pay to televise their Sunday game live now did they? If that is correct, then it is a variation of their contract. As such why do such variations only ever seem to be one way?

If you want to grow crowds who attend games you have to schedule them at times people prefer. Otherwise if you give in to every demand and whim from the television station you may as well give up and publicly admit the paying public are secondary to everyone else. The TV networks don't care about anything other than ratings. The NRL should care about more than that.

I'd hardly call "us fans getting live footy" one way, particularly when it will be at the expense of ad slots. Sure they should rightly expect that the ratings will increase, though I'm not sure how the media experts view less ads to a higher audience, v's more ads to a lower audience.

I assume they are branded the "National" Rugby League as they are wanting to take the product nationally?

Given people in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth etc can't get down to the SFS on a Sunday afternoon I guess they are trying to cater for them?

Look I get where you are coming from, but at the end of the day, the game at some point has to move out of serving the needs of the minority.

I would love to be able to get to a game every weekend, but being in Brisbane that isn't possible. If I wanted to watch a game up here (which I don't as I'd rather set my cash on fire than give it to the Bronco's) I would not care at all if the game kicked off at 4:15 in the afternoon. Personal opinion of course.

And the AFL have changed schedules to suit TV. They play Thursday night games and as far as I am aware, that never went on in years gone by?

They have had Thursday and Monday night games, Twilight Saturday and Sunday games, Late Sunday games etc.

So I don't think its true to say the AFL have kept their traditional timeslots at all.

Also keep in mind that with SA and WA teams, "traditional" afternoon slots in those states = the eastern states get prime time games, so there is less need to switch around games anyway.

But you are right, anyone that says that the AFL doesn't/hasn't moved games to satisfy the TV broadcaster is kidding themselves.

Yes they certainly got rid of that pesky 2.00 pm time slot on Saturday didn't they and moved to a night time Grand Final

Further those talking about going to the SFS, did I say going to the SFS? Nope, I said to people going to those games. I never mentioned venues at all. Public transport has one commonality and that is the scarcity of it on Sunday evenings. I've been to enough NRL games at different venues across Australia to have some idea of what I am talking about.

You are looking at it solely through getting the game on TV and not at getting people to turn up to games. I have no problems with it being televised.

My problem is with the kick-off being moved to 4.15 pm to do so due to the effect it will have on those who may want to go to the game. That is why I don't like it and that is my right. If you can't get that thru your head then that is your problem and not mine.

Simple fact is, the game is worth more to the networks than it is to the punters.
